Calumet Area: an Inventory of the Region's Resources, Illinois
THE CALUMET AREA: AN INVENTORY OF THE REGION=S RESOURCES by Ruth Sparks Seeking natural areas in the Calumet area seems, at first, a hopeless task. Several Chicago neighborhoods and southern suburbs are located here, as well as the industries, service providers, and retail establishments that provide employment for thousands of people. With nearly a million people living here, the human population density is more than 4,000 people per square mile. A few natural nooks and crannies still exist, however, some of which contain unexpected treasures. The area is part of the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Region and includes five townships in southern Cook County and a small fraction of Will County. The core of the area is Lake Calumet, but the Calumet Area as defined in this report extends from the Illinois-Indiana border west to just beyond Tinley Park and Burbank and, north to south, from 95th Street in Chicago to Lansing, covering 185 square miles within the watersheds of the Calumet River and the man-made Calumet Sag Channel. Sizeable tributaries include the Little Calumet River and the Grand Calumet River, which drain the eastern portion of the area before joining to form the Calumet River. Stony Creek, in the northwestern part of the area, has a mild slope and gently flowing water. Midlothian Creek and Tinley Creek are located in hillier country south of the Calumet Sag Channel and so have steeper slopes and faster moving water. The Calumet Union Drainage Ditch is a man-made drainage canal which flows into the upper Little Calumet River. -

Harrison Papers Languages of material English, French, Latin Biographical Note Born April 27, 1883, in Concordia, St. Croix, Danish West Indies, Hubert H. Harrison was a brilliant and influential writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist in Harlem during the early decades of the 20th century. He played unique, signal roles, in what were the largest class radical movement (socialism) and the largest race radical movement (the New Negro/Garvey movement) of his era. Labor and civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph described him as “the father of Harlem radicalism” and historian Joel A. Rogers considered him “the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time” and “one of America’s greatest minds.” Following his December 17, 1927, death due to complications of an appendectomy, Harrison’s important contributions to intellectual and radical thought were much neglected. In 1900 Harrison moved to New York City where he worked low-paying jobs, attended high school, and became interested in freethought and socialism. His first of many published letters to the editor appeared in the New York Times in 1903. During his first decade in New York the autodidactic Harrison read and wrote constantly and was active in Black intellectual circles at St. -

cta 2016 Historical Calendar cta 2016 January Chicago Motor Coach Company (CMC) bus #434, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, was part of a fleet of buses operated by the Chicago Motor Coach Company, one of the predecessor transit companies that were eventually assimilated into the Chicago Transit Authority. The CMC originally operated buses exclusively on the various park boulevards in Chicago, and became known by the marketing slogan, “The Boulevard Route.” Later, service was expanded to operate on some regular streets not served by the Chicago Surface Lines, particularly on the fringes of the city. Chicagoans truly wanted a unified transit system, and it was for this reason that the Chicago Transit Authority was established by charter in 1945. The CMC was not one of the initial properties purchased that made up CTA’s inaugural services on October 1, 1947; however, it was bought by CTA in 1952. Calumet Open Space Reserve Plan
Calumet Open Space Reserve Plan 2 Dear Chicagoans: The idea for the Calumet Open Space Reserve was born out of the Calumet Area Land Use Plan, a plan for sustainable development of the land around Lake Calumet on the southeast side of Chicago. In attempting to create a plan that promoted industrial redevelopment while protecting wetlands, the opportunity to create an enormous urban nature preserve emerged. As proposed by the Calumet Area Land Use Plan and as detailed in this document, approximately 4,000 acres of the Calumet area are slated to become part of the Calumet Open Space Reserve. These lands and waters support large populations of herons, egrets and other water birds. Marshes and open lands will eventually be interconnected by hiking and biking trails. The acquisition and management of the first round of properties for the Calumet Open Space Reserve is already being undertaken by a coalition of state and local agencies. Residents and workers in the Calumet area will benefit from daily interaction with nature, and all Chicago residents will be able to enjoy what will become the City’s largest nature reserve. Eventually it will be possible to bike from the Loop to the Reserve on protected trails. Together with the City’s Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District and Planned Manufacturing District (PMD) established in the Calumet area to sustain and develop industry, this plan for the Calumet Open Space Reserve will help bring a bright future to Chicago’s southeast side. They will also have the opportunity to analyze artifacts related to the Black sleeping car porters to gain a better understanding of the men’s daily lives and their contributions to the struggle for labour rights and human rights for Black Canadians. "Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation.
