Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19 May their memory be for a blessing. This lengthy parashah contains the final collection of laws in Bertha Adler Max Lipscitz Deuteronomy, a miscellany dealing with private concerns. Here are laws David Alperin Lieba Lipsey dealing with the individual and the family, communities, and neighbors, as Ben Aronin Seymour Logan opposed to matters of state or public authority. Bernard Berlowitz Luster The parashah begins with three family laws: Laws limiting the Henry Berry Philip Markman prerogatives of a man who captures a woman in warfare; establishing Sol Blitz Rosaline Mayer the rights of a firstborn child in a polygamous family; and discussing the Lillian Blumenthal Samuel Mayer punishment of a ben sorer u-moreh (a stubborn and rebellious son). Solomon Bogot Hazzan Saul Meisels Given that the body reflects the Divine image, the Torah mandates Eve Brownstein Melvin Mendelsohn respectful treatment for the corpse of an executed criminal. Chapman Albert Meyers Chapter 22 presents a series of laws: On returning lost animals and lost Joe Chapman Samuel Micon Anna Kapson Miller property; assisting a fallen animal; maintaining gender distinction in Rose Chapman Harry Morris dress; treatment of a mother bird and her eggs; and building a parapet David Clarren Daniel Cohn Clara Moschel on the roof. Laws follow prohibiting sowing mixed seeds in a single field, Phyllis Novak Leah Dreicer plowing with an ox and ass, and wearing clothing made of shaat-nez Aldolph Pacyna Minnie Ellis (linen and wool). Four-cornered garments require tzitzit (tassels). Beulah Paul Bessie Fink A series of laws about sexual misconduct deals with premarital sex, Gary Reid David J. Fischer Pearl Reifel adultery, and rape. Chapter 23 continues the theme with a listing of Edward A. Fox Leo Roth forbidden relationships, then shifts to a discussion of who may or may Grace Gold Dr. Arthur Rothenberg not enter into God’s assembly. Paul Gold Samuel Rubin The remaining laws span a range of topics: The sanctity of the camp, Hyman Goldstein Jeffrey Samuelson asylum for escaped slaves, and cultic prostitution. Lending on interest is Morton M. Grass Anne R. Seid prohibited, and the fulfillment of vows is mandated. One is allowed to eat Harold M. Greene Leib Shabadash Asnie Shapiro in another person’s vineyard. Jack Hausfater Vera Himmel Jacob Shapiro Chapter 24 continues this eclectic listing, forbidding remarriage to an Anna Siegel Lois Holleb ex-spouse if she remarried in the interim. A man is allowed to postpone Sills Sara Horwitz military service if newly married. There are laws on kidnapping, skin Ruben Silver Victor affliction, taking property to compel repayment of a defaulted loan, and Gretel Simon Belle Kaplan prompt payment of wages. Shelley Spielman Sonia Karchmar Arnold Allen Stern Passion for God requires passion for justice, for “everyone who deals George Kovel Irwin Stier dishonestly is abhorrent to Adonai your God.” The parashah ends with Lena Krom Swartzberg the ultimate symbol of dishonest, cruel treatment – that of Amalek, who Deanna G. Lacerra Mardell Tumpeer “cut down the stragglers in your rear.” Israel is commanded, therefore, to Anita Lee Jamie Wainwright blot out Amalek’s memory.
