Since 1972, when FIU opened its doors as South Florida’s first public university, the university has built a widespread reputation for the excellence of its teaching and research programs. The university has a nationally celebrated faculty, students from throughout the United States and more than 130 foreign countries, and alumni who have risen to prominence in every field. The university takes full advantage of its location in Miami, which serves as a “living laboratory” for many of its programs and offers unparalleled internship and job opportunities. As a major university located in one of the nation’s great cities, FIU offers a rare combination of vast resources, personal attention and affordability. The university offers more than 200 baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and specialist degree programs in 24 colleges and schools: Accounting; Architecture; Architecture and the Arts; Art and Art History; Arts and Sciences; Business Administration; Chapman Graduate School of Business; Computing and Information Sciences; Continuing and Professional Studies; Education; Criminal Justice; Engineering and Computing; Medicine; Honors College; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Journalism and Mass Communication; Law; Music; Nursing and Health Sciences; Public Administration; Social Work, Justice and Public Affairs; Stempel School of Public Health; Theatre, Dance and Speech Communication; and University Graduate School. In March 2006, FIU received approval from the Florida Board of Governors to create a College of Medicine. In establishing South Florida's only public medical school, the university is continuing its tradition of addressing pressing community challenges. The FIU College of Medicine will transform medical education and health care in the region and greatly enhance the university’s research endeavors. FIU has more than 37,000 students, 1,000 full-time faculty, and 115,000 alumni, making it the largest university in South Florida. The university has two campuses — University Park in western Miami-Dade County and the Biscayne Bay Campus in northeast Miami-Dade County — and the FIU Broward-Pines Center, an academic facility in nearby Broward County. The 40-acre Engineering Center, a major research facility, is located near University Park. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Modesto A. Maidique, President Ronald M.
