b n u d l a C l The Journal of ERAHC The Eastern Region Andalusian Club u s e — si a o r n H August 2013

The 2013 New England Classic Horse Shows The NE Classic shows were exciting, enjoyable, and successful. There were 63 entered in the show with classes ranging from training level through Grand Prix. There were 33 horses entered in the breed show covering a full spectrum of classes, including the inaugural Baroque Eques- trian Games rail classes. Some of the more popular classes were Best Move- ment and Dressage in (for both A/L and HA), as well as Mounted Trail, English Pleasure Hunt Seat, and Working . The weather was a factor on Friday, but the staff and exhibitors managed in spite of the extreme 100-degree heat. The club provided buckets of ice water and towels, plus cups of cool water for the dressage exhibitors as they left the arenas. The weather did cool down for the breed show on Saturday and even more on Sunday. The Saturday evening Iberian Extravaganza was well choreographed and very entertaining. Patricia Norcia spent countless hours organizing the ex- hibitions and conducting rehearsals for our show. She also conducted fund- raisers to offset the cost of these exhibitions. We thank Patricia for the many years she has provided her expertise and dedication to the ERAHC NE Clas- sic. We also wish to extend thanks to our corporate sponsors who generously donated financial support to our show. In this economy, every additional dollar goes a long way to helping our shows remain viable; this has become increasingly important in the past few years. We would like to gratefully acknowledge Poulin Grain, McCauley Equine Center, Brook Ledge Horse Transport, and EBY Trailers. And from begin- ning to end, we sa- lute our volunteers without whose help the show would not have been such an enjoyable and successful endeavor. It is very difficult to find volunteers in a region that is not your “local territory.” We rely on our exhibitors when not showing and, of course, their families and friends. We have been fortunate in having a list of “regular” volunteers in the area, some of whom travel quite far to support the show. A special note of thanks is extended to Gesa Francke, Dr. Sabine Francke-Carroll, Dr. Diane Koz- wick, Janet Tenney, Mary Cooper, Jerry Gamache, Ellen Sproule, Jeanne Bond, Mindy Finelli, Ralph Finelli, and Abby Krudwig. This year’s New England Classic was a great show with lots of cama- raderie and a wonderful family atmosphere. Linda Denniston Show Manager

August—Page 18 Hoof Prints Clinic Report: Isabelle von Neumann-Cosel at Cedar Rowe Lusitanos by Linda Denniston Last April, Cedar Rowe Lusitanos again held a clinic with Ger- man clinician Isabelle von Neumann-Cosel in northern Mary- land. The emphasis of Isabelle’s teaching is on riding in a man- ner that is harmonious with the horse’s movement. Participants had the option of riding and or lunge lessons on their own horse or one of Cedar Rowe’s school horses. Most participants said they achieved the most benefit from the lunge lessons be- cause they could understand and feel their body’s harmonious movement and interaction with the horse’s body and move- ment in a controlled riding condition. We need to remember that the rider is the load in the harmonious riding equation. Isabelle gave each rider exercises to help them feel the re- lationship of his/her own body biomechanics with that of the horse and an awareness of his/her body’s particular move- ments and seat with that of the horse’s back and movements. Participants learned how a wobbly upper body and clamping legs restrict the movement of their seat. The riders became One-day riders worked on observed issues and practiced aware of the importance of a leg aid using the calf and not the exercises that allowed an awareness of how to overcome their heel.
