2 FILM IN THE SCENIC CITY: OWEN SOUND & AREA | OWENSOUNDTOURISM.CA WILD LANDS FILM FESTIVAL: ACCOLADES

Owen Sound launched its first annual Wild Lands Film Festival in October, 2014, showcasing the talents of local filmmakers. Canadian media critic Geoff Pevere had this to say about the Owen Sound film industry:

“Owen Sound’s first annual Wild Lands Film Festival, held over a weekend last October, couldn’t have kicked off more aptly than it did. There is an aspect ofthe local experience that is at once depicted, celebrated and quietly put to task...People who had come to this gorgeous but industrially past-prime Ontario town to be nearer to nature, freer to be themselves and away from the things that otherwise distract us from imagining. These days, Owen Sound may have an unused rail station, a virtually unused bus depot and a lot of buildings that are no longer what they used to be, but it also has a surplus of artists, artisans, filmmakers, musicians and yes, people whom you can go to get your suit of medieval armour made. Dreams seem to be thriving there, and I have a very strong feeling we haven’t seen the last of them.”

Year built: 1920 102645 Grey Rd 18, , N4K 5N6 (519) 376-4617

Built by the McCallum family in 1920, Moreland Place was originally a small, country cottage-style home. The expansion at the rear was modeled on the 1870s Regency Georgian Villa style. The gardens, which contain concrete statues and benches, are in the European “architectural” style. One could get lost in the gardens, literally; with tunnels and terraces, hidden vignettes and other secret places, you wander, you back track, you come across an open area of wild flowers, and then Morland Exterior you waltz right back under a cedar arch. It’s a mansion that has hosted many photo shoots, weddings and films.

The inner harbour is an expansive stretch with parkland, paved trails and a historic railway station, now used as a visitor centre and marine & rail museum. A CN caboose rests on the train tracks that remain and a tug sits near the water. This area is the winter home for the Chi-Cheemaun ferry. Further out in the bay is a grain elevator and also cement silos, both fully operational. Parking is plentiful with dedicated lots to the north and south of the Visitor Information Centre that can hold about 60 vehicles.
