On July 9, 1997, the University of North Carolina and Nike signed a five-year, $7.1 million contract under which Nike will provide shoes, apparel, equipment bags and other products for each varsity team. UNC also received $400,000 for the Chancellor’s Academic Enhancement Fund.

Tar Heels Welcome New Chancellor

On October 12, 2000, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill installed James Moeser as its new chancellor. Moeser comes to Chapel Hill from the University of Nebraska where he acted as chancellor since 1996. Moeser is a native of Colorado City, Texas and received a bachelor’s of music degree with honors in 1961 and a master’s of music in musicology in 1964 from the University of Texas at Austin. Moeser later received a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Michigan in 1967. A concert organist, Moeser is the right person to lead Carolina at this impor- tant time says Anne Cates, chair of the UNC-CH Board of Trustees. "He has precise- ly the kind of outstanding track record that is so important to all of us now," says Cates. "He also has exciting ideas about Carolina’s future and deep respect for the students, faculty and staff who make this university the great place it is."
