  • Hip Hop from '48 Palestine
Social Text Hip Hop from ’48 Palestine Youth, Music, and the Present/Absent Sunaina Maira and Magid Shihade This essay sheds light on the ways in which a particular group of Palestin- ian youth offers a critical perspective on national identity in the colonial present, using hip hop to stretch the boundaries of nation and articulate the notion of a present absence that refuses to disappear. The production of identity on the terrain of culture is always fraught in relation to issues of authenticity, displacement, indigeneity, and nationalism and no more so than in the ongoing history of settler colonialism in Palestine. In the last decade, underground hip hop produced by Palestinian youth has grown and become a significant element of a transnational Palestinian youth culture as well as an expression of political critique that has begun to infuse the global Palestinian rights movement. This music is linked to a larger phenomenon of cultural production by a Palestinian generation that has come of age listening to the sounds of rap, in Palestine as well as in the diaspora, and that has used hip hop to engage with the question of Palestinian self- determination and with the politics of Zionism, colonial- ism, and resistance. Our research focuses on hip hop produced by Palestinian youth within the 1948 borders of Israel, a site that reveals some of the most acute contradictions of nationalism, citizenship, and settler colonialism. Through hip hop, a new generation of “1948 Palestinians” is construct- ing national identities and historical narratives in the face of their ongoing erasure and repression.1 We argue that this Palestinian rap reimagines the geography of the nation, linking the experiences of “ ’48 Palestinians” to those in the Occupied Territories and in the diaspora, and producing an archive of censored histories.

  • Parshat Hashavua Yeshivat Har Etzion PARASHAT HASHAVUA
Parshat HaShavua Yeshivat Har Etzion PARASHAT HASHAVUA PARASHAT VAYIGASH By Rav Yaakov Meidan These are the Names of the Children of Israel – Names and Numbers Our parasha contains the list of the seventy members of Yaakov's house who came to Egypt. The list is rife with difficulties. I) Chetzron and Chamul These two sons of Peretz son of Yehuda are mentioned among those who descended to Egypt during the years of famine. The commentaries have already raised the difficulties concerning the closeness of events in Yehuda's life, which take place during the twenty two years that elapse between the sale of Yosef and the descent of Yaakov's family to Egypt. It will be recalled that Joseph was seventeen at the time that he was sold, thirty at the time of his appointment as viceroy, and that a further seven years of plenty and two years of famine passed before the descent to Egypt. During the course of those twenty-two years, Yehuda married the daughter of Shua, and begat Er and Onan. These two sons consecutively married Tamar and then died. 'Many days passed' before Tamar was deemed able to marry Shela. In the meantime, Yehuda married Tamar and begat Peretz. Peretz himself grew up, married, and begat Chetzron and Chamul who were among those who descended to Egypt. In other words, during the course of twenty two years, three generations were born to Yehuda and came of age, not to mention the 'many days' that Tamar waited in vain for the levirate marriage to take place.

  • The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

  • Tamar: Conscious Choices and Choosing One's Own Destiny
Tamar: Conscious Choices and Choosing One’s Own Destiny Parashat Vayeishev (Genesis 38: 1 – 30) Do you make conscious choices? One of our Torah heroines surely did. Tamar made a conscious choice following the deaths of her husband, Judah’s son Er, Judah’s next son Onan, and Judah’s wife Hirah. Tamar became a childless widow and it seemed as though Judah had no plan to allow his youngest son Shelah to marry Tamar, as biblical law mandated. Judah claimed that Shelah was too young and he could not risk losing another son. However, our heroine Tamar needed a child in order to claim a true stake in the household of Judah. So, she tricked her father-in-law Judah into sleeping with her during his bereavement. Posing as a harlot, Judah solicited Tamar’s services, willingly giving Tamar his signet seal, his cord and his staff, all of which clearly identified him when she would later proclaim Judah’s paternity for her twin sons Perez and Zerah. Not for love or for lust, but rather for a legacy into the future, Tamar made a conscious choice. She took initiative. She changed destiny. And, ironically, Judah admitted, “She is more in the right than I!” (Genesis 38:26) Judah had refused the rights of levirate marriage to Tamar. It all returns to making choices. Each woman on our sisterhood roster has made a conscious choice to join sisterhood. We are grateful to the women who choose to join sisterhood and our congregation, for choosing the path of leadership, and for sharing mitzvah time.

Social Networking, 2016, 5, 1-10 Published Online January 2016 in SciRes. http://www.scirp.org/journal/sn http://dx.doi.org/10.4236/sn.2016.51001 Celebrities Acting up: A Speech Act Analysis in Tweets of Famous People David Nemer School of Information Science, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA Received 2 December 2015; accepted 19 December 2015; published 22 December 2015 Copyright © 2016 by author and Scientific Research Publishing Inc. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Twitter has become very popular among celebrities. It is the main platform used by them to pub- lish press releases and, especially, to reach out to their fans. Given the pervasiveness of celebrities on the site, people with related interests may be especially likely to start using the service due to the perception of direct access to a famous person. As for the celebrities, it is a way of being close to the public and giving them an insight in to the life of a celebrity. Although most celebrity Twitter accounts are only used for promotion purposes, many celebrities use their personal accounts for the purpose of communicating with their fans, friends and other celebrities. These celebrities tweet personal photos and share their inner thoughts for various reasons and to different au- diences. Thus in this study I ask: What are celebrity speech patterns on Twitter? Are they talking mostly to fans, and if not, who are they talking to? How are they talking to these different au- diences? I address these questions by analyzing the tweets publicly available on four active cele- brities’ Twitter timelines.

  • Modern Antisemitism: a Guide to Understanding and Tackling Hatred
Modern Antisemitism: A Guide to Understanding and Tackling Hatred This three part series was made possible by the Russel Berrie Foundation Choose Your Words: Understanding Antisemitism, Anti-Zionism, and Anti-Israel Sentiment WHAT ARE JEWS? WHAT ARE ‘SEMITES?’ Jews are a people, descendants of a tribe, comprising a global cultural community and a religion. These multiple identities are expressed through a shared history, a shared heritage, cultural practices, values and a belief system, and a collective sense of peoplehood with a direct connection to a shared homeland: the Land of Israel. Jews are occasionally referred to as a ‘Semitic’ people. The term ‘Semite’ refers to a specific geographical region, the Levant, with shared linguistic roots. Other Semitic peoples in this region include: Arabs, Phoenicians, Akkadians, etc. When the term ‘antisemitism’ is used, it is used specifically in reference to Jews, not to these other identified communities. WHAT IS ANTISEMITISM? Antisemitism is millennia-old hatred of the Jewish religion, the Jewish people and, most recently, hatred toward the existence of the Jewish state, Israel. WHAT IS ANTI-ZIONISM? There are multiple forms of Zionism: political, cultural, religious, socialist, and more. Zionism emerged in the 19th century as a response to both antisemitism and assimilation. The political formulation of Zionism is the collective liberation movement for Jewish self-determination. Political Zionism is the actualization of Jews building a Jewish nation-state in the Land of Israel. The State of Israel was established in 1948. The borders of Israel remain in dispute due to continued conflict. Historically, anti-Zionism was a political expression within Jewish communal discourse in the 19th and 20th centuries.
