Miami , Flori daBuenos Aires, Argentina Overview Introduction Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a wonderful combination of sleek skyscrapers and past grandeur, a collision of the ultrachic and tumbledown. Still, there has always been an undercurrent of melancholy in B.A. (as it is affectionately known by expats who call Buenos Aires home), which may help explain residents' devotion to that bittersweet expression of popular culture in Argentina, the tango. Still performed—albeit much less frequently now—in the streets and cafes, the tango has a romantic and nostalgic nature that is emblematic of Buenos Aires itself. Travel to Buenos Aires is popular, especially with stops in the neighborhoods of San Telmo, Palermo— and each of its colorful smaller divisions—and the array of plazas that help make up Buenos Aires tours. College of Architecture and Planning Department of Architecture Ball State University Proposal for Foreign Field Study Program: CAP Americano Sur 2014 [South America + Europe] First summer session: May 16 to June 18 Program director: Associate Professor Ana de Brea Co-director / Invited Faculty: Professor Wes Janz Purpose of the trip: Introduce the students to the unique urban and social history and culture of four countries related to the Latin Culture: Ecuador + Argentina + Portugal + Spain through a study of the architecture and the built environment. Students will travel to selected cities to compare, research, and learn about the art, culture, and architecture in the different countries and the Latin culture. Interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural exchange, and the unique experience of traveling, living, and interacting in different cultures during a month long field study will help students place their university education within a global and cross-cultural perspective. Program description: Ecuador, Argentina,Portugal, and Spain are four significant countries of the Latin atmosphere. Although these countries share common lines of understanding and looking at the world of architecture and design, the choice of these countries for this Ball State University CAP Americano Sur Study Abroad Program 2014 will allow the students discern the unique and distinct cultural, social, topographical, and urban conditions of the four nations by using a comparative, analytical perspective. Scheduled for the first summer session 2014 in this trip the students will visit selected cities: Guayaquil, Quito, Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian, and La Coruña, and will participate in a 2-day workshop at Cordoba National University [invitation by Ian Dutari architect and chair of the department of architecture]. -

São Paulo and Buenos Aires: Urban Cinematic Representation in Contemporary Latin America DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Samuel Cruz Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Professor Laura Podalsky, Advisor Professor Kris Paulsen Professor Pedro Pereira Copyright by Samuel Cruz 2015 Abstract My project analyzes the filmic representation of São Paulo and Buenos Aires in contemporary Brazilian and Argentine fictional cinema (2002-2012) in the wake of major urban renovations that took place in those cities during that same period in the context of larger neoliberal reforms. It proposes a study of filmic representations of these metropolises during a period of significant political, economic, social, and cultural transformations following an era of dictatorship. In particular, this project explores the degree to which these films offer a contestatory vision of this transformation. The socio- economic charges ushered in by the neoliberal platform both in Brazil and Argentina have intensified many social and infra-structural changes: on the one hand, we see unparalleled growth of the number of favelas and villas miseria while on the other hand there exists the renovation and revitalization of affluent areas seen in the construction of an unequaled number of postmodernist-style buildings. At the same time, unprecedented violence surges in urban areas such as São Paulo and Buenos Aires as a consequence of these political-economic measures. The films analyzed here through transdissciplinary lens evidence social gaps based on class division. -
