It provides a support service to a maximum of eight older people. The provider is East Ayrshire Council. The service is located within the Townhouse in Stewarton. The service operates from Monday to Thursday 9.30am - 4.30pm and Friday from 9.00am - 4.00pm. The service is provided to older people living within or in the vicinity of Stewarton, Dunlop, Lugton, Kilmaurs and Fenwick. To help retain independence people are encouraged to arrange their own transport to and from the service and where this is not possible transport is provided. The stated aim of the service is "to provide a high quality day service for older people, which is accessible and meets people's needs." At the time of inspection 25 people were registered to use this service. What people told us We received the views of 21 people. 14 people gave their views through care standards questionnaires and we spoke to seven people attending the day service. People told us that they were very happy with the quality of care and support that this service provided. Comments included: "I am perfectly happy with the service and the staff who could not be anymore helpful. I am very glad that I can come here and meet other people. Everyone is so cheery and I would miss it very much". "This is an invaluable service to its users and carers. The staff are wonderful - 5 star. They are polite, helpful and most respectful. They treat us as valuable individuals not as elderly people. This service also gives great support to carers. I enjoy my time at day care always. It is undoubtably the highlight of my week. Enjoying a laugh and company always puts a smile on my face. It helps keep me independent. I would whole heartedly give this service 5 stars". "X looks forward to going and enjoys their time there. The keyworker reviews the care plan regularly and they also hold meetings with all service users to discuss future plans". "X thoroughly enjoys this experience. This is in no small way thanks to the excellent members of staff. X feels very much at ease. I have also appreciated the help and support that I have received from the staff". "As the main carer I fully appreciate the time x spends at Stewarton. The staff including the bus driver are exceptionally caring and could not be more helpful. X enjoys time there and I certainly appreciate the respite and time to myself". "Completely satisfied with the carers and the service as a whole". Self assessment We received a fully completed self-assessment from the provider. The provider identified what it thought the service did well and gave examples of improvements in participation and introduction of tools to provide improved information for staff about peoples needs., interests, preferences, Inspection report for Stewarton Day Care page 2 of 5 Inspection report likes and dislikes. The self-assessment identified some key areas that the provider believed could be improved and how the service intended to do this. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support 5 - Very Good Quality of environment not assessed Quality of staffing 5 - Very Good Quality of management and leadership not assessed What the service does well The service was good at involving people in planning and evaluating the service provided. The environment was warm, clean and bright and included access to a safe outdoor space. Personal planning contained some good information including a one page profile which enabled staff get to know the person, what was important to them and how they wanted to be supported. A varied programme of activities was available which offered the opportunity to maintain independence and develop skills. Staff had good relationships with service users and carers and worked well together to ensure good outcomes for people. What the service could do better The service should review and update information within the service brochure. Personal planning should continue to be developed. To keep people safe the service should review the management of key safe codes. Medication arrangements should be reviewed to ensure that they are consistent with the organisations policy/ procedures and best practice guidance. See recommendation 1. Reflection was being used to enable staff to develop their practice and support good outcomes for people using the service. This is good practice and should continue to be developed. The service should promote awareness of the revised Scottish Social Services Council Codes of Practice and new national care standards.
