WELCOME TO MARKHAM As Chair of the Li-Ning BWF World Junior Cham- pionships 2018, I am most honored to welcome Coaches from around the world as each of you gather here in Markham at the 2018 BWF Coaching Conference.

Coaches have the opportunity to teach, influence and inspire our young athletes. We must all continue this learning journey and collaborate in this learning and leading.

Many thanks to the Local Organizing Committee and BWF in putting together a fantastic integrated Coaching Conference. To all the Coaches, take the time to network with as many coaches, players and badminton officials while you are at the conference. BADMINTON CANADA PRESIDENT On behalf of Badminton Canada, I would like to take this time to welcome you to the 2018 BWF Coaching Conference.

As a former player, I know I could not have achieved my goals without great coaches supporting me throughout my career. A coach should be a teacher, a mentor, a counselor and a protector of a player’s health and integrity. Conferences like these do not happen without great effort. I would like to thank Badminton Ontario for their efforts in hosting and to Badminton World Federation, for the honour.

We hope that you enjoy the sessions at the 2018 BWF Coaching Conference and that the information will provide you with the tools and skills to become a better coach! Anil Kaul Anil Kaul, President - Badminton Canada

6 BWF Coaching Conference 2018

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR On behalf of Members of Council and the City of Markham, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the Li-Ning, BWF World Junior Champion- ships 2018 organized by Badminton Ontario and the BWF Coaches Conference.

The city of Markham is a global sports destination, and the Markham Pan Am Centre is a world-class venue that has hosted several sold-out events during the 2015 Pan Am, Para-pan Am Games including badminton. This is only the third time in the history of the sport that Canada has hosted a world badminton championship, in fact the Pan Am Centre was built with badminton in mind.

Badminton is the second most popular sport in the world and the number one par- ticipatory sport in Markham schools, with a strong network of clubs in York Region. Through sport, we celebrate our Canadian identity and our many gifted and ac- complished athletes, many of whom serve as global ambassadors and as role models.

Markham is proud to host this prestigious championships and BWF Coaches Conference and as Mayor, I would like to welcome the coaches to Canada’s most ethnically diverse city. Thank you to the organizers and volunteers for their dedication, their immense contributions and for celebrating your learning.

I hope you all enjoy your time in Markham.

Sincerely,

Frank Scarpitti

THE BWF COACHING PATHWAY Supporting coaches in taking players from grassroots to podium. WHY A COACHING PATHWAY?

Coaches are the key in taking players from grassroots to podium. In order to grow the sport, we need more and better coaches at all levels.

Coaches need different skills and knowledge at different levels of player development. The BWF Coach Education framework aims to address those needs.

At the same time, in order for coaches to be effective, they must also be able to work within national or regional structures.

The coaching pathway looks beyond coaches’ on-court work to examine how this fit into the larger perspective of player development within a national system, thereby helping coaches and players achieve the best possible results.
