Quarter Question Recent Regular Reign Remember Quarter Question Recent Monday - Spelling These are the statutory words that you need to practise this week: quarter question When you are practising, do what we would do in class: recent regular Read the words Identify the tricky part reign remember Practise in different ways e.g. rainbow writing, capital letters, pyramid words. Task 2: Handwriting We know that you have been working really hard to complete the work every week since you’ve been away from school, and we’ve heard from some of you that your presentation and handwriting is really improving. Mr Trzcinski & Mrs Slater would love to see how your handwriting is coming on, so this week we’d like you to copy out these sentences in your best joined up writing. Start each letter on the line. Get those ascenders to the right height. Make sure descenders go below the line. Use run-ins and run-outs. Make sure capital letters fill the line space. 1. A quarter is half of a half. 2. Ask lots of questions every day. 3. We played outside during the recent good weather. 4. I have a regular play date with my best friends. 5. The reign of King Henry VIII was 36 years. 6. I work hard every week to remember my times tables. Ask your parents if they can take a photo of your handwriting and send it to us at : [email protected] We can’t wait to see it. Treasure Island recap In the most recent part of the story, we found out that the pirates were working for Long John Silver and searching for the treasure on the island. Jim sneaks onto the island with the pirates, but then runs away from them. He sees Silver kill some of the sailors who don’t go along with his plan and realises he is in big trouble. As he wanders the island, Jim meets a man named Ben Gunn who has been marooned there for three years. It turns out that Ben Gunn knows Long John Silver and sailed with him, Captain Flint and his crew when they buried the treasure on the island originally. At the same time, the Doctor, Squire and Captain try to escape the ship and set up a base at a stockade on the island. As they are doing so, some of the pirates on the ship spot them and fire the cannon at them, while pirates on the beach run after them. You can watch the video recap here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/english-ks2-treasure-island-pt5/z77tcqt Tuesday - Treasure Island… In Chapter 14 & 15, the ‘good’ crew get to the stockade and have a pistol fight with the pirates. One of the pirates and one of the good crew get shot and killed. Jim runs to the stockade and joins them, but Ben Gunn runs away. Long John Silver approaches the stockade to make a truce with Jim and his friends, offering to take them back safely on the boat in exchange for the treasure map. Captain Smollett and the rest refuse to deal with Silver and he leaves, saying his pirates will kill them all within an hour. In Chapter 16, the pirates attack the stockade. Jim and his friends manage to fight them off, killing five pirates while they lost just two of their crew. Unfortunately though, two others are injured, including the Captain. On the school website (in the Year 3 home learning section) you will see a new video of me reading this exciting chapter from the story. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/english-ks2-treasure-island-pt6/zv346v4 In Chapter 17 & 18, Jim leaves the stockade and his friends to find a small boat that Ben Gunn told him about. He uses it to sail out to the main ship (The Hispaniola) and cuts the anchor free, hoping the ship will end up on the beach. He then climbs aboard the ship to see what he can do. Tuesday - Inference Read this extract from Chapter 19 and then have a go at the tasks. Key Vocabulary: despair: without hope dastardly: cruel to and fro: backwards and forwards stock still: completely still, not moving I crawled onto the deck and I froze as my eyes took in a sight of disaster and despair. Mud was caked everywhere and a broken bottle rolled about, to and fro. Two men lay in a heap on the deck. One, the dastardly Israel Hands, moved slightly giving me goose bumps all over. Sweat dripped down my face as I looked over to the other man, who was stock still on his back and clearly dead. I trembled as I approached them, when Israel suddenly began moaning and I saw with wide eyes that he was wounded, sick and bleeding. Task 1: What are Jim’s thoughts and feelings as he sees what has happened on the ship? Thoughts Feelings Task 2: Find and copy any words and phrases that tell you Jim is feeling scared / fearful. Go Deeper: Imagine you are the author of Treasure Island. How else could you write that Jim might behave to show he is scared / fearful. Think about what he might do, or what his body language might be like if he was afraid. Wednesday - Inference Read the extract from the end of Chapter 19 then answer the questions. “You’ll call me Captain from now on,” I told Israel Hands as I took charge of the ship, “and I’ll drop that flag as well.” He looked at me sourly, but said nothing as I scampered up and cut down the Jolly Roger. As we were the only two aboard and it needed us both to control the ship, I warily struck a deal with Hands to sail the ship back to shore, but as we got on our way I saw his wounded look turn to a crafty sneer and he began to watch me closely. A little later we stopped for something to eat and Hands asked me to get his glass from belowdecks. It was clear to me that he was up to something however I thought I could outsmart him, so tentatively agreed. I ran belowdecks, then quickly sneaked round to a place where I could see what Hands was doing without him seeing me. I was right. I spied him crawling across the deck and pulling out a knife from behind the mast. Then he wiped off the blood and tucked it into his sleeve. I knew he needed me to steer the ship ashore, but once we were back near the island he would come for me. Paragraph 1 1. Why does Jim tell Israel Hands to call him Captain? 2. Hands looks at Jim but says nothing. Which word tells you how Hands is feeling about it? What does it mean? 3. Does Jim climb up slowly or quickly to cut down the Jolly Roger? How do you know? Paragraph 2 4. Does Jim trust Hands? Which word tells you? 5. What does Hands do as they begin to sail the ship? Paragraph 3 6. Why does Jim agree to go below decks? 7. Find and copy the word that means ‘cautiously’. Paragraph 4 8. How might Jim be feeling after he sees Hands gets the knife? Thursday - summarising Summarising is when we give a short statement of the key ideas of something. We can summarise a text by answering three key questions: Who: Who is doing the main action? (usually 1 or 2 characters) What: What is the main thing that happens? Where: Where does the action happen? Task 1: For each extract, summarise the three key points. Be specific e.g. Where - don’t just say ‘the ship’, if you can say which part of the ship 1. As we neared the shore, I was so caught up in the work I was doing that it wasn’t until the last moment that I sensed Hands behind me. I wheeled about and saw him lunge at me. I dodged and ran away, grabbing one of the guns from my belt. I pulled the trigger but it didn’t work. The seawater had made it useless. 2. Suddenly the ship struck the beach and we were both jolted up into the air. I scrambled to the top of the mast and made my guns ready as Hands climbed up towards me, sneering and gripping a knife between his teeth. Hands got to the top of the rigging and started towards me. 3. “One more step and I’ll blow your brains out,” I shouted. He stopped. I could see his mind working and he took the dagger from his mouth to speak. “I would’ve had you if not for that bump,” he growled “but I don’t get no luck!” He reached his knife and let loose right at me, pinning my shoulder to the mast. I 4. cried out in pain and, firing both pistols in shock, dropped them into the ocean.

American universities in connection with local authorities were the first to fund and support such research programs on the east coast of the United States and the Caribbean. The study of the shipwreck of the pirate Edward Teach (Blackbeard), the Queen Anne's Revenge 1718, is a very good example of this success. However, a work of crossing archaeological data deserves to be carried out for all the sites brought to light, in particular in the Caribbean area, on the North American coast, without forgetting the Indian Ocean. The synthetic work of Charles R. Ewen and Russell K. Skowronek published in 2006 and 2016 by the University of Florida is an important first step. They treat shipwrecks as well as land occupations, and go back for a long time on the percceived ideas related to the true image of Pirates. However, there is a lack of material culture studies from these sites probably related to the lack of scientific publications of these objects.

However, it is the novel’s afterlife on film that has generated fictional pirates as we now understand them. By tracing the transformation of the author’s pirate captain, Long John Silver, from N. C. Wyeth’s illustrations (1911) through the cinematic performances of Wallace Beery (1934) and Robert Newton (1950), this paper demonstrates that the films have created a quintessentially “American pirate”—a figure that has necessarily evolved in response to differences in medium, the performances of the leading actors, and filmgoers’ expectations. Comparing depictions of Silver’s dress, physique, and speech patterns, his role vis-à-vis Jim Hawkins, each adaptation’s narrative point of view, and Silver’s departure at the end of the films reveals that while the Silver of the silver screen may appear to represent a significant departure from the text, he embodies a nuanced reworking of and testament to the author’s original. The play begins with Jim and Ben simultaneously telling their stories. Although their stories begin ten years apart, they were both deceived as young boys by the same scurvy pirate, Long John Silver. Year: 1871 Ben Gunn needs work after being abandoned by his father. He hears about a potential job working on Captain Flint’s pirate ship. Ben is dismayed when turned down by Flint, but soon meets Long John Silver who brings Ben on board Flint’s boat as the cabin boy. Year: 1881 Jim Hawkins and his friends are playing pirates when they are approached by an actual pirate, Billy Bones! Billy, protecting a chest he’s brought with him, tells the kids about Captain Flint’s lost treasure, the fifteen pirates who died burying it, and the pirate they need to beware of: the man with one-leg. When Jim’s mother approaches them, Billy asks for a room in the Hawkins’ inn. As she prepares his room, Billy warns Jim to look out for the one-legged man. That night, Jim has nightmares about a giant one-legged man. Year: 1871 Ben Gunn and Long John Silver sit together on the ship, looking at the stars. Long John tells Ben about the importance of constellations and the story of how proud Orion defeated every dangerous creature the gods sent his way until the gods sent a scorpion that killed Orion.
