The negotiation of a peace treaty and its successful outcome took the shape of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. The Treaty of Lausanne left an indelible mark in our memory. The aspiration of the Turkish nation to live as a free and independent people is thus anchored in Switzerland, a land that earned the reputation for fairness, equity and justice. The subsequent adoption in 1926 of a Civil Code based on the Swiss example, the Montreux Convention negotiated in 1936 in Switzerland giving full sovereignty on the Turkish Straits and other events have solidified this perception. I am therefore particularly pleased that the roots of the friendship bonds between Turkey and Switzerland and the main events associating Switzerland to Turkey have been compiled in a book. The book also illustrates the reciprocal attention and like minded approaches of both Turkey and Switzerland to further promote bilateral relations between two democracies and to facilitate the realization of aspirations of peace. I would like to express my thanks to the President of the Swiss Confederation, His Excellency Pascal Couchepin and to all who have contributed to the realization of this book. -

Stories and Faces of Holocaust Survivors
e publication of this volume, along with the last three books Memoirs of Holocaust survivors of memoirs, marks the nal important stage of the project. It comes 10 years after Switzerland’s admission to the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance). It is dicult to imagine a more tting anniversary gift. e collection of 15 reports was completed and turned into a graceful edition for the public. e authors have given every- thing they could – whether as members of the Contact Point for emoirs Holocaust of survivors Holocaust Survivors or people who avoided «ocial» mem- M bership – and have all surpassed themselves in contributing to this work. e authors have not tried to produce a work of liter- ature; they have only wanted to give their testimonies. Professor Ivan Lefkovits has been the mainstay of this project UME since it began. e entire board of the Contact Point, as well L as a small number of its members who decided to contribute on VO their own initiative, stand behind the memoir project. OLMA 75. Schweizer Messe für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung St.Gallen, 12. – 22. Oktober 2017 Medientext – Autor: Claudia Schmid Hoher Besuch Die OLMA erfreut sich regelmässig hohen Besuchs. Eingebürgert hat es sich, dass ein Bundesrat oder sogar der Bundspräsident die Eröffnungsrede hält und anschliessend auf dem Messerundgang ein Säuli auf den Arm nimmt. Der traditionelle Stopp im Tierstall mit der Übergabe des Säulis an den Bundesrat ist Jahr für Jahr ein mediales Ereignis, dass fotografisch und filmisch festgehalten wird. Doch nicht nur Bundesräte, sondern auch andere prominente Gäste wie beispielsweise ein Fürst oder ein Ölmagnat hat die OLMA schon erlebt. Bundesräte an der OLMA Bundesrat hält Eröffnungsrede An der ersten OLMA 1943 nahm der St.Galler Bundesrat Karl Kobelt (1940 bis 1954) inkognito teil. Später war die OLMA-Eröffnung für den Bundesrat obligatorisch, bis sie 2014 als Pflichtdate aus der Agenda fiel. Dennoch erscheinen die Bundesräte weiterhin gerne in St.Gallen. Dass die Bundesräte regelmässig die OLMA besuchten, war zweifellos eine grosse Aufwertung. Im Vorfeld wurde oft gerätselt, welcher Bundesrat nun wohl erscheine? Ab 2000 kamen die Bundespräsidenten selbst, ab 2015 waren es wieder Bundesräte. Vom Kino ins Theater Früher hielt der jeweilige Bundesrat seine Ansprache zur OLMA-Eröffnung noch im Kino Scala am am Bohl. Der Apéro fand im alten Restaurant Hecht mit Empore statt. Dann schritt man zur Besichtigung der OLMA-Hallen und traf sich anschliessend zum Essen im Kongresshaus Schützengarten. Später war die Eröffnung mit Ansprachen im Theater St.Gallen (damals Stadttheater). Heute wird ein Bankett in der Halle 9 offeriert. Diese Festivität ist heiss begehrt und beliebt. -

100 years of the Marcel Benoist Swiss Science Prize Bern, September 2020 1 Introduction The Marcel Benoist Swiss Science Prize has been awarded annually since 1920. It is named after its founder, the Frenchman Marcel Benoist. Born in 1864, he practised law and lived mainly in Lausanne from 1914 until his death in 1918. Benoist bequeathed most of his wealth to the Swiss Confederation on condition that it would be used to award an annual prize to a Swiss scholar or a scholar resident in Switzerland. In line with the founder's wish, the decisive criteria for the awarding of the Prize are scientific excellence and usefulness of the work to society. The Prize is open to all disciplines. The laureates are internationally renowned scientists, 11 of whom have gone on to win a Nobel Prize. The Prize is awarded by the Marcel Benoist Foundation, which was founded in 1920. The Foundation's Board of Trustees includes a representative of each of Switzerland's universities. The Foundation is privately funded. It is chaired by the head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER. This brochure has been compiled to mark the centenary of the Marcel Benoist Swiss Science Prize. It shows the thinking and objectives behind the establishment of the Prize and the Foundation in 1920, how they have evolved, and how the founder's legacy continues to be implemented today. It is intended as a general overview and is by no means exhaustive. 1. The founder – the Prize – the Foundation Who was Marcel Benoist? Very little is known about the man himself as he kept a low public profile and left no personal documents behind, such as letters, a diary or memoirs.
