Disclaimer Editorial Newsletter no 2 February 2014 Esterházy Crest Pallavicini Crest The first 18 months of operation for the ALR Inc. has been very busy indeed! On the 3rd of November our first AGM was well attended by fourteen members, with three from New Zealand at the property of Wayne and Amanda Klaassen. At the meeting the proposals for alterations to the Rules and Regulations and the Constitution were voted in. This was the capping of a very successful year in which we saw the movement towards evaluation rather than accreditation of all stock including off spring, thereby widening the requirement of inspection of all Lipizzaners as breeding horses. Our first major show for the year was the Andalusian Horse Association of Australia South Australian State Championship show held on Sunday the 24th of November. In all seven Lipizzaners were exhibited from a total of nine entries. This proved to be a very successful day for all our competitors and congratulations go to Wayne and Amanda Klaassen on their stallion Favory Marta taking out the Supreme Champion Baroque Exhibit of the show. Many thanks go to the AHAA for putting on the Lipizzaner classes and special thanks to Baroque Horse Magazine for sponsoring the day. A picture of Favory Marta can also be seen in the January issue of Baroque Horse Magazine and photos of all the other horses taking part at the show can be viewed in this newsletter. Our next show outing will be early next year at the Murray Bridge All Breeds Show. We trust that the ALR Inc. newsletter is enjoyable reading for all of our Lipizzaner members, friends, breeders and overseas owners and enthusiasts. Thank you to everyone near and far who has given us very positive feedback on the website, newsletter and Facebook. Over time the newsletter team would like to bring readers interesting stories of rarely known or covered facts about the Lipizzaner horse. We will also seek permission from overseas Lipizzaner connections to reprint earlier stories that may be of particular interest. In this issue ALR Inc. will commence a regular feature on the lives and stud farms of the aristocratic families that contributed to both male and female lines of the Piber “Stud Book of Origin”. This is a topic that appears not to have been covered in the way we hope to do so. The wealth of some of the families to be mentioned was sometimes so great that the land holdings were far more extensive than that of the Emperor himself. One family; that of the Esterhazy had some 34 palaces and castles and was once described as the wealthiest person ever to have existed on the planet having never been a King with a throne! Ground training using natural horsemanship techniques is very topical these days. Readers are invited to look at the YouTube clip of Mr John “Paddy” Mair from New Zealand with his yearling Lipizzaner colt Conversano Bekescaba. Please find this attached to the New Zealand page. A lot to be said about ground training and the rapport that can be developed between horse and handler. The video clip shows the colt after only eight days of the Buck Brannagan method of education. Paddy is quite an exponent in this method of training; having competed in North America on a regular basis. He holds regular clinics in New Zealand for youth and adults in this art and he is a great believer in the use of similar ground training before any other education under saddle. The clip is a “must see” and we are sure you will get a laugh from some of the colts antics. Included is our first “Foal Crop” page with photos of the stock by 224 Conversano Allegra V (Slovenia) and 3518 Conversano Juliana III (USA) Many thanks go to all over members for a very industrious effort this year. It has all been very worthwhile to see the results of the hard work and the membership certainly has a very broad pool of talent in many areas from which to draw from! Our membership expands on a monthly basis and it is wonderful to see people keen to support the breed and to have a future ambition to breed purebred Lipizzaners. The membership of the ALR Inc. looks forward to 2104 with great enthusiasm! By 1622 Esterházy the family had taken possession of this magnificent castle. The family was so wealthy that the composer Joseph Haydn was in their employ for nearly forty years. This was in the late 1700,s and Haydnsaal was named after the famous composer. Originally it was a large multi-purpose, festival and banquet room and is a piece of artwork in itself. With its size and ornate splendor, it reflects the political, economic and cultural dominance of the Esterházy family. Today it ranks among the most beautiful and acoustically perfect concert halls of the world. Many of Joseph Haydn’s works composed and premiered in Eisenstadt and the Schloss Esterházy. The wealth came from their extensive landholdings, mostly in Hungary. In 1848 the American author John Stevens Cabot Abbott wrote the following of him: (Quotation not in full, excerpt taken from the original) Prince Esterházy in 1830: Prince Esterhazy, a Hungarian baron, is probably the richest man, who is not seated on a throne, in the world. He lives in the highest style of earthly grandeur. One of his four magnificent palaces contains three hundred and sixty rooms for guests, and a theater. His estates embrace one hundred and thirty villages, forty towns, and thirty-four castles. By the old feudal law, still undisturbed, he possesses unlimited power over his vassals........ He has quite a little band of troops in his pay, and moves with military pomp and gorgeous retinue from palace to palace. The Prince's wealth came partly from the great number of peasants who owed him a portion of the fruits of the labours. He also had his own enterprises, directed by his staff, notably sheep raising. Of his enormous flock, Abbott relates: Not long ago he visited England, and was a guest of the Lord of Holkham, one of the wealthiest proprietors of that island. While looking upon a very beautiful flock of two thousand sheep, the Lord of Holkham inquired if Esterhazy could show as fine a flock upon his estates. The wealthy baron smilingly replied, “My shepherds are more numerous than your sheep." This was literally true, for Esterhazy has two thousand five hundred shepherds. The Esterhazy Estates were released from curators in 1898. During this period, Prince Nikolaus III was forced to sell the family's collection of paintings to the Kingdom of Hungary. • List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below.

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. Investigation into the influence of yearling sale production parameters on the future career longevity and success of New Zealand thoroughbred race horses A thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters of Science in Agricultural Science (equine) at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Kristi Louise Waldron 2011 Abstract Few studies have investigated the influence of yearling sale production parameters on racing performance of Thoroughbred horses. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of yearling sales parameters, in particular dam (mare) age at the time of conception, on future career success and longevity in a population of Thoroughbred racehorses in New Zealand. A retrospective cohort study was used to investigate racing success and longevity in a population of Thoroughbred horses in New Zealand, over eight and a half racing seasons. Retrospective records of the 2002 born Thoroughbred foals in New Zealand were obtained from the New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) online database and the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) database. Logistic regression models using the binary outcomes trial, race and prize money earned were analysed with exposure variables. Cox regression survival analysis was used to investigate the association between the number of race starts and the time to cessation of racing. Linear regression was preformed to assess the effect of exposure variables with the outcome measure prize money earned (ln, $NZ).

  • Crossbreeding the Andalusian Horse in Short
Crossbreeding the Andalusian Horse By Sarah Gately-Wilson The Andalusian horse is growing in popularity and its future is full of endless possibilities. The purebred Andalusian is highly versatile and capable of being successful in any discipline; however, with just over 10,000 registered purebreds in the U.S. these horses are still very rare and not easy to acquire. To fill the growing demand for the qualities the Andalusians possess many breeders are turning to crossbreeding. Some of the crosses have been bred long enough to establish breeds in their own right and some are just getting started. A few acknowledged crosses include the Iberian Warmblood, the Azteca (AQHA), the Spanish-Norman (Percheron), the Warlander (Friesian), and the Hispano-Arabe. When looking for an Andalusian to breed, whether to another Andalusian or to an outside breed, you should look for one with a good-looking head set on an arching neck, a broad forehead, well-placed ears, and almond shaped eyes that are alive and kind. The Andalusian should have an abundant tail, set low and hung tightly against the body; the mane as well should be thick. It should have well-defined withers preceding a short back and broad strong hindquarters. When Spain claimed the New World, the Spanish horse was there to help. On his second voyage in 1493, Christopher Columbus brought the Andalusian horse to the Americas. Every subsequent expedition also contained Andalusians in its Cargo. Breeding farms were established in the Caribbean to provide mounts for the Conquistadors as they explored and settled the New World.

Laliotis, Meni Avdi Laboratory of Physiology of Reproduction of Farm Animals, Department of Animal Production, School of Agriculture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece. Corresponding author: G.P.Laliotis; [email protected] Original scientific paper Abstract: Highly endangered local breeds are considered important not only for the maintenance of their genetic diversity for future survival but also because they regarded as part of the cultural heritage of the local and national communities. Using pedigree data and an analysis of 18 microsatellite loci we investigated the genetic diversity of a private (commercial) indigenous Skyros horse population, reared in an insular region of North-Western of Greece. The overall average animal inbreeding value reached 24%. Concerning average inbreeding value over non founding animals, it was estimated to 0.013, while the corresponding value over inbred animals were 0.13.The mean number of alleles per locus amounted to 3.72, ranging between 1 and 7 alleles. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.57. Taking into account the inbreeding estimated index, an average heterozygote deficit (Fis) of -0.09 was noted (P<0.05). Although the population maintained reasonable levels of genetic diversity, well studied inbreeding strategies should be implemented, in order to reduce the loss of genetic variability, to avoid extinction and further genetic drift of the population. Keywords: Skyros Horse, Inbreeding, Conservation, STRs, genetic markers.
