On the Surnames of Latin American Presidents
BASQUE LEGACY IN THE NEW WORLD: ON THE SURNAMES OF LATIN AMERICAN PRESIDENTS Patxi Salaberri Iker Salaberri UPNA / NUP UPV / EHU Abstract In this article we explain the etymology of the surnames of Basque origin that some presidents of Latin American countries have or have had in the past. These family names were created in the language called Euskara, in the Basque Country (Europe), and then, when some of the people who bore them emigrated to America, they brought their sur- names with them. Most of the family names studied here are either oiconymic or topo- nymic, but it must be kept in mind that the oiconymic ones are, very often, based on house-nicknames, that is, they are anthroponymic in the first place. As far as possible, we have related the surname, when its origin is oiconymic or toponymic, to its source, i.e. to the house or place where it was created. Key words: Basque, etymology, family name, Latin America, oiconym, placename, nickname. Laburpena Artikulu honetan Erdialdeko eta Hego Amerikako herrialdeetako presidente batzuek dituzten eta izan dituzten euskal jatorriko deituren etimologia azaltzen dugu. Abizenok euskararen barnean sortu ziren, Euskal Herrian, eta euskaldunek Ameriketara emigratu zutelarik eraman zituzten berekin. Aztertzen diren deitura gehienak etxe edo toki ize- nak dira, baina aintzat hartu behar da oikonimikoek, askotan, etxe izengoitietan dutela sorburu, hots, antroponimikoak zirela hasmentan. Ahal izan dugunean abizena iturria- rekin lotu dugu, etorkiz etxe edo leku izena zenean, alegia, deitura sortu zen etxe edo le- kuarekin batu dugu. Giltza hitzak: Euskara, etimologia, deitura, Hego eta Erdialdeko Amerika, etxe izena, leku izena, izengoitia. -

Farm-To-Family / Adv. in Basque Country 2014
BASQUE FAMILY BONDS Farm-to-Family Adventures in the Deep Heart of Basque Country 2014 Departures: July 27 and August 17 -- or as a private family departure any time Eight days exploring deep Basque Country, including: Bilbao, Ordizia, Mutriku, Zumaia, San Sebastian, Beizama and Bidegoian Trip Overview The first things that come to mind when asked to conjure up Basque Country may be the glittering Guggenheim or San Sebastian’s cult of culinary superstars. And while world class art & architecture and Michelin-starred restaurants are indeed fascinating features of this remarkable region, it’s the fierce independence of the region’s proud people, the dramatic diversity of its landscapes and the supreme importance placed on family, food and friends that leave their indelible mark on us. And through this lens of family-focused adventure, discovery and connection, we’ll enter deep into the heart of Basque culture. Whether milking sheep & making cheese on a small farm, navigating Bilbao from the perch of a paddleboard, hiking to a 17th C. farmstead for a home-hosted meal or gathered around the rustic wooden table of a cider house, we’ll experience Basque Country accompanied by local friends, exploring its natural grandeur and experiencing its most cherished family traditions. We’ve crafted this trip with families and their shared experience at its core. We’ve controlled the tempo, minimized travel times & hotel changes, built-in plenty of unstructured time and have even arranged for a parents’ night out. After all, at the heart of our Basque team are families that love to travel together, too – from my own, to our trip leader’s, to our favorite Basque ambassador and host, Pello, and his beautiful three generations of family that we’re fortunate enough to meet along the way. -

SARRERA Lan honetan1 Euskal Herri osoan burutzen gabiltzan azentuari buruzko lan orokor baten datuetan oinarrituta, Gipuzkoan jaso ditugun berba isola- tuen arabera, azentua ere kontutan hartuta, herrien aldentze maila aztertu nahi dugu. Alderaketak egin ahal izateko, mugatzaile singularrarekin jasotako berba isolatuak erabiliko ditugu. Argi dago zenbait barietatetan markatuen jokabi- dea neurtzeko ez dena nahikoa berbak isolatuki jasotzea, izan ere, berba hauen jokabidea ilun samarra izan daiteke, eta talde fonologikoan baino ezin iger daiteke euren izaera markatua (ikus bitez esatebaterako: Hualde 1995, Gaminde eta Hualde 1995). Guztiarekin ere, hemengo helburuetarako nahi- ko erizpide ona dela uste dugu.
