Editor’s Comments: Hopefully all who went to our annual Eastleigh bash enjoyed it. There was certainly plenty to see. Sadly whilst travelling back my step father went into hospital on the Sunday and died unexpectedly early on the Wednesday. Apparently unbeknown to all he was riddled with cancer masked by all his other ailments. His sudden death caught us on the hop and this has meant we have been extremely busy since arranging the funeral, which was not until the 8th October so still to happen as I frantically write this, getting ready for an influx of relatives from down south and as executor, hence the delay to TRACKS. Apologies again to all who emailed during the last 4 weeks as ICRS has almost totally been on the back burner and answering emails promptly has not been one of my priorities. The only good news is that Mom has been released from the exhausting 24 hour caring role she fulfilled so we can all now move on more easily with just her to look after.

Another interesting railway series ‘Walking Britain’s Lost Railways’ started on Friday 21st September 2018 on Ch5 with a look at the lost lines in my neck of the woods. If you saw it you will see what a stunning line the Moray Coast railway would have been had it been kept open. At least the viaducts at Cullen are still there and you can walk / cycle over them to get the view passengers would have had.

As we post out over 11,000 copies of TRACKS per annum in plastic bags we are switching to biodegradable plastic ‘bags’ in order to do our bit for the environment, which as everyone must be aware is taking a severe hammering from excessive plastic waste. Each bag will be 4p dearer so effectively increasing the admin costs per member by another 44p each pa for posting 11 copies of TRACKS (2019). The biodegradable plastic is more opaque but the carrier sheet can still be read. Hope you all approve.

Errata: Sep 2018 p55 Marcheys House signal box is in Northumberland not County Durham, p56 36501 should read 365501

Books / Sundries: UK Name Directory has sold out but a new edition will be released in early 2019. We have added BLACK polo shirts to our range to match the baseball caps. We will probably drop the dark navy once they sell out to keep 4 distinct colours in our range.

EVENTS

All 2018 events organised, either confirmed or with provisional dates are shown below. Further events may be added in due course between issues of TRACKS so keep an eye on our website. PLEASE DO NOT try to book places for Members Only Visits with provisional dates shown by TBC until they are formalised or where the event though confirmed is many months in advance with details yet to be provided. Once they have, BOOKING OPEN will be shown alongside and a request will be made for you to book your place.

Please note that there is no excuse for booking then not notifying us you cannot then attend or have been delayed travelling on the day, genuine reasons apart. As with events where numbers need to be accurately known by the hosts for a tour, food or room capacity this is not acceptable. We have tried to ease the official’s organising burden and saving you money in postage by allowing members to pay on the day, but this can be abused as it can be then seen as nothing to lose if you can’t be bothered to turn up. We still wish to save time and your money, so we will still try to allow payment on the day but for those who do not turn up and do not have the courtesy to contact us at the time or afterwards will not be welcome to book future tours without a non-returnable payment up front.

We dropped the idea of providing our bank details in TRACKS again as it seems no sooner than we publish these that we get spurious direct debits appear on the Society bank account. It happened before so if it is a member then that is extremely disappointing. If anyone wants to pay for anything up front then we can provide the bank details on request.

MEMBERS ONLY VISITS West Coast Railways, Carnforth: New dates for 2019: BOOKING OPEN th th th Sat 26 Jan, 11 May & 10 Aug: Following our successful first visit in August 2018 we have organised 3 more for 2019. Again the places are limited to 30 but this is the right number having experienced it firsthand as it allowed questions to be asked of our guide and prevented getting in each other’s way...well not too much !! The cost is £20 payable on the day.

For the Jan visit and due to a shorter day meet at Carnforth Station at 10.35 for a 11.00 start. For the May & Aug visits meet at 11.25 for an 11.45 start. The tour will take approx. 3 to 3½ hours so if you are travelling by train please arrange your return accordingly. Needing to leave early caused problems but we got away with it once and we don’t want to risk future visits. There is paid parking at the station or free spaces can be found nearby.

Hi-viz, sturdy footwear and hard hat / bump cap must be worn. We have stocks of hi-viz vests and bump caps to purchase so contact Trevor for more details. All photos taken are for private use ONLY, no public display either online, in magazines or via social media.

Bookings will be taken as soon as you read this by whatever means, but it is not first come first served to be fair to those who missed out on the first two visits and the majority of members that will only read this a fortnight after those receiving a pdf version. As we found by trial and error for the first two visits we don’t need to do a lottery but the final list for each date will be juggled to allow everyone’s preference to be catered for so please be patient. There is plenty of time to make travel plans / book accommodation if needs be. Those on the waiting list will get first pick. If you can’t make any of the dates then you can be put on a reserve list either for cancellations or future visits. If you want to be on a reserve list for the 3 dates in the event of a cancellation then make sure you will be available. We actually had two cancellations for the Aug 2018 visit, one at a late stage and no-one on the reserve list was available for this, but it was filled by a new member.

4 Please apply to Tony Whitehead clearly stating your name, membership number, and importantly a contact telephone number and indicate your preference / availability for the dates shown Email: [email protected] Tel: 07895 386777 but no calls after 20.45 in the evening please as he will be in bed early as he has to be up for work at 04.30 each morning. Best time to ring is after 18.30 weekdays and weekends. Tony will return your email or tel. call promptly so don’t panic. Only if you consistently have any trouble contacting Tony then in the last resort contact Trevor or Christine (details on page 2). We will report back in the Oct issue of TRACKS as to how the demand has been.

FL Basford Hall Yd / Crewe Arms Hotel – Sat 6th April 2019: BOOKING OPEN Our AGM is to be held again at the Crewe Arms Hotel following a visit to Basford Hall Yard. Following the visit there will be food at the Crewe Arms Hotel at 14.30 with the AGM starting whilst we eat at 14.45. 7 EASTLEIGH MEMBERS VISIT REPORT

Our annual Eastleigh bash was held on Sat. 8th September 2018 and was attended by the largest number of members we have ever had, 131 not counting Carl and Norman. Thankfully the weather stayed dry but was mainly overcast with only an occasional glimpse of the sun at the start.

above members gather prior to starting off with the variety of stock seen in the background

Prior to the start of our visit 66154 left with a Riviera Rail Tour with stock: 21269, 3066, 3068, 1671, 3121, 3110, 3119, 3146, 1651, 4991, 4949.

before we could cross into the yard, 66154 headed out with a Riviera rail tour at 14.21

8 The highlight of the visit was the naming or more appropriate re-dedication of 37901 as ‘Mirrlees Pioneer’ now in Europhoenix livery.

Lou & Amy doing the naming honours

TEA 89018/019, KFA 99.70.9319.003-8, 73136, 01508 & 73213

The site was packed with all manner of stock with a variety of wagons on site for store / repair including almost the entire fleet of 24 JGA Hoppers, just 17302/18/20 were missing which are at Tonbridge West Yard (17318) and Doncaster West Yard (17302/20).

9 It was good to see the recent and ongoing conversion of JSA Steel Carriers which have lost their telescopic hoods, of which many have previously been seen in store at Long Marston. The two former GLVs 68501/04 now translator vehicles were on show giving an interesting view of the inner corridor ends and connections (see left).

Many members took advantage of the 3 locos available, 73133, 08567 & 07007 for rides or the ‘Driver for a Fiver’ which coupled with the stock list raised £351.86 for Special Olympics South East Hants. So thanks to Lou and Amy for their efforts organising that.

left 08567 gave rides up the track adjacent the Raxstar area behind a line of IIA Hoppers

below just prior to the end of the day, 08567 (TDA tanks 78210/14), 07007 & 73133 (Mk1 1832) all lined up at the starting points with Carl between the latter two locos

10

above 73133 & 07007 ran up either side of the main access road to the bottom of the site

It was good to see the progress on a couple of long term restorations, 50021 (above) and 4-6-2 35005 (right).

Thanks to Chris who once again did a sterling job almost single handed on our sales / refreshment stand aided at times by Colin. Though we had nearly 3 hours, as usual I found I only just had enough time to tour the entire site taking photos of everything before we started packing up at 17.15. So again for another year I still never found time to take a ride and by the time I got back for refreshments most members had gone so missed any opportunity to chat.

ACCIDENTS

66230 was involved in a collision with a motorised 'buggy' used to move rail staff around Dollands Moor after arriving in early hours of the 4th September 2018 with the 6O16 from Foundry Lane. Unfortunately the ‘buggy’ caught fire damaging the leading cab of 66230 and seriously injuring a member of staff. 66230 has since been moved to Toton for repairs. 14 TRAFFIC & TRACTION NEWS

A further stone train was in Norwich on th hauled by 68018 and 68034 (see photo below the 12 this time powered by 66151. passing Manea at 13.25 by Toby Radziszewski) One of the highlights of the month must have been the arrival of 37610 and 37612 on the 1Q98 Cambridge to Cambridge via Gt. Yarmouth and Lowestoft. This was 37610s first outing since being released to Colas by HNRC and while it had been running well up to that point when it was noted in Norwich 37610 (see LIVERIES) it was operating more like a heavy DVT than a loco with 37612 seen to be doing the lion’s share of the work. It was seen three times on the 13th during its run and on all occasions 37610 was not making much effort! th

Also seen on the 10th were 66730 on the Harwich to North Walsham tanks with two of the side doors either open (if they open inwards) or missing and 66162 on the Tunstead to 37423 + 37259 + 37038, Norwich Yard Norwich stones. A brief visit to Norwich on the 20th saw a fitter making repairs to 37424 in the yard. On the 21st 37424 was seen along with 37405 and 37038 all running in readiness for the return to Crewe. 37038 powered this run. 37423, 37259 and 57007 were all still present in the yard at the time. Sunday 23rd and the Cathedrals Express to Norwich did not go quite a planned as the intended traction 61306 ‘Mayflower’ was substituted in advance of the tour by 60009 37419 ran to Cardiff to drop off and collect DVTs ‘Union of South Africa’. However, the A4 returning on 27th which was also the day that apparently failed it’s fitness to run exam and was 37602, 37605, 37606 and 57003 arrived light pulled to be replaced by 33207 and 47760 (see from Crewe to Norwich for stabling (see below) below). To add the problems an issue on the before being sent to Stowmarket on the 30th for ECML caused the tour to be delayed by over an the RHTT duties. Also on the 27th 37259 and hour eventually arriving 45 minutes late. The time 57007 were in operation on the 3S60 RHTT for was made up by not having to have a water stop south Suffolk and Essex but 37259 failed in en route. Essex. 57007 was used to drag the demic 37 and

RHTT to Norwich for stabling. The RHTT and locos along with the other RHTT locos 37419 and 37409/423 were all seen in Norwich on the 28th giving a very large DRS loco presence in the city.

Away from the loco movements work is underway at Norwich Crown Point for the new units. Sidings are being replaced on the depot for storing units and then stored coaching stock and work is under way on the depot itself. Work is also underway on the Mid Norfolk Railway to construct sidings for storage and also to create an area of double track on the line. Further work for the re-signalling is underway with a possession due between Norwich and the coast over the half term weekend. After that the line from Norwich to Gt Yarmouth via Reedham will be closed for 6 months for work. I don’t know why they have to do this but the junction will be locked out of use and the line will apparently be used as a long storage siding while the works continue. We will have to see if that actually

happens. The fist of the new units is due in the next couple of months according to GA.

FRANCHISE / NETWORK NEWS

Due to signalling difficulties in the Heathrow tunnels and the central core opening of the entire route is has been postponed until Autumn 2019.

A major review on the future of the rail network was announced by Chris Grayling on the 20th September which will consider re-uniting track and train operating companies back together. and overhauling the whole franchise system. As it could be affected by the review the current Cross Country franchise re-negotiation has been cancelled with Arriva continuing until further notice.

The ORR has published an interim report on the timetable chaos finding that no one organisation took control and responsibility. The final report will outline actions required to prevent similar meltdown.

CS is to delay the introduction of the new Mk5 sleeper coaches until Spring 2019 allowing 86101/401 & 87002 a stay of execution for shunting duties and Cl.90s for haulage.

32 RAMBLINGS OF A RAIL ENTHUSIAST by David Spencer - 1989

I try to provide extra detail or follow up photos on the items of traction shown in photos, other than number, date and location as provided by Dave, including what became of them particularly with regards to preservation. This series has now recorded 30 years since starting with 1958 in the Aug 2009 issue with the 1987 instalment in the Oct 2016 issue, so high time this series resumed.

1989: Whilst out shopping after Christmas my wife was taken ill and was taken into hospital, things went from bad to worse and a few days later early in the new year I had a call from the police in the early hours to go straight to the hospital and on reaching the ward I was told she was in intensive care. Her respiratory system had broken down and it took four weeks in intensive care and another three weeks in a ward before she was able to come home. Life was never the same again as although she was alright for most of the time things could change in minutes and I would have to rush her back to hospital.

On the 8th April Midline day was a special day excursion in two DMUs M65444 + M77165 one of which was a Cravens unit, not Crumpsall, 5th May 1989 normally seen in our area. It covered Birmingham, Bescot Curve, Dudley, Stourbridge Junction, Soho Junctions, Walsall, Rugeley, Stafford, Portobello Junction, Walsall, Sutton Park fine, Nuneaton, Knighton South, Branson and Wichnor Junctions and back via Lichfield. This was a most agreeable day out, if only managers were allowed to put on such trips today.

08666 (D3833) Guide Bridge, 8th May 1989 (wd 09/94, cut 06/06)

In May the Union conference was in Blackpool and with Betty too ill to travel I was able to devote spare time to the railways. On the way up I spent the day with a day ranger and a ride round various Greater Manchester lines including the now closed Buxton Steam Centre, before making my way to Blackpool North. On the Saturday morning I managed almost four hours at Preston before I had to return for the start of Conference. On checking she was well I was able to delay going home and spend a couple of hours at Crewe on the way south. The highlight was Cl.20s on the Derby to Crewe trains struggling to maintain the unit timings. With the stress of never knowing how Betty would be and never being able to relax meant I needed the odd break and if I could find a wife sitter I would have a day out. 33 303050 Guide Bridge

I had another such day in July when Betty had a week convalescing in Weston super Mare. I caught a through train to Slough but had to change again at Hayes and Harlington because it was only an emergency rail strike service operating and I had to spent an hour train watching before spending half a day at West Ealing then the up relief platform was the East side of the bridge giving open photos of the endless 47s and 50s still running before the invasion of Cl.165s. Such views are impossible today as the platforms are no longer staggered and the up relief platform is now west of the road bridge. It was a struggle to arrange these get away days so I was frustrated on this day because of the reduced service but in hindsight I still saw a lot of action and it was a good day and by just missing a connection I had an hour at Reading as well on the way home. The following day I sampled the self imposed hell of several hours in a Tyseley DMU. There was a daily diagram taking the 09.23 from New Street to Llandudno and back and on this day I had a typical hybrid of two Cl.115 ex-Chiltern units, one Cl.127 BedPan unit and a Cl.116. These hybrids worked the cross city route for years but the old route maps inside were never removed from the ex-London units so we could dream of exotic places like Denham Golf Club or Mill Hill Broadway without ever leaving Birmingham!. I shunned the delights of the seaside and spent my time on Llandudno Junction and Chester stations. In order to get down to Weston to see Betty I took mother to her friends at Newport and stayed myself a couple of nights so that I could enjoy a valley day rover and revived lots of memories of the 1960s going up and down each valley in turn.

The first day was all 47s but on subsequent days I saw lots of Cl.31 action with generally 4 and as many as 7 different locos in a day as well both single and double headed. Also in August my wife had a week in a hospital at Newcastle under Lyme to undergo specialist respiratory tests not available at nearer hospitals and I stayed with one of mom’s relatives at Cannock to halve the fifty mile round 155347 Preston trip from home. That gave the chance of multiple 21st August 1989 visits to places like Stafford and Crewe and one day I got a North West day ranger from Alsager and another I got on at Sandbach with a Greater Manchester ticket. I always got back in time for evening visiting so I got the best of both worlds, seeing trains and looking after my wife.

39 PRESERVATION GALAS

The following Diesel Gala was visited by a couple of members Paul Normanton and Colin Pidgeon. I actually called in the previous Sunday on our way back from Eastleigh and saw D9521 being painted blue in readiness for the Gala.

th Diesel Gala, 14-16 Sep 2018 by Paul Normanton: I visited on Friday the 14th and on arrival at Lydney Jnct I could see non-active 08238 ‘Charlie’ 31466, 31210 and 73001 with 37308, 31235 (recently arrived from MNR), 73002 (being used as spares donor for 73001) and 25283 all under tarpaulins. There were two trains in service all day from the High Level platform headed by resident teddy bear D9521 freshly painted and visiting D832 ‘ONSLAUGHT’ (courtesy of ELR). They alternated between demo freight services and passenger runs. The passenger train consisted of 4923 + 4980 + 1803 + 80943 + 9003. The freight train was Queen Mary bogie brake van 56303 + dogfish hoppers 983181 + 983231 + 992886 + 983232 + 993591 + 993072 + 993324 + 993464 + brake van 993901. Services ran to time all day although loadings seemed light, presumably the weekend saw a bigger turn-out

D832 on the High Level platform, Norchard, 14th September 2018 (Paul Normanton) the first time a Warship has worked on the line

At Norchard low level was D3937 ‘Gladys’ and the 5 Cl.108 DMU cars, all static 50619 + 51566, 51914 and 59387 + 56492. In the workshops at the rear could be found steam locos 0-6-0ST [3806] ‘WILBERT’, 0-6-0ST WD 152 (WD 75189) [7139/3880] ‘RENNES’ and 2-6-2T 5541. 0-6-0DH [6888] nicknamed Salty was also static in the yard and teddy bear D9555 was tucked away at the rear (out of service with serious mechanical fault see photo at end, ed).

The catering at Norchard was superb with a five page menu, very reasonably priced, quick and tasty. Allow plenty of time to study the menu, you will need it! we only had a ham sandwich on our visit, ed. All in all, this was an excellent visit with friendly staff and plenty to see. by Colin Pidgeon: I visited on Saturday the 15th Though the line between Lydney Jnct (southern terminus) & Parkend (northern terminus) is not very long, a quite intensive service was run with D832 and D9521 (see above for details) with both locos being changed between freight (see consist above) and passenger train with coaches 4980 + 1803 + 9003. D3937 was working from Norchard Low Level to Lydney Jnct with coaches 4923 + 80943 whilst the other two trains were at Parkend. Hunslet 0-4-0DH [5622] ‘DON CORBETT’ a small yellow industrial shunter was in use at Norchard Low Level on ‘Driver for a Fiver’ trips. No close up photo of the loco but you can see it in the photo opposite top with DMUs 51566 + 50619 & 59492 + 59373..no worries see a close up at the end from the previous Sunday, ed 40

Brake van rides were also available in the freight train in former Southern Railway Queen Mary brake van 56305 for a surcharge of £3 for a return from Lydney Junction to Parkend. The price for a Day Rover was £16 which was quite reasonable.

42 Epping & Ongar Railway (EOR) Autumn Diesel Gala by Colin James: The EOR held its Autumn Diesel Gala over the weekend of the 15-16th September. The only visiting locomotive for the event was D8568 (courtesy of the Diesel Traction Group). This joined the home fleet of 03170, 31438 and D6729 plus long term visitor 8001 (courtesy of the Class 20 Locomotive Society). Also in use was DMU Cl.117 DMS 51384 + Cl.121 DTS 56287. Resident 47635 had been advertised for the event but unfortunately its repairs were not completed in time and it was seen in the shed at North Weald, still in undercoat.

Also on the line is 03119 stored at North Weald undergoing an engine overhaul, 45132 stabled at Ongar, still in the midst of its overhaul and DEMU 205205 also stored at Ongar waiting completion of its own repairs. Steam engines stabled in the yard or shed at North Weald were Metropolitan E class 0-4-4 No.1, Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST [3883] ‘LORD PHIL’ & Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0ST [3437] ‘ISABEL’.

The timetable worked with 2 rakes of mixed BR Mk1 & Mk2 stock working the Ongar – Epping Forest services

These were top & tailed between North Weald and Epping Forest. The DMU worked North Weald – Epping Forest shuttles. The Cl.03 was in use on driver experience turns at North Weald (see left) interspersed with brake van trips between North Weald & Epping Forest, with shark brake van ZUV DB 993586. The timetable on the Sunday worked well until 8001 encountered problems with its brakes, which meant some additional shunting, engine swaps on services and 03170 stretching its legs to Ongar. Overall it was a pleasant day on the railway

An arrival on the line this year is 1959 Underground Driving Motor vehicle 1031 which was on display at North Weald. As usual for the railway, vintage Routemaster buses linked the line to Epping underground station in one direction and Shenfield mainline station in the other.

46 NARROW GAUGE MATTERS

0-4-0ST [364] ‘WINIFRED’ by Martin Evans & Trevor Roots: 0-4-0ST ‘WINIFRED’ was built in 1885, works number [364] by the Hunslet Engine Company and is now based on the (BLR). She spent most of her working life up until 1955 at Port Penrhyn where she sorted wagons of slate ready for loading onto ships for transport all over the world then after being replaced by a diesel she spent the last ten years of her life until withdrawal in 1964 working in Penrhyn Quarry on the William Parr gallery. A BBC programme in 1965 on the demise of steam in the quarry was fortuitously seen by an American antique dealer CB Arnette whilst in Glasgow who although not a rail enthusiast sensed a business opportunity and bought six locos from Penrhyn. Exported with ‘NESTA’, ‘MARCHLYN’, ‘CEGIN’, ‘OGWEN’ and ’GLYDER’ she set sail on the 31st July 1965. Auctioned on the 14th September 1965 she along with ‘OGWEN’ and ’GLYDER’ were bought by Tony Hulman, owner of the Indianapolis Speedway, with the intention to set up a museum in his home town of Terre Haute. Only ‘WINIFRED’ managed that for a few years until the museum closed when she went into storage back in Indianapolis. Now out of sight for the next 45 years, she moved in 1992 into a climate controlled warehouse until 2012 when she was purchased by Julian Birley and helped by Graham Morris, brought back home to Wales, along with ‘OGWEN’ (owned by Graham Morris) and ’GLYDER’ (owned by Martyn Ashworth) who moved to Beamish Open Air Museum on the 1st May. In the most original condition of any ‘Quarry’ Hunslet loco she arrived at BLR on the 28th April 2012. Stripped down over the following winter and after completion of an extensive overhaul including re- gauging to 2’ from the original 1’10¾” she returned to steam on the 13th April 2015 initially still carrying the original paintwork and lining as can be seen in the following two photos..

above just after returning to service ‘WINIFRED’ is seen in the workshop at Llanuwchllyn, 3rd May 2015, a fortuitous photo as I have only been to BLR twice, in 2009 and this was the last (Trevor Roots) 47

‘NESTA’ and ‘CEGIN’ are now at (repatriated 27th April 2016), MARCHLYN’ is at Statfold Barn Railway (repatriated June 2011), ‘OGWEN’ is at unknown location in Yorkshire for restoration and ’GLYDER’ is at Beamish Open Air Museum which is to be returned to working order but keep its work worn appearance.

SIGNAL BOX SURVEY

Gillingham: Located on the North Kent line this box was constructed in 1994 and was intended to be a new Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC) but was never fitted out and eventually became the Railtrack Archive Centre. However in 2010 the East Kent Re-signalling Scheme (as reported on in the December 2011 issue) revived its fortune and its role as an IECC, becoming known as the North Kent Operations Centre Photo below by Graham Stockton on the 23rd March 2016.

Metrolink by Geoff Hope: September 2018: The 13 day closure of the Eccles/Media City line at the end of July was the opportunity at Pomona to remove the OHL and relay the new reconfigured trackwork on the new concrete base prepared near the future Wharfside tram stop and transported to Pomona and then re- erecting the OHL. A steel beam was built in to support the first of the main beams of the new viaduct bringing the track to ground level was lifted into place on the 1st/2nd September with completion of the viaduct on the 29th/30th September. The second structure on the Trafford Park line over the Bridgewater Canal will have one complete section in place during September.

On the 23rd August evening rush hour, two trams were taken out of service within ten minutes of each other. The first tram at Piccadilly railway station was taken out of service for police to carry out their investigations due to an assault on a passenger being hit over the head with a bottle, the thug is still at large after the incident. The second tram had a window smashed by a stone throwing incident on the East Didsbury line. On the 6th September, during the evening rush hour at Whitefield on the Bury line, a further bottle incident occurred after a brawl broke out and again the thugs are still at large after the incident. On the evening of 8th September more than twelve cars had windows smashed at East Didsbury Park and Ride. On the 25th September a tram was attacked on the Airport line having to be taken out of service with a smashed window….looks like a ongoing serious issue with moronic vandals, ed.

Metrolink is continuing the partnership with Manchester Pride donating one of the Rainbow trams on Friday 24th August for a Pride weekend marriage travelling from Stretford to St.Peter’s Square for the ceremony and return to Stretford.

Due to the amount of road running on the Ashton line, Thursday & Tuesday 13th & 18th September respectively trials were undertaken on the Media City line to extend the service giving a six minute frequency between Harbour City and Ashton. The trials ran as normal between the hours of 07.00- 20.00 hours on the 2 days to evaluate the success of the service. If successful the possibility of the service becoming permanent in early 2019 could become a reality.

Now the Manchester Pride Weekend has passed, trams 3028 & 3071 have reverted back to standard livery, with ads disappearing on 3039 & 3085 (Just Eat) and 3069 (Stater Menswear). During the observations on Friday 28th September tram 3052 had acquired an All Aboard Easy Jet advertisement and 3091 celebrating Supporting BBC Music Day.

55 WD AUSTERITY 0-6-0ST LOCO SURVEY

Though some have already been covered in TRACKS under various headings this series will endeavour to fully record the surviving Austerity 0-6-0STs (75) that survive from the 485 built. A versatile loco, they can be found on many preserved railways either working or in a dismantled state.

Background: In preparation for D Day in WW2 it was realised that additional locos would be needed in both the UK and on the continent that could go anywhere and operate in difficult conditions so requiring ease of maintenance. The War Dept (WD) was convinced by the Hunslet Engine Co (HE) to adopt a short wheelbased 0-6-0ST which would meet the needs. Based on a Hunslet design for the iron and steel industry a new WD Austerity 0-6-0ST was produced with the design input of Robert Riddles who had moved to the Ministry of Supply (MoS) in 1939 from the LMS. He also designed the 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 Austerity tender locos. In total 377 were built for the WD from Jan 1943 to 1947. Though Hunslet Engine Co built 120, production was subcontracted to several other companies in order to meet wartime demand. These were Andrew Barclay & Sons (AB) (15), Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn (RSH) (90), Vulcan Foundry (VF) (50), & Co (HC) (50) and WG Bagnall (WGB) (52). In addition 2 more locos were built for collieries.

With the end of WW2 the fleet were allocated/sold in the following way: military (90), LNER (75) classified J94, NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) becoming Cl.8800, Nederlandsche Staatsmijnen (11 loaned with 9 then sold) with the remainder going into industrial service in both the UK and abroad.

Additional locos were then produced after WW2 for the NCB (77), British Army (14), Scunthorpe Steelworks (8 by Yorkshire Engine Co). As a by-product of bidding, unsuccessfully as it turned out, for DFIRT in Argentina 15 locos were bought after 1959 by HE and re-built to meet smoke emission restrictions using designs by Argentinean engineer LD Porta. This involved fitting a form of Kylpor ejector and chimney with underfeed stoker with a modification to the coal bunker to allow a feed to the stoker. HE then resold them with 13 going to NCB, 1 to preservation and 1 scrapped. A total of 485 locos were built between 1943 and 1964.

The WD locos that the LNER bought were represented by all the different manufacturers, with 29 in service and in store with the WD and 6 still under construction with AB. The split was AB (10), HC (14), HE (14), RSH (7), VF (14) & WGB (16). Six of the J94s were sold to the NCB after withdrawal by BR between 1963-66 of which only 2 are preserved 68077/78. Of the remaining locos preserved the split by manufacturer is AB (3), HC (3), HE (52), RSH (8), VF (2) & WGB (7).

Sold to the NCB it worked at Easington Colliery numbered 72. It never steamed until restored at the in 2013 and since then has been hired to various preserved railways. For 2018 it is where it is seen opposite bottom in its NCB livery.

It was built in 1944 by Robert Stephenson Hawthorn Ltd as [7139] for the War Dept and initially worked on the Longmoor Military Railway (LMR), then at Marchwood. between 1953-56. It was sold to Hunslet Engine Co in 1960 and re-built as [3880] then sold in December 1961 to the NCB in South Wales where it worked at Mountain Ash Colliery, renumbered 8 until withdrawn in 1979. Moved into preservation at the Big Pit Mining Museum it then moved to the nearby Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. Not having steamed in preservation it was dismantled and an overhaul started in 2002 at various locations with boiler to the SVR and rest to the Flour Mill, Bream, finally moving to the nearby DFR in August 2015. It was brought into service in 2017 in LMR blue livery as seen above.

58 RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS

The Story of 2017 by Ray Smith – Part 6: , Switzerland & : This tour in May 2017once again using a 15 day Inter-Rail pass concentrated on Germany with a quick look into Austria and Switzerland. Going out on , the first night was spent in Brussels before continuing to Germany.

Belgian Railways 1835, Brussels Midi, 10th May 2017

Frankfurt was our destination although some time was spent at Köln West, a good place for freights. Köln Hbf (main station) is one of Germanys busiest, however, most of the long distance freight trains can be seen all over Germany so West is a change where passenger trains can also be seen.

Now on to Frankfurt where the hotel I use all of the time is the Excelssior. It is alongside the station and has a free mini-bar that contains soft drinks and beer! The main station is a busy terminus and below are the S-Bahn platforms. Most of the S-Bahn use the four platforms below. However, some also arrive up top, so both have to be looked at. At times the underground platforms can have all four lines occupied so outer numbers may not be seen. I found out that if you go two stations out to Hauptwache, the S-Bahn is reduced to two lines on an island platform so nothing is missed. Also, if you are looking for underground, there are two lines either side of the S-Bahn and once you get sick of these you can go downstairs for more underground lines. I went looking for my last two S-Bahn Cl.430s, and saw them. At the front of the station is an Irish Pub, a good food and all the tram lines go past...evening meal sorted.

On the 12th May we went to Stuttgart to look at the underground (tram) systems there. Initially we went to Plonkingen. Three reasons, we passed the S-Bahn depot on arrival and freights, that by pass the main Stuttgart stations come through and some single car Cl.650 diesel units terminate there.

left 111091 our haul from Stuttgart to Plonkingen, sadly this class is in decline with many members stored at Hamm, Plonkingen, 12th May 2017

Returning to Stuttgart many trams, using the underground system were seen.

Innsbruck was the next destination via Switzerland. From Stuttgart we went to intending to view Muttenz yard, then spend some time outside the main station tram watching.

Muttenz was fine, however the trams outside the station were few and far between. Up the road was the answer! Major roadworks had ripped up some of the tram tracks as well so the station tram stop was much, much quiter! Next onto our overnight stay at Olten.

left asymmetric, Cl.Be 4/4 tram 501 seen outside Basel SBB station., 13th May 2017

62 Olten is a very busy junction with plenty of freight traffic, even on a Sunday. Our hotel, the Amaris, is situated alongside the railway, less than 200 metres from the station. Some rooms have views overlooking the station. I recommend the buffet breakfast, which is outstanding.

Onto Innsbruck where it has been a good few years since I was last there. All of the city trams have been replaced with younger models! The railway depot, adjacent to the station had very little on. No one to ask for permission to go round, yet not much was missed.

There are three tram lines in Innsbruck but only one passes the station. There is a junction where Brunecker Straßer and Museum Straßer has all three lines. This is only 200 metres from the station where tram 307 is seen above in the pouring rain, 15th May 2017

FREIGHT NEWS: Owing to death of my step-father and time pressures I have had no chance to check the complicated wagon data received, apart from that above, so will catch up in the November issue. The Doncaster iPort received its first service on the 18th September 2018 with 66752 having been officially opened n the 13th September

Eddie Stobart began a new service on the 3rd September 2018 from the Port of Tilbury to the Tesco site in Daventry and then to Mossend. Operated by DRS a four month trial will hopefully see it continue in 2019.

GBRf is to take over from Colas in providing locos for Invicta Rail shunting duties at Peak Forest.

65 NEW STOCK

Though in the past I have attempted to individually show all new stock, with the flood of new stock recently delivered and proposed over the next few years and less pages to work with, it is now impractical to do so. I will continue however to show all new locos and smaller classes of units and coaches but I will only show a representative selection of the latter types, particularly from as many different members / different locations as possible or to illustrate a comparison. So if a particularly unit has not been shown but you photograph it in a more ‘unusual’ location within a reasonable time of it entering service then I will try to include it. left 800109 Doncaster - North Pole, West Hampstead, 3rd September 2018 (Paul Sumpter) and eventual storage at Eastleigh Depot
