Dozens of people, including children, were killed in the regime’s assault. “In the face of this act of unimaginable barbarity, the civilized world could not remain indifferent,” Duda said in a statement. “Poland strongly condemns crimes committed against ci- vilians and calls on the entire international community to engage even more strongly in the restoration of peace in Syria, to stop the madness of war and interrupt the spiral of violence.” POLAND HAS REJECTED SUGGESTIONS that it may be punished politically and financially by the European Union for not accepting refugee/migrants. After hordes of migrants poured into Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had initially welcomed them, prevailed upon the EU to force other countries to admit specific quotas.

qr. 3. 2018 no. 6 ISSN 2543-9839 EVENTS www.warsawinstitute.org Editorial Dear Readers, special geopolitical relationship is coming to an end before our very eyes: an old union, now almost 70 years old; an unusual relationship, because it is one between the defeated and the winner; Aa union that has brought many benefits, and not only to both these sides. This is how Grzegorz Kuczyński, an expert from The Warsaw Institute Foundation, diagnoses the geopolitical situation by looking at the current relations between between the United States and Germany. It is indeed hard to shake off the impression that this relationship is crucial for the current distribution of power, not only for Europe but for the entire world including Central Europe. Experts point out that the crisis in the European Union is multifaceted and that indeed we are witnessing the simultaneous occurrence of many crises: the crisis in the eurozone, the crisis in the context of pursuing a common foreign and security policy, the migration crisis, Brexit, and the growing threat and occurences of terrorist attacks. These trends have consequences for all members of the European community and increasingly call into question the effectiveness of EU leadership. EU countries with less economic potential, on the other hand, have little chance of resisting the pressure of European bureaucracy, which only increases a lack of trust towards EU institutions. In this issue of the Western Report, we examine the situation in Europe in its various aspects, focusing largely on geopolitics, demographics, and economics. 3/2018 3 Editorial I can refer here to an article by Tomasz Grzegorz Grosse who analyzed geopolitical changes in the EU, drawing attention to The their political, social, and economic dimensions.

Book Reviews 209 Ola Hnatiuk. Odwaga i strach [Courage and Fear]. 2nd ed., Wydawnictwo KEW, 2016. 720 pp. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. PLN 39.00, paper. he list of scholarly works dealing with the history of Lviv is impressively T long. Even the period of World War II, which had been neglected for some time, is now fairly well analyzed and described. However, most of these works are based on an ethnocentric interpretation of the past. While the individuals in these books and articles are introduced primarily as Poles, Ukrainians, or Jews, their narratives are frequently homogenized. And their motivations are usually explained as deeply rooted in their national identities, which leads to representations that often contain stereotypes. Ola Hnatiuk, in examining the history of Lviv’s intelligentsia during and after World War II, abandoned traditional methods and chose a different approach. A brief look at the author’s biography shows several reasons for this academic change of pace. Hnatiuk, as a professor at the University of Warsaw and a researcher at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, published numerous scholarly works devoted to Ukrainian identity and culture. She also translated several literary and scholarly books from Ukrainian into Polish. Between 2006 and 2010, she served as a counsellor at the Polish Embassy in Kyiv. Her contribution to Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation was recognized by Polish cultural foundations and the Polish authorities. The latter decorated her with the prestigious Order of Polonia Restituta (Commander’s Cross). However, it was not only Hnatiuk’s professional experience that led her to cross national boundaries.
