25 2nd Sunday of Lent

False prophets whom Pope Francis calls “snake charmers” and “charlatans” lead us astray. They mesmerize God’s children who then mistake true happiness for momentary pleasure ending in slavery to profit or become trapped in loneliness. Many young people enticed by other “swindlers” buy into the “panacea of drugs,” “disposable relationships,” “dishonest gain,” Scripture Readings or a “virtual” existence. Thus people are robbed of “what is most for precious: dignity, freedom and the ability to love,” he says. The Church offers us the Lenten practices of prayer, almsgiving, and fasting which Pope Francis calls a “soothing PRAYER CORNER remedy”. Prayer allows us to eradicate “secret lies” and “self- deception,” and we find “the consolation God offers,” he says. Almsgiving frees us from greed; it helps us regard others Loving God, as brothers and sisters. “How I would like almsgiving You call us back to you with all of our hearts. to become a genuine style of life for each of us!” he says. Fasting “weakens our tendency to violence” reviving “our I feel your call for me deep in my heart desire to obey God,” who alone can satisfy our hunger.

his past Wednesday began the penitential season of Lent as Catholics around the world begin the preparatory journey towards Easter. Just as with the T Mass, there is so much more happening than meets the In this eye. As we will see, contrary to some views, Lent isn’t God’s way of allowing us “do-over” for failed New Year’s Resolution” through the 1st Week of Lent foregoing of chocolate for a few weeks. On this first Sunday of Lent, Mark’s Gospel focuses on Jesus’ Let’s make temptation in the desert. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Mark’s spares details only telling us that Jesus was led into the desert by someone Happy the Spirit for 40 days and was tempted by Satan. The significance here is the number 40 which, mentioned 146 times in Scripture, goes as far back as the beginning! In Genesis, a great flood destroyed the earth due to society’s rejection of God, yet and his family were spared and took refuge in the ark for 40 days. When freed from slavery in Egypt, God brought the Israelites into the wilderness. went to the mountain at Sinai and remained there in prayer and fasting for 40 days, culminating with God renewing the covenant with Moses and the Israelites (who later don’t fulfil their end of the bargain and end up wandering for 40 years!). We see flee into the wilderness for 40 days, arriving at Mount Sinai where angels took care of him and God commissioned him to restore the worship of the one true God. The prophet prophesied of the impending destruction of Nineveh if they didn’t repent. They were given 40 days to repent, and they did and were spared! These are just a few examples of how the number 40 often signifies a period of testing and preparation for a divine mission. As we hear today, though, Son of God, Jesus did not get an exception to this testing. Despite His weakened condition due to fatigue and lack of food for 40 days, Jesus rejected Satan's subtle and not so subtle temptations. Where did Jesus find his strength to survive the desert's harsh conditions and the evil one's testing? He fed on his Father's word and found strength in doing His will! But the desert only marks the beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only a beginning, and the next 40 days of sacrifice are meant to be a preparation for, and a reinforcement of, our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. Each day, Satan seeks to tempt us and try his best to get us to choose our will over God's will. If he can’t make us renounce our faith or sin mortally, he will try to get us to make choices that will lead us, little by little, away from what God wants for us. As in today’s Gospel, Satan is persistent, looking to spring his trap when we are most fatigued. So how do we fight back and pass the test? Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. Each week by participating at Mass, we can imitate Jesus and be fed by His Father’s Word. We are reminded of our need to follow God’s plan when, as a faith community, we join together to pray “lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.” In the Mass and through the Eucharist we are given the answers needed to pass the test! Let’s use these next 40 days to deepen our studies! The Church has a Mission! At the end of Mass, the sends us out on a mission to share the love of Jesus with those we meet.

We can do that in many ways, and in a sense We are all Missionaries. Catholic Family Bible Experience for Families of our Faith Community

The Catholic Family Bible Experience is a program designed especially for families to encourage them to share the Word of God in the home by reading scripture and praying together using a method of reflection and meditation called Lectio Divina. The program is being offered in our parish and 10 other parishes across Long Island in our Diocese of Rockville Centre. The Books of the Bible New Testament program and book has been published for use with the approval of Pope Francis himself!

Last weekend Mgsr. Rick, our Pastor, introduced the program to our parishioners at every Mass. He asked families that were interested in participating to make a real commitment to reading scripture and praying together as a family beginning in this Season of Lent on February 18. There is no cost to the program but there is a commitment — each family must participate in an online survey before starting and again at the end of the eight weeks; and make a real commitment to read, pray and reflect as a family!

The Books of the Bible New Testament was translated into English, Spanish, Italian and Tagalog and appears different than the bible you may have at home. The layout is more like a story; there are no columns, chapters, versus, numbers. One person would read and the other members of family listen; the hope is that as many adults and children participate as possible. There is a limited supply of books and materials available.

We are pleased that nearly 200 families signed up last weekend! They took the first step and reserved the book; they begin the next 5 steps this Sunday, February 18, when they pick up their copy of the book and supporting materials. The six steps are easy; 1) reserve books, 2) participate in online survey, 3) picking up books, 4) read and pray together, 5) use Lectio Divina method of prayer, and 6) submit final survey online at end of program.

What is Lectio Divina? A simple but guided way to read and reflect upon scripture; a way to put yourself in the stories of the bible and better relate to the message and meaning of the Word of God. It encourages us to use our imagination and think more about the situation we read in scripture and become part of the experience. The book takes a family through this method of prayer step by step.

The program is designed to take 8 weeks or about 40 days. A family reads 10 pages a day for six days for a total of 60 pages each week; and one day shares using Lectio Divina prayer exercise. A family may choose to break up the reading according to their family schedule. If your family is interested in participating in this program there are a few books available in English, Spanish, Italian and Tagalog. Pope Francis says, “Don’t let meatless Fridays be a selfish and soulless seafood splurge”

The season of Lent is about sacrifice—acknowledging and giving thanks for the ulmate Sacrifice of Jesus. One of the ways we do this is by abstaining from meat on for Lent Fridays. It can be tempng to use this as an opportunity to gorge yourself on prime seafood delicacies and lobster dinners...but that is missing the point! Preparing a simple fish dish for yourself or your family shouldn’t be a bleak affair. “These Fridays are special because this is that day our Lord gave himself for us [and are to remind us] that we are incredibly loved. All of our experience tells us that we can't or won't be self-sacrificing without this experience of gratude and without spiritual freedom. The Fridays of Lent are a spiritual exercise to offer us both of these graces.”( from Cooking Lent) MARK YOUR CALENDAR Blood Drive PARISH THIS SUNDAY March 22, 2018 8:15 am—2:15 pm LENTEN SOUP SUPPER Lower Level of the Sienna Center 6:30PM - SCS Cafeteria Join Morning Star Youth Ministry as they host our annual Lenten Soup Supper.
