Et Perr. It has been widely used in Burkina Faso by traditional medicine for the treatment of hypertension. Previous study showed that the dichloromethanolic fraction from the barks of trunk of A. leiocarpa (ALF) has induced an endothelium-independent and endothelium- dependent vasodilation effect and had the capacity to inhibit in vitro, purified cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) activity. The aims of this study were to better underline ALF-induced endothelium-independent vasorelaxation in an organ model. The results showed that ALF significantly reduce the contractile response to U46619 in porcine coronary artery rings without endothelium that were in concentration-dependent manner. -
Anatomical Assessment of the Fibers in the Trunk of Alstonia Boonei for Some Derived Indexes

Adetunji Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria *E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT Derived anatomical indexes such as Runkel’s ratio, Flexibility coefficient and Felting power / Slenderness ratio of the fibers in the trunk of Alstonia boonei were assessed using standard procedures and formulas. Significant differences (P≤ 0.05) existed in the Runkel’s ratio and Flexibility coefficient of the fibers along the axial position of the trunk, whereas, along the radial position, the differences were not significant (P≤0.05). Conversely, the Felting power/ Slenderness ratio of the fibers along the axial and radial positions of the trunk were not significantly different (P≤0.05) from one another. Totals of 0.65 ± 1.33, 68.32 ± 15.39 and 39.89 ± 15.41 were the Runkel’s ratio, Flexibility coefficient and Felting power/Slenderness ratio of the fibers. In view of the results obtained in the present assessment, assertions confirming the suitability of the trunk of Alstonia boonei as alternative sources of raw material for pulp and paper production were made. Department of Agriculture - - - - Introduction The forests of Liberia represent a valuable resource to that country-- especially so because they are renewable. Under good management, these forests will continue to supply mankind with products long after mined resources are exhausted. The vast treeless areas elsewhere in Africa give added emphasis to the economic significance of the forests of Liberia and its neighboring countries in West Africa. The mature forests of Liberia are composed entirely of broadleaf or hardwood tree species. These forests probably covered more than 90 percent of the country in the past, but only about one-third is now covered with them. Another one-third is covered with young forests or reproduction referred to as low bush. The mature, or "high," forests are typical of tropical evergreen or rain forests where rainfall exceeds 60 inches per year without pro longed dry periods. Certain species of trees in these forests, such as the cotton tree, are deciduous even when growing in the coastal area of heaviest rainfall, which averages about 190 inches per year. Dose was selected from the literature and the dose chosen for the study is 200 mg/kg, a small trial on acute toxicity was used to confirm the dose by using 2000 mg/kg, and there was no mortality found, so 1/10 th of this dose was chosen for analgesic activity. Normally herbal drugs are free of side effects and available in low cost. The methanolic extract of Anogeissus latifolia at 200 mg/kg showed a significant analgesic activity in tail immersion, tail flick, and hot plate model when compared to that of standard drug. The genus exhibits as extreme a diversity of floral form as is found anywhere in angiosperms and there are many unresolved taxonomic issues surrounding the genus. -

Origin and geographic distribution Allanblackia stuhlmannii is endemic to Tanzania, where it occurs in the Eastern Arc Mountains, extending through Iringa Region to the Southern Highlands. Uses The seed yields an edible fat called ‘allanblackia fat’ or ‘kanye butter’. It is used in cooking and has been used as a substitute for butter and cocoa butter, and to make candles. Recently, the international food industry has become interested in the fat as a natural solid component for margarines and similar products. The presscake is bitter and contains tannins, but is sometimes used as animal feed. The seeds are used as bait for small game. The wood is used for construction, cheap joinery, boxes, crates, beehives and water containers. It is also used as fuel. In traditional medicine, the leaves are chewed to treat cough, while the leaves, bark and roots are used to treat impotence. A seed extract is rubbed in to treat rheumatism. The fat is applied as a liniment on aching joints, wounds and rashes and small quantities are taken to treat rheumatism. Hehe people rub the fat mixed with pounded seeds of Psorospermum febrifugum Spach on deep cracks in the soles of the feet. The bark yields a yellow dye. Female trees of Allanblackia stuhlmannii are retained when land is cleared for cultivation and are possibly occasionally planted for shade in crops and for amenity. -

ABSTRACT The effects of ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea on haematological indices were investigated in albino rats using standard methods. Twenty four albino rats were randomly placed into four experimental groups (A, B, C and D) after seven days of acclimatization with six rats in each group. Animals in groups A, B, C and D were administered the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea at the doses of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight respectively twice daily for fourteen days through oral intubation. The results showed that haemoglobin (Hb) level, Packed Cell Volume (PCV), red blood cell (RBC) count and white blood cell (WBC) count increased significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently. The results suggest that the ethanol leaf-extract of Albizia ferruginea could be effective in the management of anaemia.
