En pleine émergence punk, ils découvriront l’amour, cette planète inconnue et tenteront de résoudre ce mystère : comment parler aux filles en soirée… La production Adapté de la nouvelle de Neil Gaiman, célèbre écrivain et auteur de romans graphiques, l’atmosphère, l’esprit du film et l’époque s’accordent parfaitement avec la passion jubilatoire de Mitchell pour la musique alternative. Mitchell déclare : « En général, j’aime créer mon univers moi-même mais dans ce projet, il y avait quelque chose de spécial. Le film s’inspire de la jeunesse punk de Neil Gaiman à Croydon et, par certains côtés, on a peut-être davantage besoin d’esprit punk maintenant que dans les années 70, à cause de cette impression de noirceur, de dureté, d’accablement qui règne en chacun d’entre nous à l’heure actuelle. » Ce n’est pas uniquement l’esprit punk de l’histoire qui a incité le cinéaste à situer pour la première fois son film à Londres. « C’est aussi une vraie histoire d’amour entre un punk et une extraterrestre, c’est un mélange de cultures et de sous-cultures. Les extraterrestres et les punks sont deux tribus en marge, dans le monde gris et normal du Croydon des années 70. » C’est le producteur associé de Mitchell, Howard Gertler, qui a attiré son attention sur cette histoire. « Je l’ai lue quand elle a été publiée pour la première fois dans “Des Choses Fragiles” de Neil Gaiman et j’en suis immédiatement tombé amoureux. Cela m’a ramené au temps où j’étais moi-même adolescent : l’excitation devant l’inconnu, le fait que la musique qu’on aimait était la chose la plus importante au monde, les mystères du cœur humain (et extraterrestre), tout cela dans un monde où la frontière entre le quotidien et le fantastique était floue », raconte ce producteur qui avait collaboré avec le réalisateur sur « Shortbus ». « J’ai rencontré Neil, il m’a donné sa bénédiction pour trouver un moyen de l’adapter, ensuite John est tombé amoureux de cette histoire. Je lui ai présenté Neil et ça a été une collaboration de rêve. » Gaiman s’est en partie inspiré de sa propre adolescence. « Les aventures d’Enn et de ses amis sont plus ou moins autobiographiques. Dans la nouvelle, le personnage d’Enn tenait un peu de moi. Et ça ressemblait beaucoup à l’endroit que je connaissais et au monde qui était le mien, » précise l’écrivain. « Le titre a été la première chose à trouver. J’ai pensé : “ Je n’ai même pas besoin d’inventer des personnages, ça sera simplement moi et mes amis à Croydon en 1977. Et je prendrai ces moments et je raconterai l’abîme qui sépare les garçons et les filles à cet âge-là – les filles pourraient tout aussi bien être des extraterrestres.” J’ai eu cette idée, je suis allé au fond du jardin et je l’ai écrite en 12 heures. Il m’a fallu encore 12 heures pour l’améliorer et puis je l’ai envoyée – ça a été comme un cadeau magique des dieux. » « Au départ, c’était une nouvelle très courte - qui est en réalité la première scène du film », précise le réalisateur. « J’adorais l’idée de chercher où le punk et la pop se rencontraient. Neil Gaiman a failli signer dans un groupe punk en 1977 et il s’est toujours demandé ce qui aurait pu se passer. C’était une façon de revendiquer une jeunesse punk que je n’ai jamais eue et la célébrité que Neil a presque connue en tant que punk ! » Pour sa part, Gaiman a su immédiatement que John Cameron Mitchell était la personne idéale pour porter cette histoire à l’écran. « John est un génie presque entièrement dissimulé sous le côté plaisant et juvénile de son personnage », dit-il. « On oublie presque qu’il est remarquable tellement sa présence est agréable. Puis, lorsqu’on parle avec lui, on se rend compte à quel point il est brillant et intelligent. » Ses talents sont également évidents pour le producteur Iain Canning : « John a beaucoup de cœur et il n’est pas surprenant qu’une actrice comme Nicole Kidman veuille retravailler avec lui. Il crée une atmosphère très familiale sur le plateau. » Faire le casting du film Pour que l’on croie à cette histoire, le producteur et le réalisateur voulaient deux jeunes acteurs qui seraient à la hauteur des rôles principaux – Zan, l’extraterrestre rebelle attirée par la vie des punks, et Enn, le rocker punk timide qui tombe amoureux d’elle – et qui dégageraient une alchimie intéressante à l’écran. « Zan est une touriste », dit Neil Gaiman. « Elle est là pour découvrir la terre et ce qu’elle voit, c’est Croydon en 1977. Elle veut en voir davantage, elle est frustrée. » Pour le rôle de Zan, ils ne voulaient qu’Elle Fanning, l’une des jeunes stars les plus appréciées aux Etats-Unis. « Zan appartient à la Quatrième Colonie dont la devise est “la Quatrième Colonie soutient l’individualité” » explique Elle Fanning. « Notre Colonie prône le fait d’être unique et la confiance en soi, mais Waldo, le père de la Colonie, est très protecteur et ne nous permet aucune individualité. Zan est très frustrée parce que la Colonie a voyagé dans plein d’endroits différents, là ils sont à Londres, une ville extraordinaire, et elle ne peut rien faire – elle ne peut pas rencontrer les gens du coin, elle n’a pas le droit de danser ni de boire, et puis elle rencontre Enn et elle se rebelle. » Zan vient d’un monde stérile où tout est strictement réglementé – même ce qu’on doit manger – alors quand elle rencontre Enn, elle veut tout savoir sur le monde des punks car Enn la fascine, il porte des vêtements particuliers avec des épingles à nourrice, elle veut faire partie de ce monde et vivre quelque chose de nouveau. Le punk est méchant, brut et excitant ! Incarner une extraterrestre a permis à Elle Fanning d’exprimer sa créativité de plusieurs façons. « Le rôle impliquait beaucoup de chorégraphie parce que les extraterrestres dans le film ont une autre façon de se mouvoir mais il s’agissait aussi d’imaginer sa manière de réagir aux choses terriennes. Zan est fascinée par de tout petits détails, par chacune des petites veines sur le visage d’une personne. Le scénario est à la fois très drôle et très sérieux, profond, donc nous avons passé beaucoup de temps à discuter de la manière dont on devait équilibrer ces différents aspects. » Sa jeunesse a également été un atout puisqu’elle ne connaissait absolument rien au punk et à son explosion en Grande-Bretagne à la fin des années 70. « J’ai réalisé que Zan ne sait absolument pas ce qu’est le punk, alors ça tombait vraiment bien que je n’y connaisse rien non plus. Les garçons en revanche sont devenus les spécialistes – ils ont vu tous les documentaires et lu tous les livres sur le punk - parce qu’il fallait qu’ils sachent de quoi ils parlent pour rendre leurs personnages crédibles. » Pour Elle Fanning, travailler avec John Cameron Mitchell a été une expérience enrichissante. « Quand il m’a montré son book avec les aliens comme il les imaginait, j’ai su que je voulais participer à ce film. Parce qu’il est aussi acteur, il les comprend vraiment et sa façon d’expliquer les choses pour vous plonger dans une scène, c’est presque de la poésie. John comprend que les émotions ne sont pas tranchées et qu’il y a des nuances, alors au lieu de simplement crier “Sois plus heureuse” ou “Sois plus triste”, il expliquait tout. Il nous emmenait à la découverte du personnage et il était là au bon moment pour nous encourager et nous prendre dans ses bras. Et aussi pour qu’on s’amuse : il n’y a pas plus drôle que lui ! » « Elle avait 17 ans quand on a fait ce film, le même âge que le personnage », dit John Cameron Mitchell, « mais bien qu’elle soit si jeune, elle a quelque chose de lumineux qui vous fait du bien et vous donne envie de sourire plutôt que de rester simplement béat d’admiration. Même quand elle s’ennuie ou qu’elle est contrariée, elle est incroyablement positive ! C’est un vrai régal de l’observer - presque toutes les prises étaient fantastiques et légèrement différentes à chaque fois. » Le rôle d’Enn a été attribué à Alex Sharp, qui a eu un Tony award pour son interprétation dans « The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time » (« Le Bizarre Incident du Chien Pendant la Nuit ») « Nous voyons l’histoire à travers les yeux d’Enn » dit John Cameron Mitchell. « C’est un jeune auteur de bandes dessinées, pas complètement intégré. Ce n’est pas un punk pur et dur mais il a quelque chose d’un punk. » Alex Sharp raconte : « J’aime vraiment ce personnage parce que, bien qu’il soit dans l’incertitude de l’adolescence et peu sûr de lui, d’une certaine façon, il sait exactement qui il est et ce qu’il veut.

    A statement from David France, director and producer of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson In 1992, the year that activist Marsha P. Johnson was killed, I was writing for the Village Voice covering AIDS and the general LGBTQ beat in New York City. Marsha had been a friend of mine, and her story fell to me to report. I started investigating right away, but with no active leads and the exploding AIDS crisis in New York, I let the story slip away. For years, my decision has haunted me. When making my first feature, How To Survive A Plague, I kept a “Projects Board” of other stories I wanted to explore in future work. Marsha’s story was always the most prominent, because I felt a duty to investigate her death the way I had not been able to in 1992. Reina Gossett has suggested that I’ve stolen both the concept and footage for The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson from her work, the experimental short narrative Happy Birthday, Marsha. I owe a debt to those who have kept Marsha’s story alive over the years. My creative work builds on theirs. But it is it’s own scholarship. My research team and I spoke with every friend and associate of Marsha and Sylvia Rivera’s that we could reach, and poured through a vast archive to arrive at our film, aided immeasurably by the Anti Violence Project, whose story is at the center of my film. We sourced, digitized, and licensed the archival footage.

    The Bush Revolution: The Remaking of America’s Foreign Policy Ivo H. Daalder and James M. Lindsay The Brookings Institution April 2003 George W. Bush campaigned for the presidency on the promise of a “humble” foreign policy that would avoid his predecessor’s mistake in “overcommitting our military around the world.”1 During his first seven months as president he focused his attention primarily on domestic affairs. That all changed over the succeeding twenty months. The United States waged wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. U.S. troops went to Georgia, the Philippines, and Yemen to help those governments defeat terrorist groups operating on their soil. Rather than cheering American humility, people and governments around the world denounced American arrogance. Critics complained that the motto of the United States had become oderint dum metuant—Let them hate as long as they fear. September 11 explains why foreign policy became the consuming passion of Bush’s presidency. Once commercial jetliners plowed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, it is unimaginable that foreign policy wouldn’t have become the overriding priority of any American president. Still, the terrorist attacks by themselves don’t explain why Bush chose to respond as he did. Few Americans and even fewer foreigners thought in the fall of 2001 that attacks organized by Islamic extremists seeking to restore the caliphate would culminate in a war to overthrow the secular tyrant Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Yet the path from the smoking ruins in New York City and Northern Virginia to the battle of Baghdad was not the case of a White House cynically manipulating a historic catastrophe to carry out a pre-planned agenda.

FILM SUMMARY HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE addresses the pandemic death associated with HIV and AIDS in 1980’s America. Without any explanation or assistance, victims were never offered a real diagnosis. Finding themselves in the midst of a biased and unhelpful community, senators, mayors, even the U.S. President claimed that sufficient action was being taken. Meanwhile, victims went blind and withered away until a group of self-made activists, many who were victims themselves, took matters into their hands to instigate real change. Using amateur videography from a 30-year span, HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE chronicles their trials and successes. When North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms stood before lawmakers and stated, “There is nothing gay about these people, engaging in incredibly offensive and revolting conduct that has led to the proliferation of AIDS,” homophobia and its nasty effects had fatal implications. Hospitals were given incentives not to diagnose AIDS patients, and scientists were not pressed to find a cure. Thus, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and later TAG (Treatment Action Group) were formed, making the impossible possible, demanding more research and drug availability for victims of this horrendously virulent disease. Incredibly moving and thorough, HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE follows brave activists as they tirelessly present their case across the U.S. and Europe. This film presents a living example of the power of political activism, which in this case has arguably saved over 6,000,000 lives.
