But, fortunate is the student who enjoys the subject of his research. This slim volume is essentially the original manuscript, except for minor changes in the interest of greater accuracy, which was approved in 1964 by Drs. James Parsons, Gunther Barth and the late Carl Sauer. That it is being published now, perhaps as a response to a new awareness of and interest in our past, is due to the efforts of the “Friends of the Alameda Free Library” who have made a project of getting my thesis into print. I wish to thank the members of this organization and all others, whose continued interest and perseverance have made this publication possible. Hayward Full-Service Community Schools Program Project Narrative Introduction – Absolute and Competitive Preference Priorities Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) is applying for funding as the lead agency for the Hayward Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) Program on behalf of our Hayward Full-Ser- vice Community Schools Consortium. Our application meets the Absolute Priority and three of the Competitive Preference Priorities for this grant competition as follows. ABSOLUTE PRIORITY. The proposed project will serve 12 full-service community schools in HUSD (10 elementary, one middle, and one high school), all classified as Title 1 schools. The schools collectively serve 7,719 students, 73% of whom are economically disadvantaged (rang- ing from 56% to 90%, depending on the school (see Table 1). COMPETITIVE PREFERENCE PRIORITY 2 – BROADLY REPRESENTATIVE CONSORTIUM. The Hayward Full-Service Community Schools Collaborative is a broad-based consortium of part- ners, including key public, private, and higher education stakeholders in the success of Hayward children and families. Our Collaborative incorporates and enlarges the existing Hayward Promise Neighborhoods (HPN) Consortium, which implemented a cradle-to-college-and-career pipeline of services targeting one high-poverty neighborhood in Hayward (the Jackson Triangle) from 2012 to 2016 and expanded to a include a second neighborhood (South Hayward) beginning in 2018. Five of the 12 schools to be served by the proposed Hayward FSCS program have been served by the Hayward Promise Neighborhoods -

WWW.GOSTANFORD.COM • 41 Jim HARBAUGH HEAD COACH Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football Stanford University im Harbaugh, who was appointed the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football on JDecember 19, 2006, wasted little time in making a big impression in the college football circles in his first season as Stanford’s head coach. Stanford was one of the most improved teams in the Pacific-10 Conference last season under Harbaugh, whose infectious energy and enthusiasm immediately took hold of the program. The Cardinal finished with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-6 mark in conference play last season following a 2006 campaign which saw the team win just one game in 12 outings. Included in last year’s win total was an epic, 24-23 upset win over USC, ranked first in the USA Today Coaches poll and second by the Associated Press at the time, and a convincing win over defending Pac-10 Conference co-champion California, breaking the Bears five-game winning streak in the Big Game. While a pair of signature victories served notice Stanford’s program was again on the rise, Harbaugh is more than ready to push the envelope a little further this season as the Cardinal continue its journey to the upper echelon of a talent-rich conference in its quest to become perennial bowl participants. -
