The seeds are known to contain edible fat, but have only scarcely been used on a commercial scale, e.g. in Tanzania. In most parts of Africa, the use of Allanblackia has been decreased over the last 50 years to the favour of other, mostly liquid oils. Nevertheless, Allanblackia has been identified by amongst others FAO as a crop of high potential interest to the development of rural communities. This work aims to contribute to the development of this idea by quantifying the potential on a district level. The nine species of Allanblackia are mainly distributed in wet evergreen rain forest, lowland from Sierra Leone to Congo, and upland eastwards to Tanzania. In west and central Africa the species become much more abundant in the very wet forest types, reaching densities above 1000 trees per km2. Data from timber inventories were processed to estimate the density of Allanblackia trees.

This study seeks to evaluate the phytoconstituents of Allanblackia floribunda. Qualitative phytochemical screening, proximate analysis and volatile compounds present in the seeds were evaluated using standard methods. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids and saponins in the seeds. The result from the proximate compositions showed that the seed had high fibre (4.21%), lipid (10.46%), protein (19.25%), and carbohydrate (61.26%) contents.

The favorable physicochemical characteristics of Allanblackia oil (solid at room temperature; high stearic acid content) lend food products that contain it (i.e., vegetable-based dairy products, ice cream, spreads) health advantages over others that contain higher levels of lauric, myristic, and/or palmitic acids, which can increase blood cholesterol levels. Such considerations are important for individuals prone to cardiovascular disease or with hypercholesterolemia. Domestication projects of several Allanblackia species in tropical Africa are underway, but wildcrafting of fruits to meet the seed demand still occurs. Proper species authentication is important, since only authenticated oil can be deemed safe for human consumption. The chemical constituency of Allanblackia seed oils, and potential roles of these phytochemicals in preventive strategies (e.g., as part of a healthy diet) and as pharmacological agents used to treat chronic disease were examined in this review. The primary and secondary metabolite constituency of the seed oils of nearly all Allanblackia species is still poorly known.

The results of phylogenetic analyses of 1240 nrDNA ITS sequences of Apiaceae subfamily Apioideae, representing 292 genera and 959 species from all major clades of the subfamily except those most basally branching, were compared to a preexisting phylogenetic classification for the group based on several molecular markers and a smaller sampling of taxa. This was done to confirm previously defined tribal and generic limits and to identify additional major clades and genera whose monophyly and relationships can be tested in future studies. All species for which ITS data are available in Gen- Bank plus newly obtained sequences for 53 additional taxa were considered for inclusion in this study and their simultaneous analysis permitted misidentifications and other problematic sequences to be revealed. Analyses of these ITS data, in conjunction with results of recently published molecular stud- ies, identified 41 major clades in Apioideae, of which 21 have already been recognized at the tribal or subtribal rank. No major changes to the preexisting phylogenetic classification of Apioideae are pro- posed, other than the recognition of additional major clades and the expansion of others to accom- modate increased sampling.

Our research included pollen sampled from 417 herbarium specimens representing 158 species belonging to 125 genera distributed among all major lineages of Apiales. The pollen was mechanically isolated, acetolysed, suspended in pure glycerine and mounted on paraffin-sealed slides for light microscopy investigation. Although most of the analysed traits were highly homoplastic and showed significant overlap even between distantly related lineages, we were able to construct a taxonomic key based on characters that bear the strongest phylogenetic signal: P/E ratio, mesocolpium shape observed in polar view and ectocolpus length relative to polar diameter.
