Editorial Newsletter no 2 February 2014 Esterházy Crest Pallavicini Crest

The first 18 months of operation for the ALR Inc. has been very busy indeed! On the 3rd of November our first AGM was well attended by fourteen members, with three from New Zealand at the property of Wayne and Amanda Klaassen. At the meeting the proposals for alterations to the Rules and Regulations and the Constitution were voted in. This was the capping of a very successful year in which we saw the movement towards evaluation rather than accreditation of all stock including off spring, thereby widening the requirement of inspection of all Lipizzaners as breeding .

Our first major show for the year was the Andalusian Association of Australia South Australian State Championship show held on Sunday the 24th of November. In all seven Lipizzaners were exhibited from a total of nine entries. This proved to be a very successful day for all our competitors and congratulations go to Wayne and Amanda Klaassen on their Favory Marta taking out the Supreme Champion Baroque Exhibit of the show. Many thanks go to the AHAA for putting on the Lipizzaner classes and special thanks to Magazine for sponsoring the day. A picture of Favory Marta can also be seen in the January issue of Baroque Horse Magazine and photos of all the other horses taking part at the show can be viewed in this newsletter. Our next show outing will be early next year at the Murray Bridge All Breeds Show.

We trust that the ALR Inc. newsletter is enjoyable reading for all of our Lipizzaner members, friends, breeders and overseas owners and enthusiasts. Thank you to everyone near and far who has given us very positive feedback on the website, newsletter and Facebook. Over time the newsletter team would like to bring readers interesting stories of rarely known or covered facts about the Lipizzaner horse. We will also seek permission from overseas Lipizzaner connections to reprint earlier stories that may be of particular interest. In this issue ALR Inc. will commence a regular feature on the lives and stud farms of the aristocratic families that contributed to both male and female lines of the Piber “Stud Book of Origin”. This is a topic that appears not to have been covered in the way we hope to do so. The wealth of some of the families to be mentioned was sometimes so great that the land holdings were far more extensive than that of the Emperor himself. One family; that of the Esterhazy had some 34 palaces and castles and was once described as the wealthiest person ever to have existed on the planet having never been a King with a throne!

Ground training using natural horsemanship techniques is very topical these days. Readers are invited to look at the YouTube clip of Mr John “Paddy” Mair from New Zealand with his yearling Lipizzaner Conversano Bekescaba. Please find this attached to the New Zealand page. A lot to be said about ground training and the rapport that can be developed between horse and handler. The video clip shows the colt after only eight days of the Buck Brannagan method of education. Paddy is quite an exponent in this method of training; having competed in North America on a regular basis. He holds regular clinics in New Zealand for youth and adults in this art and he is a great believer in the use of similar ground training before any other education under saddle. The clip is a “must see” and we are sure you will get a laugh from some of the colts antics.

Included is our first “Foal Crop” page with photos of the stock by 224 Conversano Allegra V (Slovenia) and 3518 Conversano Juliana III (USA)

Many thanks go to all over members for a very industrious effort this year. It has all been very worthwhile to see the results of the hard work and the membership certainly has a very broad pool of talent in many areas from which to draw from! Our membership expands on a monthly basis and it is wonderful to see people keen to support the breed and to have a future ambition to breed Lipizzaners. The membership of the ALR Inc. looks forward to 2104 with great enthusiasm!

Schloss Esterházy: In 1364 The palace came into the possession of the powerful Kanizsai family. By 1622 Esterházy the family had taken possession of this magnificent castle. The family was so wealthy that the composer Joseph Haydn was in their employ for nearly forty years. This was in the late 1700,s and Haydnsaal was named after the famous composer. Originally it was a large multi-purpose, festival and banquet room and is a piece of artwork in itself. With its size and ornate splendor, it reflects the political, economic and cultural dominance of the Esterházy family. Today it ranks among the most beautiful and acoustically perfect concert halls of the world. Many of Joseph Haydn’s works composed and premiered in Eisenstadt and the Schloss Esterházy.

Esterházy Family History since the baroque period

For several generations, the Esterházy family had been exceedingly wealthy. The wealth came from their extensive landholdings, mostly in Hungary. In 1848 the American author John Stevens Cabot Abbott wrote the following of him: (Quotation not in full, excerpt taken from the original)

Prince Esterházy in 1830: Prince Esterhazy, a Hungarian baron, is probably the richest man, who is not seated on a throne, in the world. He lives in the highest style of earthly grandeur. One of his four magnificent palaces contains three hundred and sixty rooms for guests, and a theater. His estates embrace one hundred and thirty villages, forty towns, and thirty-four castles. By the old feudal law, still undisturbed, he possesses unlimited power over his vassals...... He has quite a little band of troops in his pay, and moves with military pomp and gorgeous retinue from palace to palace.

The Prince's wealth came partly from the great number of peasants who owed him a portion of the fruits of the labours. He also had his own enterprises, directed by his staff, notably sheep raising. Of his enormous flock, Abbott relates:

Not long ago he visited , and was a guest of the Lord of Holkham, one of the wealthiest proprietors of that island. While looking upon a very beautiful flock of two thousand sheep, the Lord of Holkham inquired if Esterhazy could show as fine a flock upon his estates. The wealthy baron smilingly replied, “My shepherds are more numerous than your sheep." This was literally true, for Esterhazy has two thousand five hundred shepherds. Source Wikipedia free

The Esterhazy Estates were released from curators in 1898.

During this period, Prince Nikolaus III was forced to sell the family's collection of paintings to the Kingdom of Hungary. These paintings constitute the core of the collection of the present- day Museum of Fine Arts (Budapest). Esterházy family information wikiedia

Three main families have been involved in the history of the castle: the Keglevich, the Erdődy and the Pallavicini family. The Count Keglevich family were awarded with feudality the valuable lordship of Warad in 1666 and owned the castle until 1894, for almost 230 years.

For a short time the Erdődy family occupied the Castle, and later on the Pallavicini family became the owner.

The Pallavicini family renewed the Castle in a neobaroque style and they owned the Castle until 1944. Margrave Alfonz Charles Pallavicini dealt with his lands very carefully, and presided over everything. He loved the woods the most and his favourite was the woods of Szilvásvárad- Nagyvisnyó where they spent the most of the year, especially the hot months of the summer because of its excellent climate. The New Zealand Report

238 Favory Tural – “George”

Hi from Lisa Spencer-Tomkins in Auckland New Zealand - Owner and Director of A Plus Lipizzaner Stud.

I just had to share the above picture - another head shot, this time of Favory Tural "George" taken on one of our Monday morning training sessions with his Trainer Mel Cooper-Levin, Grand Prix Trainer and Rider here in NZ.

That sneaky look in his eye give's a clear indication of what we are thinking of doing next. A very good flying change when requested …. “I am a very smart boy” and thanks to "Paddy" John Mair and his fantastic help, he is very quick to learn. Mel says "she always looks forward to our morning training as George has so much personality" - She has never had the pleasure of training with a full Lipizzaner before and is fast becoming very hooked on the breed - we just have to breed one here taller than 14.3 hands and I am sure Mel would be eager to take one on!

Presently I am now waiting to hear what my long time riding partner Silvia Ringler says on her return to NZ from Germany - she is coming home for good and bringing her horse home to live here with George and the gang. Silvia is very enthusiastic about the breed and she plans to assist with the training and riding of the Lipizzaners here.

There has been lots of news in New Zealand again this month. We would like to welcome our newest members here in New Zealand to the ALR Inc, Daryl and Lorna Price and family. Daryl and Lorna have had years of experience in horses and have Clydesdales and a Lipizzaner on their property “Woodlands Farm”. I look forward to interviewing Lorna in the near future. I have managed, though, to get an interview with the famous "Paddy" John Mair (sounds like a rock star) about his trip to Australia to meet up with Louise, Hans and the Lipizzaner Gang Down Under. As with all famous people like Paddy, it is very hard to get an interview, he is so popular and sort after, and he has very limited time, so here it is hot off the press:

Best mates - Zoom and Paddy

Paddy's Zoom Trip! Interview by Lisa Spencer-Tomkins

Since Gail Hamilton let her great stallion 3518 Conversano Julliana 111 "Jason" go back to Australia - we have been lacking in stallion power over here in NZ - what I mean by lacking, it's has become a big zero! Jason has left his mark here and Gail has made the right decision for the breed to send him back over the ditch - Thanks Gail from all the Lippy's in NZ!

We needed new blood. Enter Conversano Bekescaba "Zoom". We hoped this young colt by the famous 224 Conversano Allegra V - out of Bekescaba - could now fill the void left by “Jason’s” departure. We felt Zoom would be the perfect stallion to carry on Jason’s great work over here and stamp his own form of brilliance into the NZ Bloodline’s - and who better to send but our own Ace Horseman "Paddy" to make the trip over the ditch to take a look at the new prospect.

11th July 2013

Paddy made the long road trip up to me in Auckland to stay the night before flying out to Adelaide early.

12th July 2013

Paddy set off to the Airport with my Husband who dropped him off on his way to work at 5.30am On landing in Adelaide - Paddy hired his rental car and made the trip to meet up with Louise and Hans - Paddy saw over 20 Lipizzaner's on his visit, Hans and Louise were terrific hosts and took Paddy around to meet everyone - including a visit to Laurel Park owned by Annette and Richard who now own 224 Conversano Allegra V to watch his weekly training session with Barry Stratton - While he was there he managed to meet Zoom's older half brother and he was most impressed with the set up and Leo himself!

13th - 14th July 2013

Paddy had time to connect with the colt and do some pre travel work with him should he end up taking the long truck ride then plane ride to New Zealand. Paddy managed to establish that he worked well with the young colt and they developed a connection.

15th July 2013

Paddy made the long plane ride home - having time to make a decision on the young colt. On landing in Auckland he had to get home quickly and was unable to stay the night as planned. His decision made, the deal was struck and Zoom was ready to make his own plane ride to Auckland!

Zoom Enters New Zealand!

Picking up the colt 2nd August 2013 @ 1.00am NZ time

Paddy made rather an early start with at least a 2 1/2 hour float trip from Taupo to get to Auckland. He picked me up at the Ramarama off ramp and we set off to Auckland International Airport to be there in time for Zoom's 4.00am arrival. Zoom put his feet onto New Zealand Soil, and I realised that at last NZ has a new stallion not related to the mares here! It was finally a reality! The colt was quickly loaded onto Paddy's float at Auckland Airport and we set off back to my stables in Auckland for his stop over - in the transit lounge - Eg Zana's Loosebox. He had something to drink and eat and with the advice of my vet Dr Kevin Miers on what to do after air travel for the horse, we established his temp was back to normal within the correct time frame , so as he was not air sick, he was ready to make the last part of his trip to his new home with Paddy.

Zoom's New life with Paddy

Within 8 Days of Zoom landing in New Zealand - Paddy had sent a DVD of Zoom's training to Louise and Hans. His progress within 8 days is astounding as he seen standing on a tractor tyre and responding to voice and body commands from the ground with Paddy as his trainer. It was obvious to all that Zoom has now decided he is now going to be the David Beckham of the horse world and has taken up hoof ball. His winning tactic is …. in order for the other players not to get the ball back, you simply flop on to it and no one can get it.

He now answers to "Zoom Compadre" or “Zoom Zoom”! Check out his video clips on youtube… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4uJee6I1Ws&list=PL7dyeHiDMwgn5JyB2ViVOR0IjEHz hf7Nz&feature=share&index=1 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn2N0T6pY_4&list=PL7dyeHiDMwgn5JyB2ViVOR0IjEHzhf7Nz&feature =share

Without the Support of John Mair "Paddy", Gail Hamilton, Louise and Hans Krutzler this would not have happened. The Pure line of the Lipizzaner breed will be forever in their debt! I am proud to be connected with such a talented group of people. Paddy's amazing understanding of the breed and handling skills - Gail's knowledge on the bloodlines, conformation and dressage, and Hans and Louise with their limitless knowledge and expecially for breeding Zoom.

We are the lucky ones - having these "Majestic White Horses" in our lives. With this one simple step these people have helped to keep the pure line going longer here in New Zealand without in-breeding . It goes to show that by working together we can keep this breed alive, enhancing them on the way. It is fantastic we now have the ALR who are putting the effort into this and if we don't act now all the hard work that previous generations have done will be in vain.

It is my pleasure to have been asked to report on NZ for the ALR. Thanks for giving NZ a voice on a regular basis. I look forward to the next update. Before I go…. don’t forget to have a look at the video clip of Paddy and the first eight days of training “Zoom”. It is a “must see”!

News from Epona Lipizzaner Stud, Marlborough, New Zealand

Bonadea and Isadora enjoying open spaces

As Jason (C Juliana III) remains in Australia for two more seasons, we have no due in the 2013/14 season. Our two fillies from 2012 are now yearlings, and developing well. Isadora has lightened to a rose grey, while Bonadea remains dark grey. They are quite different in type – Isadora is leggier while Bonadea is more rectangular and will not be tall. (pics from the ones sent to you)

Mistral (C Perletta) is coming three, a lovely gelding with his sire’s quiet, sensible temperament. He is gaining in height and is likely to reach about 14.3 at least. He has not done any work as yet. We are hoping to get some ground work in soon, although it has been a wet season with muddy ground slowing things down. (will try to get a better one of Mistral)

Inzia and Perletta are both well and looking great on the fresh grass of Koromiko. They are lovely mares to work with and we hope to get them back into a of riding work this year. (pic of the two girls grooming each other).

Stud Farm Reports

Habsburg Lipizzaners

On the 1st of January we had an early New Year’s surprise with the birth of our latest addition to the stud. Our lovely mare 249 Sava gave birth to her third colt Conversano Sava III. He is by 224 Conversano Allegra V.

The colt was a little early, but he is now doing fine and he looks a potential as sire material for the future. If his joint size is anything to go by he should mature to a reasonable height like his dam.

Phoenix Park Lipizzaners

We have had a very eventful past couple of months here at Phoenix Park. In short, both our mares that were put to Jason last season have foaled, producing two distinctly different fillies. Both are looking like they will mature into excellently conformed future mares, so we have been incredibly blessed on our first time around the block. Both Stella and Sienna were maiden mares and they foaled out trouble free… what more could you ask for than this. The ALR office has been a hive of activity, no surprises there. We attended the AHAA state championships and our stallion 266 Favory Marta came home the State Supreme Baroque Exhibit champion, as well as Gail’s Montebella obtaining champion mare. Her lovely filly, Gidrane, also had her time in the spotlight and won her filly class, albeit…. a bit show-ring shy! The heat down here in South Australia, has been swinging between scorching and freezing, so the horses as well as us humans cannot seem to acclimatise at the moment. We are hoping everybody has had a great Christmas, New Year and foaling season.

Stonewell Lipizzaners

Stonewell Lipizzaners has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the foal from 255 Stella. With her at Phoenix Park, the waiting for a phone call was excruciating! She produced a lovely filly, Stornella. Thank you goes out to Wayne and Amanda for the part ownership in our favourite mare of theirs, Stella. 103 Lili has now taken up permanent residence with us and has made herself right at home, teaching the boys who’s boss of the paddock. Both 3518 Conversano Juliana III “Jason” and Lili have been out and about in the show ring, both obtaining reserve championship ribbons at the AHAA state championships and hopefully when the warmer weather hits; it will be to the beach we go! We also have a Breed show coming up in February that we will be attending. Jason has also been busy pleasing some delightful ladies and will be paying some special attention to his truly loved girlfriends on their return.

Karinya Park Lipizzaners

I am delighted to announce the arrival of my first purebred Lipizzaner foal, J.J., from 228 Isla by 3518 Conversano Juliana III. This is the first pure bred colt for Jason in Australia, and he can be seen on the foal page. Thus his call name…. J. J. (Jason Junior)! Barney, Conversano Bonita II has settled in well and currently has Jasper as a paddock mate (Favory Marta). Isla will be meeting up again with Jason in the very near future, to hopefully reproduce J.J. the second. Who knows, time will tell.
