Frederiksen, Department of Germanic Studies Arabian nights, oriental women, the harem, exoticism, and eroticism: what else comes to mind when thinking of the colorful world of the Orient? In order to challenge these Western stereotypes, which have been abundant since the Middle Ages and reflect only a few of the many prejudices contained in the Western understanding of “Orientalism”1, my study examines cultural representations of oriental, African and occidental women in literary texts by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German and Austrian writers (Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Ida Hahn-Hahn, Peter Altenberg, Else Lasker-Schüler) as well as in the visual arts. Stereotypical images of oriental women are 1 “Orientalism”, a term used by Edward Said in his book Orientalism (1978) to describe a Western tradition which has been influenced by 18th and 19th Century European imperialism in both academia and the arts, represents a Western view which is full of prejudices towards the East. According to Said, Orientalism is a product of empire and the belief by the Western world of outclassing Eastern cultures in power and knowledge. Said claims that “at no time in German scholarship during the first two-thirds of the nineteenth century could a close partnership have developed between Orientalists and a protracted, sustained national interest in the Orient. […] What German Oriental scholarship did was to refine and elaborate techniques whose application was to texts, myths, ideas, and languages almost literally gathered from the Orient by imperial Britain and France.” (Orientalism, 1979. pp. 17, 19). based on assumptions and claims made by eighteenth-century Western philosophers and travellers (e.g. Kant, Herder, Forster), creating misinterpretations of the Orient which appeared to be the perfect place to act out “male” fantasies. While using cultural studies approaches including oriental, post-colonial, and gender studies, this dissertation establishes a new theoretical framework on Gender and Orientalism, and aims to contribute significantly to a new understanding of the Orientalism debate within the German and European contexts. An in-depth discussion of the “harem” as cultural text and multifaceted metaphor discloses this realm as a space for cross-cultural female encounter where hybrid identity formations of culturally diverse women arise.     PLAYING CARDS The first session of this sale is comprised in large part of the playing card and ephemera collection of Bob and Rhonda Hawes, of Hamden, Conn. The couple met in 1976, married two years later, and have jointly pursued their shared love of cards and card games ever since. Their introduction to collecting came in the early 1980s through Robert Kissel, a bridge- playing friend and student at Yale studying old European card games. Robert taught them gameplay of Tarock and Skat, and in 1986 encouraged the Haweses to attend their first playing card conference, held in nearby New Haven by the International Playing Card Society. Reluctantly, the Haweses agreed to go. The rest, so they say, is history. At the IPCS conference the Haweses met Gene Hochman, an authority on early American playing cards and author of The Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards. Through conversations with him, they were inspired to form a private collection and dedicated themselves to ferreting out 1 top material along the flea market and antique show circuits. They collected widely in books, advertising, postcards, trade cards, stamps, bridge tallies, and more, but eventually narrowed their focus to more specialized areas, most notably non-standard artistic decks, and particularly transformation decks. After more than two decades of active collecting, and following retirement from their previous careers, the couple decided to auction the material as they prepare for the next phase in life, including travel, new hobbies, and volunteer work. Of course, this phase will go on to include attendance at several annual playing card conferences, regular get- togethers with the many friends they’ve made along the way – and lots of games of cards.

    SEVEN CENTURIES OF HISTORY The Collections of the d’Este Library THE LIBRARY PERMANENT EXHIBITION FOREWORD by Luca Bellingeri Director of the d’Este Library In year 1924 the famous illuminated manuscript of the Borso d’Este’s Bible returned to the Library after 65 years of “exile” in Vienna, where it had been brought in 1859 among the belongings of the last Duke of Modena, the fugitive Francesco V of Austria-Este. Consequently Domenico Fava, the Library Director, decided to open a Permanent Exhibition in a hall of the Library in order to allow the view of the Borso’s Bible, the “most beautiful Italian illuminated book ”, not only to scholars, but also to ordinary people. Hence, from its beginning this display was aimed to the artistic and cultural promotion of ordinary people more than to the technical interest and study of specialists and scholars. The Exhibition Hall opened to the public on 19-04-1925. The Borso’s Bible could be admired within a proper context of several magnificent masterpieces, selected among many others from the rich collections of ancient books preserved on the Library shelves. The 450 items on display had been divided in 5 sections: Illuminated Manuscripts , Illuminated Printed Books , Printed Books with Engravings either by a wood or by a copper moulding, Ancient Bindings and an Appendix about the beginnings of the printing techniques in both Modena and in the whole d’Este Duchy. The exhibition was mainly based on the antiques of the great illuminated codex from Humanism and Renaissance and the best printed editions from the XV and XVI Centuries.
