September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day – Drill September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day – Drill “This is a Drill” Type of Event: Civil Disturbance: Invasion of pirates ---Blackbeard (and his crew – Black Ceaser, Israel Hands, Lieutenant Richards), Zheng Yi Sao, Jean Lafitte, Micajah and Wiley Harpe Pirates Duration of exercise: Wednesday, Sept 19 from 0000 to2400 (12:00am to 11:59pm) You may participate any time after that if you wish Place of occurrence: The Southeast Texas Region Objective: The goal of a drill is to request resources through WebEOC following your processes to fight against the Pirates and push them back into the sea so they never return. Participants: Sentinels and their users District Coordinators TDEM Critical Information Systems (CIS) SOC Methodology: WebEOC Event and STAR board Active Incident Name: Exercise 09/19/2018 International Talk Like Pirate Drill Exercise Directors: Black Dollie Winn (Janette Walker) , 832-690-8765 Thiefin’ Jackie Sneed (Jennifer Suter) Emergency Scenario: The above pirate have risen from their grave and traveled to the Gulf Coast during Tuesday night (9/18) and have already invaded the coastal counties (Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Chambers) and are working their way to the most northern counties (Walker, Colorado, Austin, Sabine). Each county they invade, they commandeer the liquor and supply chain stores as well as EOCs. Inject: AVAST Ye!! Ye land lovers, we gentleman o' fortunes be havin' risen from Davy Jones` Locker an' be are invadin' yer area an' plan t' commandeer all yer resources an' government land. We be tired o' th' water an' be movin' inland. You land lovers, we pirates have risen from Davy Jones' Locker and are invading your area and plan to commandeer all your resources and government land. We are tired of the water and are moving inland. We have already invaded the coastal counties and are moving up to the northern counties. Question to Consider: If you were to push us out to sea, what tool would you use to go about requesting resources and working together to share information? Use this tool to request the resources you need to fight this invasion. HISTORY OF PIRATES Name Life Years Country of Comments Active Origin Black Caesar d. 1718 1700s– Africa A captured slave turned pirate, Black Caesar 1718 was a well-known pirate active off the Florida Keys during the early 18th century. He later acted as a lieutenant to Blackbeard and was one of five Africans serving on his flagship.[26] Israel Hands ? 1700s– Colonial Also known as Basilica Hands.[31] He is best 1718 America known for being second in command to Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Hands' first historical mention was in 1718, when Blackbeard gave him command of David Herriot's ship Adventure after Herriot was captured by Teach in March 1718.[29] 2 of 4 September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day – Drill “This is a Drill” Blackbeard (Edward Teach) 1680– 1716– England With his fearsome appearance, Blackbeard is 1718 1718 often credited with the creation of the stereotypical image of a pirate. Although his real name remains unknown, he began his pirate career as the first officer of Buccaneer-turned-pirate Captain Benjamin Hornigold of the Mary Anne. When a young crewman, Samuel Bellamy, called for a vote of no confidence in Hornigold for his refusal to attack English ships, the crew by a vote ousted Hornigold and Blackbeard, leaving the Mary Anne to Bellamy whom the crew elected their new captain.[23][26] His legend solidified after he took command of the Queen Anne's Revenge.[29] Lieutenant Richards (pirate) ? 1718 Unknown Active in the Caribbean and off the Carolinas. He is best known for sailing alongside Blackbeard (Edward Teach / Thatch). Jean Lafitte c. 1803– France French pirate (or privateer) active in the Gulf 1776– 1815 of Mexico during the early 1800s. A wanted 1826? 1817– fugitive by the United States, he later 1820s participated, during the War of 1812, in the Battle of New Orleans on the side of Andrew Jackson and the Americans. In 1822, Lafitte approached the navy of Gran Colombia and Simon Bolivar granted a commission and given a new ship, a 40-ton schooner named General Santander. 3 of 4 September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day – Drill “This is a Drill” Far from being a “lady”, the ruthless Zheng Yi Sao 1801- Chinese efficiency, and utter conviction of Zheng Yi 1844 Sao made her one of the most feared, and successful and terrifying pirates of her day. Known for her intelligence, cunning, and a general love of punitive decapitation, she enjoy huge power and influence. Not surprising, since she ruled the largest fleet amongst her contemporaries. The Red Flag Fleet was 1500 ships strong and faced down the Chinese, Portuguese, and British navies successfully. She was so good at her job, in fact, that she was able to retire with all her plunder, and a pension, at the age of 35. A terrifying pirate but one of the few to die an old women and protect her wealth. Micajah and Wiley Harpe Before 1775?– United America's first known serial killers, 1768– 1799 States were Loyalists in the American Revolution, 1799 (Micaja as well as, river pirates and highwaymen, (Micaja h) who preyed on travelers along the Ohio h) 1775?– River and the waterways Before 1804 of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. In this committee, we will be looking at the Golden Age of Piracy, a period of history that has captured the imaginations of writers and filmmakers for decades. People have long been enthralled by the swashbuckling tales of pirates, their fame multiplied by famous books and movies such as Treasure Island, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Peter Pan. But more often than not, these portrayals have been misrepresentations, leading to a multitude of inaccuracies regarding pirates and their lifestyle. This committee seeks to change this. In the late 1710s, nearly all pirates in the Caribbean operated out of the town of Nassau, on the Bahamian island of New Providence. From there, they ravaged shipping lanes and terrorized the Caribbean’s law-abiding citizens, striking fear even into the hearts of the world’s most powerful empires. Eventually, the British had enough, and sent a man to rectify the situation — Woodes Rogers. In just a short while, Rogers was able to oust most of the pirates from Nassau, converting it back into a lawful British colony.

    violence and predation robert j. antony Violence and Predation on the Sino-Vietnamese Maritime Frontier, 1450–1850 iolence and predation, mainly in the form of piracy, were two of V the most persistent and pervasive features of the Sino-Vietnamese maritime frontier between the mid-fifteenth and mid-nineteenth cen- turies.1 In the Gulf of Tonkin, which is the focus of this article, piracy was, in fact, an intrinsic feature of this sea frontier and a dynamic and significant force in the region’s economic, social, and cultural devel- opment. My approach, what scholars call history from the bottom up, places pirates, not the state, at center stage, recognizing their impor- tance and agency as historical actors. My research is based on various types of written history, including Qing archives, the Veritable Records of Vietnam and China, local Chinese gazetteers, and travel accounts; I also bring in my own fieldwork in the gulf region conducted over the past six years. The article is divided into three sections: first, I discuss the geopolitical characteristics of this maritime frontier as a background to our understanding of piracy in the region; second, I consider the socio-cultural aspects of the gulf region, especially the underclass who engaged in clandestine activities as a part of their daily lives; and third, I analyze five specific episodes of piracy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin (often referred to here simply as the gulf), which is tucked away in the northwestern corner of the South China Sea, borders on Vietnam in the west and China in the north and east.
