Contrastive Phonology Chapter 2 Contrastive Phonology Kurtöp phonology has been described in depth in several publications, first in Michailovsky & Mazaudon (1994) and then later in more detail in Hyslop (2006, 2008b, 2009). The current discussion on phonology summarizes these previous findings and includes an updated analysis. The data presented in this chapter is in IPA while the following chapters use the practical orthography (described in §2.6). The organization of this chapter is as follows: §2.1 presents the consonantal phonemes, beginning with the obstruents and then discussing sonorants; §2.2 shows the distribution of consonants in complex onsets; while §2.3 discusses their distribution as codas. §2.4 discusses vowels and §2.5 discuss supraseg- mental features, namely tone and vowel length. The final section, §2.6, intro- duces the practical orthography, which will be used from chapter 3 on. 2.1 Consonant Phonemes Kurtöp contrasts fifteen stops, three fricatives, two affricates, two laterals, one rhotic, four nasals, two glides and a glottal aspirate, shown in Table 21. A sub- set of the Kurtöp consonant phonemes may be combined to make complex onsets; these are illustrated in Figure 9. See §2.6.2. © koninklijke brill nv, leiden, ���7 | doi ��.��63/97890043�8747_003 Contrastive Phonology 31 Labial Dental Retroflex Palatal Velar Glottal rhotics r glides w j 2.1.1 Obstruents Kurtöp stops make a three-way VOT (voiceless unaspirated, voiceless aspirated, voiced) contrast at five places of articulation, as shown in Table 2. There is a two-way VOT contrast amongst the affricates (aspirated and unaspirated) and the dental fricatives (voiced and voiceless), while the palatal fricative occurs only voiceless synchronically (see §2.5.1 for a description of a recent histori- cal sound change which has collapsed a previous voiced/voiceless distinction). With the exception of the voiceless palatal fricative, which can co-occur with both high and low tone, I am treating the pitch on the vowel following the obstruents as part of the voicing contrast. 2.1.1.1 Stops The contrast between the stops is illustrated by the near-minimal set in Table 32. As described in §2.5.1, tone in Kurtöp is phonemically contrastive on initial syllables following sonorant onsets. Following most (all except the palatal fricative) obstruents, pitch is predictably high if the onset is voiceless and low if the onset is voiced; in other words, I treat the “voicing” contrast as a bundle of acoustic features, involving, minimally, voice onset time and pitch on the fol- lowing vowel. Other than different pitch, one may also note that in some cases a long vowel or vowel plus coda is contrasted with a short vowel. Despite these differences, the data suffice to show the contrast made between the different stop types..

    An articulatory theory of sound change An articulatory theory of sound change Hypothesis: Most common initial motivation for sound change is the automation of production. Tokens reduced online, are perceived as reduced and represented in the exemplar cluster as reduced. Therefore we expect sound changes to reflect a decrease in gestural magnitude and an increase in gestural overlap. What are some ways to test the articulatory model? The theory makes predictions about what is a possible sound change. These predictions could be tested on a cross-linguistic database. Sound changes that take place in the languages of the world are very similar (Blevins 2004, Bateman 2000, Hajek 1997, Greenberg et al. 1978). We should consider both common and rare changes and try to explain both. Common and rare changes might have different characteristics. Among the properties we could look for are types of phonetic motivation, types of lexical diffusion, gradualness, conditioning environment and resulting segments. Common vs. rare sound change? We need a database that allows us to test hypotheses concerning what types of changes are common and what types are not. A database of sound changes? Most sound changes have occurred in undocumented periods so that we have no record of them. Even in cases with written records, the phonetic interpretation may be unclear. Only a small number of languages have historic records. So any sample of known sound changes would be biased towards those languages. A database of sound changes? Sound changes are known only for some languages of the world: Languages with written histories. Sound changes can be reconstructed by comparing related languages.

Kuhl Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences, University of Washington, USA ͑Received 19 September 2005; revised 25 July 2006; accepted 26 July 2006͒ Previous studies have shown improved sensitivity to native-language contrasts and reduced sensitivity to non-native phonetic contrasts when comparing 6–8 and 10–12-month-old infants. This developmental pattern is interpreted as reflecting the onset of language-specific processing around the first birthday. However, generalization of this finding is limited by the fact that studies have yielded inconsistent results and that insufficient numbers of phonetic contrasts have been tested developmentally; this is especially true for native-language phonetic contrasts. Three experiments assessed the effects of language experience on affricate-fricative contrasts in a cross-language study of English and Mandarin adults and infants. Experiment 1 showed that English-speaking adults score lower than Mandarin-speaking adults on Mandarin alveolo-palatal affricate-fricative discrimination. Experiment 2 examined developmental change in the discrimination of this contrast in English- and Mandarin-leaning infants between 6 and 12 months of age. The results demonstrated that native-language performance significantly improved with age while performance on the non-native contrast decreased. Experiment 3 replicated the perceptual improvement for a native contrast: 6–8 and 10–12-month-old English-learning infants showed a performance increase at the older age.

    LIN 3201 Sounds of Human Language Manual By Ratree Wayland Program in Linguistics University of Florida Gainesville, FL 2 Introduction There are approximately 7,000 languages in the world, and the sounds employed by these languages show both similarities and differences. Thus, an interesting question that one might ask is, “What factors affect the sounds a language can or cannot use?” First of all, we are constrained by what we can do with our tongue, our lips and other organs involved in the production of speech sounds. This factor may be referred to as the ‘articulatory ease’ factor. Secondly, we are constrained by what we can hear or what we can perceptually distinguish. This is the ‘auditory distinctiveness’ factor. Thus, no language in the world has sounds that are too difficult for native speakers to produce or to perceptually differentiate. To nonnative speakers, however, certain sounds may prove challenging to both produce and perceive. One of the goals of this course is to familiarize students with the various sounds employed in the world’s languages. Students will learn how to describe, produce and perceptually distinguish these sounds. Describing Speech Sounds Phonetics is concerned with describing speech sounds that occur in the world’s languages. Speech sounds can be described in at least two different ways. First we can describe them in terms of how they are made in the vocal tract (articulatory phonetics). As speech sounds leave the mouth, they cause disturbances in the surrounding air (sound waves). Thus, another way that we can describe speech sound is to analyze its acoustic sound wave (acoustic 3 phonetics).
