I hope this report helps you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, I’m happy to help. Please excuse the length of this report, I didn’t have time to make it shorter :) This is why I start with a small summary of the most important points before going into more detail: Summary: Boğaziçi University in Istanbul is primarily known among Turkish people to be a very prestigious elite university. Its medium of instruction is English. It is a state-owned university, meaning it is comparatively cheap to study there and the university provides a lot of services for the students (okay, this might not be true for all state-owned universities). I was one of two students from OvGU to go there in 2015/16, the other one was Alena. Bare in mind that Istanbul is experiencing frequent terrorist attacks, but different people experience different levels of fear and discomfort – so you might be completely fine. Application process at Boğaziçi University: No visa was needed. Expect deadline end of April, though it might be postponed. Documents to be prepared: ◦ Language Certificate for English (e.g.

TITLE Investigating Implementation Potentials of Turbo Roundabouts in Nevada 2. PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Matthew Vechione, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Texas at Tyler. 3. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION Modern roundabouts have been gaining popularity in the United States in the past decade due to the safety benefits as well as other positive impacts (such as reduction in delay) that they bring to the communities. The safety benefits are contributed by the geometric design of the entry approach and circulatory roadway, which reduce vehicle speed and shifting right-angle crashes to angle or sideswipe collisions. A new variant of the modern roundabout, known as the turbo roundabout, has potential to further reduce angle and sideswipe crashes.

applied sciences Article The Design of a Metro Network Using a Genetic Algorithm Aleksander Król 1,* and Małgorzata Król 2 1 Faculty of Transport, Silesian University of Technology, Krasi´nskiego8, 40-019 Katowice, Poland 2 Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, Silesian University of Technology, Konarskiego 18, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +48-326-034-120 Received: 30 December 2018; Accepted: 26 January 2019; Published: 28 January 2019 Featured Application: A quick method that allows one to obtain a draft of a metro network. Abstract: The process of planning the metro system is very complex. This is due to the large amount of required input data originating from many domains. Additionally, the required extraordinary budget makes the design phase difficult and forces some trade-offs to meet most expectations. Designing a metro system requires often a multi-variant analysis to examine possible future ways of urban agglomeration development. In such circumstances there is a need to apply an efficient method, which allows for obtaining a draft design of a metro system. This paper presents an application of a genetic algorithm for two stages of a metro system design. The first stage determines the layout of metro stations, which optimally meets the transportations demands of the inhabitants. The second stage generates the optimal topology of lines connecting the stations, taking into account the minimization of construction costs and the total travel time of all passengers. The parameters, which control the operation of the optimization procedures, were tuned with the use of the Taguchi method.
