They adopted the surname Edwards in the early 16th century. Thomas Edwards (1592-1667) of Cilhendre and Plas Yolyn, was one of the civilian envoys deputed by Thomas Mytton to negotiate the surrender of Anglesey (May- June 1646) and Harlech (March 1647). His fellow envoy was John Jones the Regicide. He also served as governor of Wrexham in 1647. He was the father of Thomas Edwards (d. 1668), who married John Jones's niece, the daughter of Watkin Kyffin, the estate agent of the Chirk Castle estate. His heiress, Julie, married John Morrall. Josiah Morrall of Holywell, surgeon, owner of Plas Yolyn when he died 1745, left debts of £1,400. His widow, Margaret sold the estate to William Challnor of Cilhendre, Dudleston, Shropshire, in 1748. Cilhendre was demolished in 1794. John Jones lived for some years at Bryn y Ffynnon in Wrexham, where Morgan Llwyd had previously resided, and he spent the later years of his life with his cousins, the Edwards family of Cilhendre, to whose estates the Morrall family succeeded in about 1730. The county was contested during the First Civil War of 1642-6 and also saw armed conflict on a smaller scale during the Second Civil War of 1648. This detailed study provides a comprehensive bipartisan analysis of military endeavour, in terms of organisation and of the engagements fought. Drawing on numerous primary sources, it explores: leadership and administration; recruitment and the armed forces; military finance; supply and logistics; and the nature and conduct of the fighting.

The series is reproduced here with the kind permission of Charles Kightly and Anthony Barton. Typographical errors have been corrected and comments on the original articles are shown in bold within square brackets.] Important colour notes for modellers, this month considering Parliamentary infantry, by Charles Kightly and Anthony Barton. During the Civil Wars there were no regimental colours as such, each company of an infantry regiment having its own. A full strength regiment, therefore, might have as many as ten, one each for the colonel's company, lieutenant-colonel's company, major's company, first, second, third captain's company etc. All the standards of the regiment were of the same basic colour, with a system of differencing which followed one of three patterns, as follows. In most cases the colonel's colour was a plain standard in the regimental colour (B1), sometimes with 2 a motto (A1). All the rest, however, had in their top left hand corner a canton with a cross of St. George in red on white; lieutenant-colonels' colours bore this canton and no other device. In the system most commonly followed by both sides (pattern 1) the major's colour had a 'flame' or 'stream blazant' emerging from the bottom right hand corner of the St. George (A3), while the first captain's company bore one device, the second captain's two devices, and so on for as many colours as there were companies.

Victoria County History Shropshire Volume VI, part II Shrewsbury: Institutions, buildings and culture Section 4.2. ‘Ancient chapels’ The following text is an unrevised draft prepared by the late W. A. Champion. It is made available here through the kindness of his executors. © The Executors of W. A. Champion. Not to be reproduced without permission. Please send any corrections or additional information to [email protected]. 1 4.2. Ancient Chapels [W.A. Champion – Final draft, Jan. 2012] Eleven ancient chapels, one parochial, are recorded in Shrewsbury, although in four cases the references are to two chapels re-dedicated in the Middle Ages. The history of St George’s chapel in Frankwell was associated with the adjacent hospital, one of three similar institutions in medieval Shrewsbury whose history has been outlined elsewhere.1 St Catherine’s chapel, Coton. The chapel of St Catherine at Coton, mentioned in 1395,2 was attached to a hermitage, one of three in Shrewsbury’s suburbs, and appears to have been appropriated by the Pride family before 1408.3 Part of the Pride inheritance passed to the Mytton family,4 and in 1521 the heirs of Thomas Mytton paid a rent of 1d. to the borough pro parva capella Sancte Katerine.5 The chapel remained Mytton property until the 19th century.6 The chapel yard, bisected by the Shrewsbury and Chester railway, was marked on the Coton tithe map of 1849,7 indicating that the chapel stood at the junction of the Ellesmere and Baschurch roads. Cadogan’s chapel, Frankwell. In 1332 the harper Jevan Devenald was licenced to grant land in mortmain to a chaplain to celebrate service in the chapel of the Holy Trinity, Kadugenscros, for the soul of the King and his ancestors.8 A Shrewsbury location is not mentioned but the reference may be to Cadogan’s Cross in Frankwell on the Oswestry road (The Mount).

UNIT 3: THEMATIC STUDIES FROM A BROAD HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE 3C. The DevelopmentThe Voyages of Warfare, of Discovery and c.1250 to the present day.Conquest of the Americas, 1492-1522 Causes of war. Have wars always had the same causes over time? Causes of war in general. Overview “Every age had its own kind of war, its limiting conditions and its own peculiar preconceptions.” - Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), Prussian general and military theorist. There can be no single cause of war. The origins of conflict over time have been diverse and complex but they have basic similarities and characteristics. Political, economic, religious, nationalistic and ideological factors have been the causes of war and warfare itself has been shaped by science and technology. Recent research has revealed that there have only been 292 years without war since 3,600 BC. In ancient times nomadic peoples went to war over grazing rights and the prospects of plunder. The Roman Empire was established by warfare and ultimately destroyed by it. Religion was a major cause of war in early times while in the modern era imperialism and commercial rivalry have pushed nations to war. With causes there are consequences. The cost has been over 150 million war- related deaths of which 96% have occurred in the last 400 years. The concept of “Total War” in more recent times, where civilians become targets, has increased the death toll. In the First World War there were 8.4 million military and 1.4 million civilian deaths. In the Second World War there were 16.9 million military and 34.3 million civilian deaths.
