Press Release
Press release TRENITALIA, THE STEPS TAKEN TOWARDS INTEGRATED, SHARED AND SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY Rome, 12 June 2020 Train, bicycle or scooter – for mobility that is increasingly integrated, safe and sustainable. Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group), through its summer 2020 timetable that starts on Sunday 14 June, is strengthening the integration of the train with various forms of transport to ensure the development of sustainable tourism and urban mobility. This will enable people who take the train for longer trips to use bicycles, electric scooters and other ecological means of getting around for the first and last miles, to and from stations. There is no charge for tickets for carrying bicycles, foldable scooters (both electric and otherwise), hoverboards and monowheels on regional trains. The maximum size permitted has also been increased, to include the largest bikes on the market. The new Rock and Pop regional trains will also have more room set aside for two-wheeled vehicles and recharging electrically-powered two-wheelers. There is also room for bicycles on InterCity trains. With the new summer timetable, Trenitalia is also launching its partnership with Helbiz, a micro-mobility company that was the first in Italy to start sharing services and technology for scooters and electric bikes in Turin, Milan, Verona and Rome. Trenitalia passengers who register on the Helbiz app and insert the code TRENITALIA in the codice Promozionale section (“promotional code) of the Pagamento area (“payment”) will receive a welcome bonus of two free trips, each of twenty minutes in total, including the unlocking of the vehicle. Before long there will be other discounts available to Trenitalia clients. -

European Train Names: a Historic Outline Christian Weyers
ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively. -

It is a time of anniversaries: the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, and the 25th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty Eand the beginnings of Interreg. And above all it is the time for new visions to invent the post-2020 Europe: a Europe which is facing unprecedented challenges, but regaining the trust of its peoples. The MOT is celebrating 20 years of existence: an occasion for its network and technical team to take stock and think about the future of its activities, and more broadly of cross-border cooperation in Europe. The brochure published on this occasion presents the achievements of its members and partners by way of 20 experiences aimed at serving the inhabitants of cross-border territories (Part 1); the obstacles that have been overcome or that still pose a problem, and the toolkit developed to overcome them (Part 2); and lastly, the current challenges for Europe and its cross-border territories, and the political responses at the different levels of territorial action: local and regional, national, European and beyond (Part 3). Most of the examples come from Western Europe, This brochure is the result of a collective work by all members of the MOT network and its technical team, managed by the where the MOT and its network act on a daily basis; working group “20 years of the MOT: outcome and perspectives for post-2020”, under the direction of Jean Peyrony, director general and Olivier Denert, secretary general, and coordinated by Silvia Gobert-Keckeis, policy manager European policies and MOT association, but the diversity of the borders discussed makes Alexandre Martin and Marie Dreffier, interns, and Blandine Lysensoone, policy manager for communication and documentation.
