Thank you for joining us to celebrate fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the media. Tonight, as we recognize outstanding achievements and bold visions, we also take pause to remember the impact of our most powerful tool: our voice. The past year in news, entertainment and online media reminds us that our stories are what continue to drive equality forward. When four states brought marriage equality to the election FROM THE PRESIDENT ballot last year, GLAAD stepped forward to help couples across the nation to share messages of love and commitment that lit the way for landmark victories in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether same- sex couples should receive the same federal protections as straight married couples, and GLAAD is leading the media narrative and reshaping the way Americans view marriage equality. Because of GLAAD’s work, the Boy Scouts of America is closer than ever before to ending its discriminatory ban on gay scouts and leaders. GLAAD is empowering people like Jennifer Tyrrell – an Ohio mom who was ousted as leader of her son’s Cub Scouts pack – to share their stories with top-tier national news outlets, helping Americans understand the harm this ban inflicts on gay youth and families. GLAAD’s Commentator Accountability Project (CAP) is putting critical information about anti- gay activists into the hands of newsrooms, editors, and hosts around the country. Now, more than ever, journalists are challenging the lies and misinformation spread by anti-gay commentators. FROM THE PRESIDENT These are just a few examples of the ways that GLAAD is working to bring LGBT people and issues to the forefront. But there’s still a great deal of work to be done, particularly for the much- underserved transgender community. Now we’re redoubling our efforts, calling for equal treatment of trans youth like Coy Mathis, and holding media like The New York Post accountable for anti-trans bias. With your help, I know that GLAAD can continue growing our impact to benefit GL BT people everywhere. Please join me in congratulating tonight’s nominees, award recipients and honorees, and in helping to ensure GLAAD can continue its work to lead the conversation for LGBT equality. Herndon Graddick President NOMINEE SELECTION PROCESS The GLAAD Media Awards have been held annually since 1990; they recognize and honor news and entertainment media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect our lives. SELECTION PROCESS NOMINEE SELECTION Nominees are selected by juries comprised of volunteers with interest and expertise in the particular media category they are judging. In 2012, over 70 volunteers served on 5 separate Nomination Juries, selecting 120 nominees in 25 English-language categories, and 33 nominees in 8 Spanish-language categories. In addition to year-round media monitoring by the juries, GLAAD issues a Call for Entries, encouraging media outlets to submit outstanding work for consideration. GLAAD may nominate a mainstream media project even if it is not submitted as part of the Call for Entries. However, media outlets created by and for an LGBT audience must submit in order to be considered for nomination. GLAAD does not monitor media created by and for the LGBT community for defamation – therefore we do not generate a pool of potential nominees for juries to review. NOMINEE SELECTION Nominating Juries may select up to five nominees in each category. If no projects are deemed worthy of nomination, the juries may choose to nominate nothing. At the end of the year, the Nominating Juries submit their list of recommended nominees to GLAAD’s staff and Board of Directors for final approval. All media projects with LGBT images are evaluated using four criteria: 1. FAIR, ACCURATE AND INCLUSIVE REPRESENTATIONS Rather than portraying the LGBT community in broad stereotypes, the project deals with the characters or themes in a fair, accurate, and multi-dimensional manner. (This is different than a “positive role model.”) Inclusive means that the diversity of the LGBT community is represented. This includes economic, geographic, and political diversity, as well as people of color, seniors, differently abled people, etc. 2. BOLDNESS AND ORIGINALITY The project breaks new ground by exploring LGBT subject matter in non-traditional ways and handles the LGBT content in a fresh and original manner. Is this project cutting-edge? NOMINEE SELECTION 3. IMPACT The project impacts society in a significant way. Does this project dramatically increase the cultural dialogue about LGBT issues? Or, does this project reach an audience that is not regularly exposed to LGBT images and issues? 4. OVERALL QUALITY A project of extremely high quality adds impact and significance to the images and issues portrayed. Fair, accurate and inclusive images can sometimes be weakened when they are part of a poor-quality project. SELECTION OF AWARD RECIPIENTS Nearly 700 GLAAD Media Awards voters contribute to the selection of award recipients in each category via online balloting. Voters are comprised of three groups: GLAAD staff and board, GLAAD Media Circle members, and GLAAD volunteers & allies (which includes previous Special Honorees, key media industry allies, volunteers from the Nominating Juries, and Event Production teams). NOMINEE SELECTION The votes of these three groups result in a final slate of award recipients, which is then given to GLAAD’s Review Panel for certification. The Review Panel is comprised of the GLAAD Board co-chairs, senior GLAAD program and communications staff, and media industry experts. The members of the Review Panel are expected to view all of the nominees in each category. The final slate of award recipients is certified by the Review Panel, based on the results of the online balloting and their own expert opinions. Award recipients are announced at events held annually in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Photograph by Flickr Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com user minds-eye. CC-BY- SA 2.0. Award-winning television journalist Anderson Cooper has traveled the globe, reporting from war zones and scenes of natural and man-made disasters, as well as covering stories on political and social issues. Cooper is a ubiquitous presence on American television, for in addition to being a news anchor, he also hosts a talk show. Cooper is the son of heiress and designer Gloria Vanderbilt and her fourth husband, Wyatt Cooper. In his memoir, Dispatches from the Edge (2006), Cooper stated that his parents' "backgrounds could not have been more different." Whereas his mother descends from one of American best-known and wealthiest families, his father was born into a poor farm family in the small town of Quitman, Mississippi. When he was sixteen he moved to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans with his mother and five of his seven siblings. Anderson Cooper wrote that his "father fell in love with New Orleans from the start" and delighted in its culture. After graduating from Francis T. Nicholls High School, however, Wyatt Cooper headed to California to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Although he found work on both screen and stage, he eventually turned to screenwriting for Twentieth Century Fox. Wyatt Cooper and Vanderbilt married in 1964 and took up residence in a luxurious mansion in New York City. The couple had two sons, Carter, born in 1965, and Anderson, born on June 3, 1967.

  • How Taking School Demographics Into Account in College Admissions
YALE LAW & POLICY REVIEW Shifting the Scope: How Taking School Demographics Into Account in College Admissions Could Reduce K-12 Segregation Nationwide by Thomas Scott-Railton* Deepening racial and socioeconomic segregation is producing unequal educa- tional outcomes at the K-12 level, outcomes that are then reproduced in higher education. This is particularlytrue as rising competition among colleges has led many of them to focus increasingly on measures of merit that correlate with in- come and as parents and students adjust their behavior in light of those metrics. While existing affirmative action programs at colleges provide some counterweight to this dynamic, they are limited by institutional (and constitutional) constraints. Out of concern for revenue and rankings, many colleges are constrained in the number of students from low-income backgrounds they are willing to admit. Such a limited scope is not inevitable, however. If colleges were to give a substantial admissions bonus to applicants who had attended K-12 schools with at least a certain percentage of low-income students, higher education could become a force for countering inequality at the K-12 level, instead of reproducing it. College admissions policies serve as a crucial reference point for parents, students, and educators on down through K-12. By rewarding applicantsfor attending socioeconomically integrated schools, colleges would mo- bilize the resources of private actors across the country towards integration. The benefits of this would be significant, especiallyfor students from low-income fami- lies who would have an increased chance of attendingintegrated K-12 schools as a result. Such a policy would also help colleges better foster diversity on campuses, as more students would have had priorexperience in integrated settings.

  • A Statement from David France, Director and Producer of the Death and Life of Marsha P
A statement from David France, director and producer of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson In 1992, the year that activist Marsha P. Johnson was killed, I was writing for the Village Voice covering AIDS and the general LGBTQ beat in New York City. Marsha had been a friend of mine, and her story fell to me to report. I started investigating right away, but with no active leads and the exploding AIDS crisis in New York, I let the story slip away. For years, my decision has haunted me. When making my first feature, How To Survive A Plague, I kept a “Projects Board” of other stories I wanted to explore in future work. Marsha’s story was always the most prominent, because I felt a duty to investigate her death the way I had not been able to in 1992. Reina Gossett has suggested that I’ve stolen both the concept and footage for The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson from her work, the experimental short narrative Happy Birthday, Marsha. I owe a debt to those who have kept Marsha’s story alive over the years. My creative work builds on theirs. But it is it’s own scholarship. My research team and I spoke with every friend and associate of Marsha and Sylvia Rivera’s that we could reach, and poured through a vast archive to arrive at our film, aided immeasurably by the Anti Violence Project, whose story is at the center of my film. We sourced, digitized, and licensed the archival footage.

  • FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’S Campaign Against the Media on @Realdonaldtrump and Reactions to It on Twitter
“FAKE NEWS!”: President Trump’s Campaign Against the Media on @realdonaldtrump and Reactions To It on Twitter A PEORIA Project White Paper Michael Cornfield GWU Graduate School of Political Management [email protected] April 10, 2019 This report was made possible by a generous grant from William Madway. SUMMARY: This white paper examines President Trump’s campaign to fan distrust of the news media (Fox News excepted) through his tweeting of the phrase “Fake News (Media).” The report identifies and illustrates eight delegitimation techniques found in the twenty-five most retweeted Trump tweets containing that phrase between January 1, 2017 and August 31, 2018. The report also looks at direct responses and public reactions to those tweets, as found respectively on the comment thread at @realdonaldtrump and in random samples (N = 2500) of US computer-based tweets containing the term on the days in that time period of his most retweeted “Fake News” tweets. Along with the high percentage of retweets built into this search, the sample exhibits techniques and patterns of response which are identified and illustrated. The main findings: ● The term “fake news” emerged in public usage in October 2016 to describe hoaxes, rumors, and false alarms, primarily in connection with the Trump-Clinton presidential contest and its electoral result. ● President-elect Trump adopted the term, intensified it into “Fake News,” and directed it at “Fake News Media” starting in December 2016-January 2017. 1 ● Subsequently, the term has been used on Twitter largely in relation to Trump tweets that deploy it. In other words, “Fake News” rarely appears on Twitter referring to something other than what Trump is tweeting about.

Goodwin: Cuomo's latest weakbid to combat political comrption -... http:l/www.nypost.conVflprinVnews/local/we ainnuying_cuomo-cu... We ain't buying Guomo's rcure' By MICHAEL GOODWIN Last Updated: 3:27 AM, April 10,2013 Posfed; 1 :33 AM, April 10, 2013 lf chicken soup can cure Albany's epidemic of corruption, New Yorkers will be feeling better soon, thanks to the nostrums Gov. Cuomo dished out yesterday. ln a dreary event that smacked of a placeholder for real action, Cuomo summoned a handful of district attorneys to tout changes aimed at making it easier to use state laws to prosecute political corruption. Some penalties would be increased and standards lowered for conviction, moves Cuomo claimed would give prosecutors "the tools they need." Maybe, but it's not legal hurdles that keep DAs from doing corruption cases. They themselves are part of the political system, backed by the party bosses and running with some of the people they should be prosecuting. That's the main reason corruption cases usually fall to federal prosecutors, and the new laws wouldn't change that. Cuomo flicked at that fact in an answer to a reporter's question, just as he flicked at a question about term limits. Neither subject elicited much enthusiasm. Then again, neither did talk of corruption itself light the governor's fire. lf he's lost his famous temper over the explosion of scandals, he's doing a good job of hiding it. Too good for my taste. Where's the passion? Where's the righteous anger at those who have betrayed the public trust? It was missing in action, as it has been for the last week.

  • Patty Schemel on How to Tell Your Life Story
November 6, 2017 - Patty Schemel is an American drummer, songwriter, and comedian best known for her work with the band Hole. She is on the board of the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in California, a non-profit organization that teaches girls all over the world that it's okay to be loud. She continues to perform, teach, and tour, currently with the band Upset, and lives in Los Angeles with her wife and daughter. Here she discusses the process of writing her memoir, Hit So Hard, and the ways that making music has been a source of healing in her life. As told to T. Cole Rachel, 1994 words. Tags: Music, Inspiration, Process, Anxiety, Adversity, Identity. Patty Schemel on how to tell your life story You’ve had a documentary made about your life, and were also asked to write a book about it. The documentary came about because I had a bunch of hi-eight videotapes—tons of stuff from the Hole, Nirvana heyday, stuff from my private life—and a friend said, “You have to digitize that, because it’s going to dissolve.” It had already started to dissolve. At the time my wife worked in film and TV, and she set up a dubbing deck. While we were doing that, one of our friends, David, came over, he’s a director, and he saw some of the footage. Christine was telling him about it and they were like, “You should do something with this.” So that’s how the film started. It was cool because I’m a fan of music docs and I love seeing the archival footage.
