AESTHETIC POLITICS OF AFFECT AND AUTONOMY In Arundhati Virmani (ed.), Political Aesthetics: Culture, Critique and the Everyday, London, Routledge, 2016, p.71-86. The emergence of techno music – commonly used in France as electronic dance music – in the early 1990s is inseparable from rave parties as a form of spatiotemporal deployment. It signifies that the live diffusion via a sound system powerful enough to diffuse not only its volume but also its sound frequencies spectrum, including infrabass, is an integral part of the techno experience. In other words listening on domestic equipment is not a sufficient condition to experience this music.

  • Technics, Precarity and Exodus in Rave Culture
29 Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture • vol 1 no 2 Technics, Precarity and Exodus in Rave Culture TOBIAS C. VAN VEEN MCGILL UNIVERSITY Abstract Without a doubt, the question of rave culture’s politics – or lack thereof – has polarized debate concerning the cultural, social and political value of rave culture not only within electronic dance music culture (EDMC) studies, but in disciplines that look to various manifestations of subculture and counterculture for political innovation. It is time for the groundwork of this debate to be rethought. Ask not what rave culture’s politics can do for you; nor even what you can do for it. Rather, ask what the unexamined account of politics has ever done for anyone; then question all that rave culture has interrogated – from its embodied and technological practices to its production of ecstatic and collective subjectivities – and begin to trace how it has complicated the very question of the political, the communal and the ethical. This complication begins with the dissolution of the boundaries of labour and leisure and the always-already co-optation of culture. To the negation of ethics, community and politics, this tracing calls for the hauntology of technics, precarity and exodus. And it ends with a list of impossible demands demonstrating the parallax gap of rave culture’s politics. Keywords exodus, precarity, technics, multitude, workplay He [Randy] predicted the [rave] parties will eventually disappear under the combined pressure of police, city and fire officials. “In the next year and a half it’s going to vanish”, he said. “Then, when they think it’s gone, it will come back, becoming more underground again”.

  • Folk for Art's Sake: English Folk Music in the Mainstream Milieu
Volume 4 (2009) ISSN 1751-7788 Folk for Art’s Sake: English Folk Music in the Mainstream Milieu Simon Keegan-Phipps University of Sheffield The English folk arts are currently undergoing a considerable resurgence; 1 practices of folk music, dance and drama that explicitly identify themselves as English are the subjects of increasing public interest throughout England. The past five years have seen a manifold increase in the number of professional musical acts that foreground their Englishness; for the first time since the last 'revival period' of the 1950s and 60s, it is easier for folk music agents to secure bookings for these English acts in England than Scottish and Irish (Celtic) bands. Folk festivals in England are experiencing greatly increased popularity, and the profile of the genre has also grown substantially beyond the boundaries of the conventional 'folk scene' contexts: Seth Lakeman received a Mercury Music Awards nomination in 2006 for his album Kitty Jay; Jim Moray supported Will Young’s 2003 UK tour, and his album Sweet England appeared in the Independent’s ‘Cult Classics’ series in 2007; in 2003, the morris side Dogrose Morris appeared on the popular television music show Later with Jools Holland, accompanied by the high-profile fiddler, Eliza Carthy;1 and all-star festival-headliners Bellowhead appeared on the same show in 2006.2 However, the expansion in the profile and presence of English folk music has 2 not been confined to the realms of vernacular, popular culture: On 20 July 2008, BBC Radio 3 hosted the BBC Proms

  • Groovology & the Magic of Other People's Music
Groovology and the Magic of Other People’s Music Charles Keil While the word “groove” seems to be gaining ever greater currency, the explorations and wording of groove phenomena in "musicking" (Small 1998) does not seem to be a rapidly growing field of groovology per se. 1 This paper tries to explain the general lack of academic interest in groovology as a discipline and then argues that some important issues can’t be grasped without it. Every groove is both a mystery or Batesonian 'sacrament' as well as a practical, pragmatic or testable practice within a 'joyous science' of measuring "— ultimately, any 'difference which makes a difference,' traveling in a circuit." (Bateson 1991:xiii) The practical question is something like: what do we have to do with our bodies playing these instruments and singing in order to get their bodies moving, bobbing their heads, snapping their fingers, up from their tables and dancing? The mystery: how do people and musicking become consubstantial, a communion, communitas , a sacrament, the music inside the people and the people inside the music? In Music Grooves (Keil and Feld 1994) and in the “Special Issue: Participatory Discrepancies” of Ethnomusicology (Vol. 39, No. 1, Winter 1995, articles by Keil, Progler, Alen, and 11 respondents) we have tried to persuade ethnomusicologists and other potentially interested scholars (in fields as diverse as political rhetoric, sermonizing, comedy-timing, sex-therapy, sports psychology, play, etc.) that in asking these two questions and in this wording of grooves,

  • Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio Between the US and Syria
Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.
