Pirate Adventures July 12-16, 2021 1:00-4:30 PM, $49 per day Make it a full day for $98 by adding a morning camp! Arrr-matey! It’s out to sea we go! Attention all scalliwags and explorers: Are your kids interested in sailing the seven seas, swinging on a rope, dropping into the sea, and building their own pirate ship? The life of a pirate is not for the couch-potato - get up and be active this summer at Airborne! Every day is a new adventure, and a new pirate joke of course! Monday: What does it take to be a Pirate? Campers will pick out their very own pirate name, and add their name to the crew list. Now that the campers are official Pirates, it’s time for them to explore some of the physical tasks pirates have to do. Using the different equipment like the ropes, trampoline, bars, ladders and balance beams we will learn how to climb, jump, swing and balance (for sword fighting) like a pirate. Each camper will get a turn to complete the Pirate Agility Obstacle Course, that includes each of these tasks, to earn gold coins. Tuesday: Battle at Sea! Pirates face so many challenges… can you get around with only one leg? Can you walk the plank without falling in? Can you defend your ship and sink the other ships in return? Can you earn your golden treasure? Come and sail the friendly seas, if you dare! Arrr! Wednesday: Building a Pirate Ship! Campers will learn about all the different parts of a pirate ship and then work as a crew and build their very own ship. -

School Radio Treasure Island 3. Long John Silver and the Hispaniola Narrator: Three weeks after Jim Hawkins escapes the pirate gang with Billy Bones’ treasure map, he arrives in Bristol on a hot Sunday morning. What a city. The gateway to the Oceans of the World. Tea, sugar, cotton, coffee, slaves - aye, slaves - fill the streets and the docks. The great masts of a dozen fleets tower over the quays. Sailors, travellers, the rich and the poor throng the busy streets all of them hungry for money or food - or adventure. Jim has a note - he must find a Mr Silver who will show him to the Squire’s ship. Jim finds him all right down on the quayside - and there’s a shock, for as he comes up behind the man, he sees he has only one leg. Could this be the pirate, so feared by Billy Bones? Jim: Mister... Silver... sir? Long John Silver: Silver? Long John Silver you be intending to say, I’m sure, and who may you be? Narrator: Jim stares up. Tall and strong, with a face as big as a ham, intelligent and smiling, Long John Silver winks down at him. Jim relaxes - this man’s no pirate. Jim: Jim Hawkins, sir. Cabin boy to the new ship. Long John Silver: Is that so? Jim: Squire Trelawney’s ship. Sir. Long John Silver: Well, pleased I am to see you my boy. I’m ship’s cook - and now you’re come, we must go aboard. Hop in now. Narrator: With a graceful turn and a jump, Silver’s down into a little boat, untying the rope and preparing to row. -

Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer. -

Although the importation of slaves from Africa into the United States was banned from 1808, the expansion of slavery into the American Southwest took the form of forced migration within the United States, or at least beneath the United States’s flag. -

We hear the creak of rigging on a ship set adrift. As the lights begin to dim, we hear menacing, thrilling music building in the background. When a single spot is left illuminating the chest, the music comes to a crashing climax and quickly subsides to continue playing in the background. With the musical climax, the lid of the chest opens with a horrifying groan. Light starts to emanate from the chest, and the spotlight dims. Voices and the sounds of action begin to issue forth from the chest. The music continues underneath.) VOICE OF BILLY BONES (singing) "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest - Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest - Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!" It was his mother’s pub when she was alive but now it is his pub. Unfortunately, Jim doesn’t Jlike working in a pub. He likes the sea and dreams of going on a sailing adventure. One day Billy Bones, a pirate, comes into the pub. He dies with a treasure map in his hand. Jim looks at the map. It is a secret treasure map of Treasure Island. It says that on the island there are three clues that will help him find the treasure. Jim decides to go to Treasure Island. He wants the treasure. Of course, Jim needs a ship. He meets Captain Long John Silver and his parrot, Captain Flint. Jim tells Long John Silver about Treasure Island. Long John Silver offers to take Jim on his ship, ‘The Hispaniola’. Jim agrees and they set off on the voyage. Unfortunately for Jim, Long John Silver is a pirate! When they arrive at Treasure Island, Long John Silver tries to steal the map from Jim. But Jim escapes with his map and goes to find the three clues. The three clues that will take him to the treasure. When Jim starts looking for the treasure, he meets an old man called Ben. Ben has been on the island for a long time and helps Jim find the three clues. Clue 1: Change letters on the finger tree. -

4 Nordhoff and Hall’s Mutiny on the Bounty: A Piece of Colonial Historical Fiction Sylvie Largeaud-Ortega University of French Polynesia Introduction Various Bounty narratives emerged as early as 1790. Today, prominent among them are one 20th-century novel and three Hollywood movies. The novel,Mutiny on the Bounty (1932), was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, two American writers who had ‘crossed the beach’1 and settled in Tahiti. Mutiny on the Bounty2 is the first volume of their Bounty Trilogy (1936) – which also includes Men against the Sea (1934), the narrative of Bligh’s open-boat voyage, and Pitcairn’s Island (1934), the tale of the mutineers’ final Pacific settlement. The novel was first serialised in the Saturday Evening Post before going on to sell 25 million copies3 and being translated into 35 languages.
