CHAPTER 3

Intarsia

Most patterns repeat the specific arrangement of stitches and have floating loops on the back side of the work caused by carrying the from the last stitch of that color to the next stitch of the same color.

When you want to knit designs that do not repeat patterns across the work and require more than two or three colors, especially in large designs, Intarsia ‐ or bobbin knitting ‐ is the answer. Since you do not carry not knitted on the back side of the work, there are no floating loops.

In other words, Intarsia is freehand Fair Isle without having to limit the number of stitches per pattern to avoid the lengthy floating loops, or the number of colors that can be used. Intarsia knitting is like painting pictures on the .

1. With Color A. cast on 40 stitches, knit several rows and end with the cam on right. Remove the yarn from yarn feeder, set the cam to slip, and slide it (free pass) to the left. 2. Referring to your manual, set the cam for Intarsia and move it from left to right (All needles come out from working position to main position without knitting and all latches are open now.) 3. Place all yarns on the floor for hand feeding, and referring to the diagram, begin Intarsia knitting as follows

a. Lay Color A (taken from the yarn feeder in Step 2) from right to left beginning on right edge needle to needle #2 on right of O. Hang the yarn end in space between needles #1 & #2.

b. Hang Color B on needle #1 on right of 0 and hang a mini weight.

e. Move the cam from right to left (this movement of the cam knits 1 row and brings all the needles to middle position for laying yarn for the next row)

4. Referring to the pattern diagram, lay yarns from left to right and knit the 2nd row as follows:

a. Lay Color A‐2 on left edge needle to needle #3, and hang the yarn end in space between needles #2 & #3.

b. Cross 2 yarns (Color A‐2 and Color C) by taking Color C (next color) from under Color A‐2, and laying Color C on needles #1 & #2 on left of O.

c. Cross 2 yarns (Colors C & B) by taking Color B (next color) from under Color C and laying Color B on needles #2 & #1 on right of O.

d. Cross 2 yarns (Colors B & A) by taking Color A (next color) from under Color B and laying Color A on needles #3 (on right of 0) to the edge.

e. Move the cam from left to right (this knits the 2nd row and brings needles to middle position with latches open for laying yarns for the next row.

5. Referring to the pattern diagram, lay yarns from right to left and knit the 3nd row as follows:

a. Lay Color A on needles on right edge to #4 on right of O.

b. Cross yarns by taking Color B from under Color A and laying on needles #3 ‐ #1 on right of O.

c. Cross yarns by taking Color C from under Color B. and laying yarn on needles #1 ‐ #3 on left of O.

d. Cross yarns by taking Color A‐2 from under Color C and laying it on needles #4 on left of 0 to the end.
