Welcome to the Department Welcome to the graduate program in American Studies at Saint Louis University! Our department is committed to excellence and originality in research, teaching, and service. Together, we work towards these goals by building strong mentoring relationships, establishing dynamic and innovative classroom experiences, and disseminating research through conferences, workshops, exhibits, and publications. Our graduate students enter our programs with a variety of interests, skills, backgrounds, and professional histories. This is a strength of our interdisciplinary community. At the same time, graduate student cohorts move together through a rigorous curriculum designed to ground their efforts in a common experience and frame of reference. This handbook serves as an outline of expectations, requirements, and policies regarding your coursework and degree work. Your faculty cohort advisor will go over these with you, and we keep a copy of the most recent handbook on our website. You should also keep this handbook as a reference as you proceed through the program. Both the Office of Graduate Education and the Department of American Studies can make policy changes, so we update this handbook almost every year. Should a major change be made after your first year, you will almost always be offered the option either to follow the new policies or to adhere to the ones from your year of entry. No doubt you will have questions as you move through your program, but advising and support are easy to find. All incoming students are advised by a faculty cohort advisor until they choose their faculty advisor. For MA students, this is normally by the end of their first year; for doctoral students, this is normally by the end of their second year. Graduate students who begin to teach their own courses will also work with the Department’s Pedagogy Mentor. You will routinely receive feedback from the faculty members who teach your courses, who mentor you as a graduate assistant, and, later on, who serve on your committee. Should you choose to complete an internship, the faculty Internship Supervisor will support that process. In addition, all incoming students are assigned a peer mentor to help ease the transition to graduate school. In short, each member of our American Studies community—staff, faculty, undergraduate and graduate students—will try to answer your questions, prod your thinking in new directions, and develop your skills. Graduate Student Profiles Here, the term “PhD student” refers to all students who have been accepted into programs culminating in receipt of a PhD, including those still formally in the MA phase of the MA-to-PhD program. “PhD candidate” refers to PhD students who have passed their comprehensive exams. Beatrice Beirne Combined BA/MA student | she/her [email protected] I am in my second year of the American Studies MA program. In 2021, I received my BA in American Studies and Political Science (with minors in Communication and Political Journalism) from Saint Louis University. I am now studying how American experiences are expressed through political actions, with a focus on public art and political movements. I am particularly interested in the topics of labor rights and workers’ justice movements in cultural elements, including fashion, photography, and protest imagery. In May of 2021, I completed my undergraduate capstone titled “For Work, for Rest, for Selfies: Solidarity Portraiture and Capitalist Photography in Post-Automation America.” My research explored the use of photography as a tool of both oppression and resistance in American workplaces. After grad school, I am interested in pursuing a career in advocacy and public policy. Michael Brickey PhD candidate | he/him [email protected] Dissertation working title: “Down to the Wire: Cultures of Energy, Politics of Infrastructure, and Energy Justice in the American Midwest since the 1970s” I study United States cultures of the 20th and 21st centuries with a focus on the culture and political economies of place. My research interests fall primarily at the interdisciplinary intersection of urban and environmental studies, but also cultural geography, critical race, ethnic, and Indigenous studies, and the energy humanities. My dissertation project will examine the politics of 6 climate change, cultures of energy, and various entanglements over place in the American Midwest. I have a BA in Political Science with a Geography minor from the University of Missouri, an MA in history from San Diego State University, and an MA in American Studies from St. Louis University. In 2019, I helped to co-found the Graduate Public Humanities Working Group at SLU, a volunteer, student-run organization open to all graduate students in the humanities and social sciences with interest in the broad and diverse field of Public Humanities. Aretha D. Butler PhD candidate [email protected] Dissertation working title: “On the Front Lines: Culture Wars in the Era of Black Lives Matter, 2012–2018” I am a doctoral student, originally from the Bronx, New York, and began at SLU in Fall 2012. I am also pursuing a graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at SLU. I attended DePauw University from 2005 to 2009 as a Posse Scholar and majored in Black Studies and Women’s Studies. After graduating from DePauw, I taught middle-school math in New York City as a Teach for America corps member. My current research interests include black popular culture, transnational studies, and critical race theory and race in post–civil rights America. Victoria Cannon PhD candidate | she/her/hers [email protected] Dissertation working title: “Between Visits: Twentieth-Century Tourism on the US/Mexico Border” I am currently a PhD candidate, after having received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (with a minor in History) in 2015 from the University of Arizona. My interests include leisure culture, recreation, and tourism, especially in the twentieth-century American West. 7 Gregory Carr PhD student [email protected] I am a local St. Louis historian and PhD student in American Studies. My interests are in urban history and Black political activism. I have been studying the life and works of Martin Luther King, Jr. since graduate school and I am very interested in researching his influence on the ecumenical community in St. Louis. King spoke at Temple Israel (now the Missouri History Museum Archives), Christ Church Cathedral, Washington Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, and lastly, at Saint Louis University. His presence in St. Louis ranged from a casual breakfast with a former Morehouse classmate to addressing an interracial audience one day before he was given the Nobel Peace Prize. Honestly, if your student is reading anything and enjoying it, that’s great! The connection between reading and academic success -- both now and on standardized tests, writing, and post secondary learning -- is overwhelming! I recommend (and this is advice I have to take myself!) branching out from one’s favorite genre for variety and to discover additional types of writing to enjoy. Other than recommendations from people you know who have studied or read the works, an easy option for choosing a book is to look up an excerpt of the novel/drama. That way, you know the level of difficulty as well as the author’s style and language. Almost all good literature contains less-than-savory elements -- language, sinful behavior, sometimes even an overt or subtle skewed world view. With that disclaimer comes the fact that most, if not all good literature that I have read doesn’t glorify sin but punishes it in some way. Christian family review sites also exist, including the following: Redeemed Reader, Focus on the Family, Plugged In, and Common Sense Media.     Chopin, Kate, 1851-1904 from Literature Online biography Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an American writer who came to prominence at the fin de siècle with her short stories, many about Louisiana life. She was admired in her lifetime chiefly for her 'charming' depictions of 'local colour', and the work now regarded as her great achievement, the novel The Awakening (1899), was accorded a decidedly mixed reception. Since the late 1960s this novel has come to be regarded as a classic of American literature and is a staple of literature and women's studies university courses, though it is not yet very familiar to general readers. Bearing in mind The Awakening , the story of a woman's sense of oppression in conventional marriage and her burning desire (not uncomplicatedly fulfilled) for liberty, modern critics tend to value most highly those of Chopin's short stories that, in her lifetime, were regarded as distasteful and even unrespectable, dealing with sexuality and the less than fairytale aspects of relationships between the sexes. Chopin was not a campaigning author, for all that she foregrounded socially uncomfortable issues in a way that was considered 'advanced': though some of her characters chafe at conventional expectations, she carefully presented herself as a mother and homemaker, writing only in the interstices of domestic responsibilities; and her treatment of class and race is not always as enlightened as her modern critics would like. Sue Asbee has commented that 'there is a sense in which it is disappointing that such a forward- thinking woman campaigned for nobody's rights'.

Harrison Papers Languages of material English, French, Latin Biographical Note Born April 27, 1883, in Concordia, St. Croix, Danish West Indies, Hubert H. Harrison was a brilliant and influential writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist in Harlem during the early decades of the 20th century. He played unique, signal roles, in what were the largest class radical movement (socialism) and the largest race radical movement (the New Negro/Garvey movement) of his era. Labor and civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph described him as “the father of Harlem radicalism” and historian Joel A. Rogers considered him “the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time” and “one of America’s greatest minds.” Following his December 17, 1927, death due to complications of an appendectomy, Harrison’s important contributions to intellectual and radical thought were much neglected. "Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation.

  • Historic Resource Study of Pullman National Monument
    Chapter 6 EXISTING CONDITIONS The existing conditions and recent alterations in the Town of Pullman and the factory sites have been addressed well in other documents. The Pullman Historic District Reconnaissance Survey completed in 2013 offers clear and succinct assessments of extant buildings in Pullman. Likewise, the Archaeological Overview & Assessment completed in 2017 covers the current conditions of factory remnants. A draft revised National Historic Landmark nomination for Pullman Historic District, completed in August 1997 and on deposit at Pullman National Monument, includes a list of contributing and non-contributing structures.612 For the purposes of this Historic Resources Report, the existing conditions of built environment cultural resources that are not addressed in the aforementioned documents will be considered briefly for their potential significance for research and interpretation. In addition, this section will consider historical documents valuable for studying change over time in the extant built environment and also strategies for using Pullman’s incredibly rich built environment as primary historical evidence. Figure 6.1 offers a visual map showing the approximate age of extant buildings as well as major buildings missing today that were present on the 1892 Rascher Map. Most obvious from this map are the significant changes in the industrial core. Importantly, many of the 1880s buildings that no longer stand were replaced gradually over the twentieth century at first as part of the Pullman Company’s changing technological needs, then after 1959 as part of deindustrialization and the reinvention of the Calumet region. The vast majority of domestic structures from the Town of Pullman’s original construction survive.

Date 1929-2018 (bulk 1936-1942) Extent 290 cubic feet (734 boxes); approximately 29,000 digital files Abstract This collection documents the activities of the Index of American Design, a Federal Art Project to preserve and document the development of American folk and decorative arts from the colonial period through 1900 while providing relief work to unemployed artists, researchers, and photographers during the Great Depression. Materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, lists, data sheets, publications, photograph prints and negatives, color notes. Historical Note Created in 1935, the Index of American Design (Index) was a program in the Fine Arts Divisions of the Federal Art Project (FAP) under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Index project had three objectives: to employ and maintain the skills of artists who found themselves unemployed during the depression years; to preserve America’s artistic and cultural heritage by documenting the development of arts and crafts in different parts of the country; and to create a series of portfolios from the Index watercolor renderings that would serve as a permanent guide for artists, scholars, and the public. The initial idea for the Index project began with discussions between Romana Javitz, head of the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection, and artists who were conducting research in the collection for WPA projects.
