Stone Collection . .144 Lxv Plan of Galleries of Armor . 146 HANDBOOK OF THE COLLECTION INTRODUCTION E casual visitor to a modern museum is apt to THknow little of ancient Arms and Armor, and he may not realize that among connoisseurs these objects rank high in the scale of objets d'art —with ceramics, enamels, i)ronzes, even paintings. For one reason, unless he happens to know the famous collections in a few European capitals, he has prob- ably seen few specimens of armor of good quality. And he does not take into account that the art of the armorer, like the art of the painter or sculptor, can not be well appreciated from poor examples. On the other hand, the every-day visitor to a museum usu- ally associates arms and armor with the elaborately developed panoplies of the sixteenth century—of the time of the Italian wars and of the Field of the Cloth of Gold—and he pictures armor as a ceremonial equipment, etched, gilded, and embossed, worn as often in the court as in the camp, when swords were richly wrought, incrusted with silver and gold, and when halberds, which so often form an attractive portion of the sky-line in pictures of those days, 2 INTRODUCTION were fretted, etched, and gilded, their long shafts sheathed in velvet, and rich with silk tassels and gilded studs. These splendid equipments, it is true, represent an important side of the armorer's art. But it is equally true, from an artistic standpoint, that some of the most interesting objects were the earlier and simpler types which were beautiful rather in their lines and surfaces than in their mere enrich- ment. It is, then, from an examination of good specimens of armor and arms of various periods that one real- izes that they well deserve their place in a museum of art. And in this conclusion we need consider neither their historical value, as a means of picturing more accurately scenes and personages of known periods, nor their sentimental interest—which they possess to a degree rarely found in other objects of art—nor their supposed mystical significance. In the last regard, we recall the myths of god-like armorers and enchanted arms, which belonged to all early times and to all peoples. Unfortunately for the general public, representa- tive collections of these objects were not to be seen, until late years at least, on this side of the Atlantic. And even abroad few museums exhibited armor ade- quately. In fact, in the case of European armor, about ninety per cent of the best examples extant are restricted to but seven national European collec- tions, i.

Ballistic testing was conducted to estimate the velocity at which 50% of 12-bore lead spherical projectiles (V50) would be expected to perforate this clothing system when mounted on gelatine (a tissue simulant used in wound ballistic studies). An estimated six-shot V50 for the clothing system was calculated as 102 m/s. The distance at which the projectile would have decelerated from the muzzle of the weapon to this velocity in free flight was triple the recognised effective range of weapons of the era suggesting that the clothing system would provide limited protection for the wearer. The estimated V50 was also compared with recorded bounce-and-roll data; this suggested that the clothing system could provide some protection to the wearer from ricochets. Finally, potential wounding behind the clothing system was investigated; the results compared favourably with seventeenth century medical writings. Keywords Leather . Linen . Wool . ABSTRACT There is now a widely accepted need for stab resistant body armour for the police in the UK. However, very little research has been done on knife resistant systems and the penetration mechanics of sharp projectiles are poorly understood. This thesis explores the general background to knife attack and defence with a particular emphasis on the penetration mechanics of edged weapons. The energy and velocity that can be achieved in stabbing actions has been determined for a number of sample populations. The energy dissipated against the target was shown to be primarily the combined kinetic energy of the knife and the arm of the attacker. The compliance between the hand and the knife was shown to significantly affect the pattern of energy delivery. Flexibility and the resulting compliance of the armour was shown to have a significant effect upon the absorption of this kinetic energy. The ability of a knife to penetrate a variety of targets was studied using an instrumented drop tower. It was found that the penetration process consisted of three stages, indentation, perforation and further penetration as the knife slides through the target. Analysis of the indentation process shows that for slimmer indenters, as represented by knives, frictional forces dominate, and indentation depth becomes dependent upon the coefficient of friction between indenter and sample.

    Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

    ACTA UNI VERSITATIS LODZIENSIS FOLIA ARCHAEOLOGICA 23, 2001 Nicholas Victor Sekunda THE SARISSA INTRODUCTION Recent years have seen renewed interest in Philip and Alexander, not least in the sphere of military affairs. The most complete discussion of the sarissa, or pike, the standard weapon of Macedonian footsoldiers from the reign of Philip onwards, is that of Lammert. Lammert collects the ancient literary evidence and there is little one can disagree with in his discussion of the nature and use of the sarissa. The ancient texts, however, concentrate on the most remarkable feature of the weapon - its great length. Unfor- tunately several details of the weapon remain unclear. More recent discussions o f the weapon have tried to resolve these problems, but I find myself unable to agree with many of the solutions proposed. The purpose of this article is to suggest some alternative possibilities using further ancient literary evidence and also comparisons with pikes used in other periods of history. 1 do not intend to cover those aspects of the sarissa already dealt with satisfactorily by Lammert and his predecessors'. THE PIKE-HEAD Although the length of the pike is the most striking feature of the weapon, it is not the sole distinguishing characteristic. What also distinguishes a pike from a common spear is the nature of the head. Most spears have a relatively broad head designed to open a wide flesh wound and to sever blood vessels. 1 hey are usually used to strike at the unprotected parts of an opponent’s body. The pike, on the other hand, is designed to penetrate body defences such as shields or armour.

ARMAMENT OF THE ARMY OF THE POLISH – LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH IN XVIII CENTURY T THE BEGINNING of the 18th century in almost all European A countries the unification process of the equipment of units, military formations and even entire armies had been finished. As far as the armament was concerned the main principle was that all soldiers of an independent unit, i.e. a regiment, had to be equipped with identical firearms and melee weapons. As early as by the half of the 18th century in some European armies this principle applied to entire formations (infantry, dragoons, cavalry of various types). This was caused by attempts at minimizing the costs of equipping expanding armies on the one hand, and at increasing their combat efficiency on the other. As a result two issues had to be harmonized – the lowest possible price of the equipment, its good quality with regard to certain simplicity of use and efficiency aimed at eliminating the opponent, as well as operational durability. The latter resulted from legal regulations applicable in specific armies, which stipulated that firearms were subject to replacement every 10, 12 or even 15 years. As far as melee weapons were concerned their lifespan was slightly shorter, i.e. 6–10 years. As for the defensive armaments, in the case of cavalry formations where it had been retained, they were to remain a part of the equipment until they could be no longer used due to damage. All those requirements along with manpower count, which in the case of countries operating actively in international political arena amounted to between 180 thousand and over 300 thousand soldiers, effected a large scale of armament production in specialized manufactories.

In general, 5th edition is far more accurate to ancient and medieval sources regarding these topics than prior editions, but for the sake of balance and ease of play without the onerous restrictions of reality, there are still some expected incongruences. This article attempts to explain some particular facets about the use of arms and armor throughout our long, shared history, and to offer some suggestions (imbalanced as they may be) on how such items would have been used in particular times and places. A note on generalities: One of the best things 5th edition offers in these tables is the generalization of particular weapons and armor compared to prior editions. Is there a significant, functional difference between a half-sword, arming sword, backsword, wakizashi, tulwar, or any other various forms of predominately one-handed pokey and slashy things with 13 inch, sometimes 14 or 20 or even 30 inch blades? Well, actually yes, but that level of discrimination is often not noticeable in the granularity of the combat mechanics of most systems, and, more importantly, how modern readers often distinguish them is often anachronistic. For instance, almost all straight sword-like weapons, be it arming swords, half-swords, back swords, longswords or even great swords like claymores (but not Messers!) are referred to in ancient and medieval texts (MS I.33, Liberi, etc) as… swords.

    The Journal of the Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Association FALL 2015 Heart of the AG Corps CSM Edwards assumes AG Corps Regimental Sergeant Major Responsibilities from SGM Shirley FORT JACKSON – On 27 August 2015, COL Jack L. Usrey, Chief of the Adjutant General’s Corps, conducted a change of responsibility ceremony as CSM Nyeedra Edwards assumed duties as the AG Corps Regimental Sergeant Major from SGM Todd Shirley. CSM Edwards was previously assigned as the Command Sergeant Major, 30th Adjutant General Reception Battalion, Fort Benning, GA, where she served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Soldiers arriving at Fort Benning for basic training. She also served as G1 Sergeant Major, 32d AAMDC, Fort Bliss, TX, where she managed the AAMDC’s junior Soldiers and NCO Corps. See CSM Edwards’ complete biography within Section I of this edition of 1775. SGM Shirley assumed duties as the 8th Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Sergeant Major on 16 July 2014. Prior to becoming the Regimental Sergeant Major, SGM Shirley was assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps G1 where he also served with the USFOR-A J1 in Afghanistan. SGM Shirley’s next assignment is the Command Sergeant Major for the 18th CSSB in Grafenwoehr, Germany. He will be accompanied by his wife April and their two daughters, Maddie and Sophia. SGM Todd Shirley affixes the coveted Regimental Sergeant Major streamer in his name to the AG Corps spontoon as the 8th Regimental SGM.
