Marcos overtakes Robredo as ‘Solid North’ votes canvassed (1.00/2) With ballots from his known bailiwicks canvassed, vice presidential candidate Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. overtook rival Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo by almost two million votes in the ongoing tally by the Congress on Thursday evening. As of 7:57 p.m. or with 92 out of 165 certificates of canvass (COCs) opened, Marcos garnered 10,493,735 votes, ahead by 1,980,989 votes over Robredo, who got 8,512,746 votes so far. COCs have already been canvassed in known Marcos bailiwicks in the so-called “Solid North” like Ilocos Norte and , where the son and namesake of the late dictator has received 298,786 and 316,121 votes respectively, over Robredo’s 3,704 and 14,140. Marcos also won in Abra with 112,694 votes, while Robredo got only 5,457. 3 Two years of the Narendra Modi government: Five times PM was trolled (0.01/2) Prime Minister Narendra Modi completes two years in office today. We take an opportunity to look back at some of the occasions when the PM became fodder for social media, all in good humour. Kerala-Somalia comparison: Modi found himself in a midst of another Twitter storm after comparing Kerala to Somalia. The backlash was severe. (More hilarious tweets) Mistakenly wishing Afghan President ‘Happy birthday’: On February 12 this year, Modi mistakenly wished Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Twitter wishing him a 'long life and exceptional health and a joyful journey ahead'. The Prime Minister was trolled on social media platform after Ghani replied thanking him for his 'gracious words' but informing him about his right birthday. Modi then wished Ghani in a very witty tweet on his actual birthday. (Interesting details) Badal is India’s Nelson Mandela? In October last year, Modi's comment that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is India's Nelson Mandela led to another deluge of tweets, taking on the PM’s views. When Modi was nudged by a Russian official: Late last year, Modi was pulled back by a Russian official as he walked past the guard of honour accorded to him while the Indian national anthem was being played soon after his arrival here today. As the PM was moving when 'Jana Gana Mana' was being played at the guard of honour by a contingent of Russian military, a Russian official gently nudged him to move back. The image went viral on social media. (Full Story) Modi 'interacts' with statues: In May last year, Modi’s visit to the famous Terracotta Warriors Museum in China became a treasure house for Twitterati as memes flooded the internet. 4 Veterans prefer Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton by 9 points: survey (0.01/2) Veterans favor Donald Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton by 9 percentage points in a new poll released Thursday, though that gap is less than half the margins rolled up by Republicans among that group in the last two elections. Former military members favored Mr. Trump over Mrs. Clinton by 47 percent to 38 percent, with 14 percent undecided. A whopping 59 percent said they have an unfavorable opinion of the former secretary of state, compared with 47 percent who view Mr. Trump negatively. The survey comes as the woes at the Veterans Affairs Department flared up again this week, with some ill-advised words from Secretary Robert McDonald and an acknowledgment Wednesday that the agency has wrongly declared more than 4,200 veterans dead in the past four years, disrupting benefits to veterans and their dependents. SEE ALSO: Donald Trump suggests Democrats will dump ‘crooked’ Hillary Clinton for Joe Biden The errors were revealed in a letter from the VA to Rep. David Jolly , Florida Republican, who requested the information following a string of mistaken death cases in the Tampa region. “These numbers confirm our suspicion, that mistaken deaths by the VA have been a widespread problem impacting thousands of veterans across the country,” Mr. Jolly said. “It’s a problem that should have been addressed years ago, as it has caused needless hardships for thousands of people who had their benefits terminated and their world turned upside down.” Mr. Jolly is a candidate for a Senate seat in Florida this year. He said his congressional staff has helped several veterans get benefits restored after they were wrongly declared dead in the past two years. SEE ALSO: DNC chief in crosshairs as party divisions grow The survey of more than 1,600 former military members by Morning Consult, a nonpartisan media and technology company, could be good news for Mr. Trump, who regularly says on the stump that veterans are treated “horribly” by the VA and the Obama administration. But Mr. Trump also has drawn fire from some veterans group for slow or nonexistent follow-through on promises to give “millions” to veterans charities. Votes of veterans will be a major factor in such swing states with large populations of current and former military members like Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado and Florida. But veterans’ support in those states is no guarantee of victory; Republican Mitt Romney won only North Carolina among those four states in 2012, despite beating President Obama by about 20 percentage points among veterans nationwide. Veterans voted for Republicans by a 20-percentage-point margin over Democrats in the midterm House races in 2014, and made up 17 percent of all voters nationally two years ago. In another sign of soft support among former military members, veterans told Morning Consult pollsters they would prefer the Republican over Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, an avowed socialist, by an even smaller margin than the nine-point gap the tycoon holds over Mrs. Clinton. In a hypothetical head-to-head matchup with Mrs. Clinton’s remaining rival, veterans favored Mr. Trump over Mr. Sanders by just 47 percent to 43 percent, with 10 percent undecided. The polling concluded Monday, the same day that Mr. McDonald created a firestorm by comparing veterans’ wait times for health care services to waiting in line at Disneyland. In the survey, 51 percent of veterans said medical care at VA facilities is worse than the services they could receive from a private doctor or hospital, and only 16 percent said the VA facilities are better. About one in five veterans said the care is the same no matter where they go. Sixty-three percent of the veterans in the poll said the VA’s problems are “due to long-standing government bureaucracy,” while 21 percent blamed the Obama administration for the agency’s problems. 5 Time Inc's CEO on eradicating 15-foot offices to shift the publisher's culture Joseph Ripp, the chief executive of Time Inc, has said his company's leap into the digital space was only made possible after "an awful lot" of culture changes in the organisation. The chief executive, who originally left parent company Time Warner in 2001 and arrived back in 2014, is now leading a legacy print company that has seen its digital audience increase 83 per cent over the last two years. Speaking at the Festival of Media Global, Ripp also highlighted the brand's dedication to video content, producing more than 40,000 films last year alone. This focus was amplified earlier this month with the launch of Instant – an all video platform covering the lives of the new breed of digital celebrities. "The changes that we've made are really to embrace other forms of distribution for our content," he told The Drum. "I think that print mags have been declining for ten years and will keep declining. That doesn't mean that there's no lack of interest in the things that we write about, there's just going to be fewer people distributing on print. " It wasn't an easy change for the publishing house, which grew its first roots in 1920s New York City. Ripp explained: "The biggest problem you have in large organisations is changing the culture. Sometimes fundamental beliefs get embedded, like: 'We're the magazine company' and you have to change that. " He that explained basic changes, such as swapping the company's C-suite executives' offices for something less ostentatious, were key to leading this culture change. "It has to start at the top. When I came back from Time Inc I had a suite; my office was half a floor with a private bathroom that was bigger than my office is right now. "You have to say that that stuff isn't important – the success of the company is. Our New York headquarters went from 1,642 offices to 100: we had people in 10 by 15-foot private offices who went to a five foot desk. "They couldn't be happier because the place feels more vibrant, it feels more alive and there's more energy. " When asked if he believed Piers Morgan's claims that print has a terminal illness , Ripp was realistic. "I think that print mags have been declining for 10 years and will keep declining. You can distribute on all platforms, so why limit your distribution to a form of distribution that’s slowly and steadily going down? " He added: "The quality of the content, the compelling stories, the access we have: that hasn't changed. We're finding growth by recognising that, not crying that print is declining. Understanding that it is and going so what? There's plenty of forms of distribution for us that we're going to do quite well in. "

Agnieszka Drabik: Adding Polish flair to PH collegiate hoops In the middle of their summer vacations, cage stars from the UAAP and NCAA meet for a few rare times in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup. It’s also in this tournament where one Polish lady found her referee shirt. In the game between College of St. Benilde and Emilio Aguinaldo College, one fair lady was running the sidelines. Agnieszka Drabik had her long blonde hair braided, her high heels tucked away in favor of black sneakers and her Polish accent barking violations after she blows on her whistle. Standing at just a few inches above five feet, Drabik was perfectly at home in the floor as she witnessed Blazers beat the Generals 71-46. Aga, as her officemates here in the Philippines call her, found herself arriving in the tropical archipelago back in February from Poland and by a stroke of luck found out about the offseason tournament where she continued her passion for officiating basketball games. “My dad was a coach and he is refereeing right now as well so somehow, naturally, I was getting involved and so I became a referee,” said Aga, who is in the Philippines working as a Human Resources Specialist for Philip Morris International. Her main focus is her day job for the tobacco giant but the rush of officiating games was always in her. “Right now I’m in the office on a daily basis, however, after hours sometimes I ask for the day off and I ask to be flexible,” said Aga. “In my off days I referee.” Aga added being a female refereeing in mostly a men’s sport has its fair share of struggles. “You’re a woman, they [male basketball players] feel you’re not in the level that they should be, they see you as ‘okay you’re a woman, you should stay in the woman’s game’ so you have to first gain their trust,” said Aga, who started her officiating career at the age of 19. “Before you start officiating they look at you a bit strange then after you make calls, you get their trust.” “They are surprised to see me on the floor, they just don’t know who I am, it’s OK here.”

Bacsinszky downs Bouchard at French Open Timea Bacsinszky’s love affair with Roland Garros continued on Thursday when she swept aside struggling Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the French Open. A semi-finalist last year where she lost to eventual champion Serena Williams, the Swiss eighth seed trailed 1-4 in the first set before she took control, winning 10 games in a row to serve for the match at 5-0 in the second. Bouchard, a French Open semi-finalist in 2014, the year she rose to fifth in the world, staved off defeat by winning that game and she saved a match point on her own serve to pull back to 5-2. The fight-back continued with another break of serve and a hold to get to 5-4, but Bacsinszky finally held firm on her serve at the third time of asking to seal the win. The Swiss No.1 will next play either France’s Pauline Parmentier or Irina Falconi of the United States for a place in the last 16. “I am happy with the win especially as I was 5-0 up and then it was 5-4 and she had two chances to get to 5-5. So I really made it complicated for myself,” she said. “I just love Roland Garros. It brought me back in to tennis three years ago and I reached the semi-finals last year. Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamt of this tournament.” ak/dj

Despite missing RoS pals, Norwood happy to be back at Gilas camp If there’s one guy who feels the absence of Paul Lee the most, it’s Gabe Norwood. Seeing how great Lee played for Rain or Shine during the recently concluded 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, the Gilas defender could just sigh wondering what could have been for the national team to have the Rain or Shine guard in its lineup. “We’ll miss him for sure, especially coming off the way he was able to perform in the Finals,” he said. Lee earlier begged off from Gilas Pilipinas due to his recurring knee injury, joining and Matt Ganuelas-Rosser in the injury list for the pool. Norwood knows how tough the decision was for Lee to miss the buildup for the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held here in in July. But he said that one must put a premium on health over anything else. “My biggest concern is his health. He’s put a lot on his body over the last couple of years and he’s focused on getting healthy. Hopefully, he gets healthy sooner than later,” he said. Also, Norwood wishes the same for teammate , who is still recovering from his groin injury and is hopeful to soon join Gilas Pilipinas in its practice sessions. “Jeff is in same boat trying to get healthy. I think his isn’t as serious as Paul’s situation, but he’s going to take his time and make sure he’s a hundred percent,” he said. Though he may be facing a possibility of missing his fellow Elasto Painters in the national team, Norwood is still upbeat with the pool’s chances, rekindling bonds with teammates in the old incarnations of Gilas. “It’s always fun to be back here and understand what the journey is about and what the goal is. If that doesn’t excite you – to represent the country in the Olympics, I don’t know if anything can excite you more than that,” he said. “I’m happy to be here, to get back to work around these group of guys and some new faces. It’s still a little early, but we’ll really see when we get to training camp.”

Macalintal calls Robredo ‘presumptive’ VP Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal on Thursday said Camarines Sur Representative Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo is the country’s “presumptive vice president” as she is leading the tally of votes in the vice presidential race. “Kami naman, ang sinasabi naman namin na si Leni, siya naman ang presumptive vice president. Kasi ang presumptive president ay kung sino ang lamang. Kaya sinasabi namin na dahil sa lamang si Leni, siya ang presumptive vice president,” Macalintal said in a radio interview. (We say that Leni is the presumptive vice president. The presumptive president has the highest number of votes. And because Leni is leading, she is the presumptive vice president.) Macalintal, who is representing Robredo in the Congress’ canvassing of votes for president and vice president at the House of Representatives, cited the case of presidential frontrunner Rodrigo Duterte, who is being referred to as “presumptive President-elect.” However, former Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr., a counsel for Robredo’s closest political rival Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., said it was “presumptuous” for Macalintal to make such claim, as the son and namesake of the late dictator has not yet conceded defeat. READ: Marcos lawyer blasts ‘presumptuous’ Robredo for claiming victory Brillantes noted that Duterte can be called presumptive President and clear winner in the presidential race because his closest rivals have already conceded defeat to him, which, he said, was not the case for the vice presidency. “Duterte can legitimately be referred to as presumptive not simply because he is leading the unofficial count but due to the fact that his adversaries have already publicly conceded—a situation that is not applicable to VP candidate Robredo. Robredo’s lawyer is therefore presumptuous in claiming that his client should also be referred to as presumptive, even with her measly lead in an unofficial count,” Brillantes said in a statement. READ: Robredo camp says Bongbong wasn’t asked to concede “Presumptive winner is a new concoction and used for the first time in the May 2016 elections not only because of the wide margin of presidential candidate Duterte’s victory but more so because such victory has been accepted by all of his opponents except deceased Roy Señeres,” he added. But Brillantes said he would be the first to congratulate Robredo should the Congress proclaim her as the winner in the vice presidential race. Robredo was leading Marcos by more than 200,000 votes in the unofficial tally of votes and at the close of the first day of Congress canvassing. RAM

Flashback: When Dravid, Tendulkar, Jaffer and Karthik rewrote Test cricket history India were brought down to earth by Bangladesh on March 17 during the 2007 ICC World Cup as they beat the tournament favourites by five-wickets at Port-of-Spain. India, under Rahul Dravid's captaincy, then had to wait till May to exact revenge on its neighbours by thrashing them in the 2nd Test at Dhaka with four Indian top- order batsmen -- Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar -- each getting a century. The match started on May 25, 2007, with Bangladesh winning the toss and putting India into bat. Openers Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik came out to bat. The opening duo saw off the new ball and started accelerating. Karthik and Jaffer both were lucky but ended up recording the biggest opening partnership for India vs Bangladesh in Tests with an unbeaten stand of 175. The Karnataka right-hander scored 129 and Jaffer made 138. At tea, Karthik was forced to retire owing to the heat and humidity and Rahul Dravid joined Jaffer in the middle. Jaffer teamed up with Dravid for another unbeaten stand of 106. Batting at 138, Jaffer succumbed not to the Bangladesh bowling, but the heat and humidity, and had to retired ill. Sachin Tendulkar then joined Dravid. India thus had an unbeaten partnership of 281 for the first wicket with three cricketers involved. Dravid finished Day 1 unbeaten on 88. India thus ended the first day without losing a single wicket but with both openers back in the pavilion. India's score of 326 for no loss at the end of Day 1 is among the best by teams, beating Australia’s 18-year-old record of 301 without the loss of a wicket against England at Trent Bridge. Interestingly, this was also the first time in Test cricket history that both openers had retired ill and the top four batsmen had combined to score more than 300 runs. On Day 2, Dravid brought up his 24th Test hundred. Dravid and Tendulkar added 127 for the 'first' wicket. India were at 408 and needed only five more runs to equal Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy’s 52-year-old record of 413 for the opening wicket. But Dravid (129) was dismissed by Mohammad Rafique. It had taken Bangladesh 108.2 overs to pick India's first wicket. Karthik, unbeaten on 82, returned and completed his maiden Test hundred before being dismissed for 130 by Mashrafe Mortaza. Tendulkar ensured he reached his 37th century and remained unbeaten on 122. Thus on May 26, 2007, India rewrote history books as it was the first time that the first four top-order batsmen had all scored a century in the same innings in a Test match. India posted a mammoth 610 in the first innings and Bangladesh succumbed to an innings defeat. Zaheer Khan took seven wickets in total on a flat deck and he was awarded the Player-of-the-match. Brief scores: India 610 for 3 decl. (Wasim Jaffer 138 retired ill, Dinesh Karthik 129, Rahul Dravid 129, Sachin Tendulkar 122*; Mohammad Rafique 2 for 181) beat Bangladesh 118 (Zaheer Khan 5 for 34) & 253 (Mashrafe Mortaza 70, Mohammad Ashraful 67; Ramesh Powar 3 for 33) by an innings and 239 runs.

Obama: World leaders rightfully ‘rattled’ by Trump SHIMA, Japan—US President Barack Obama says world leaders are “rattled” by Donald Trump and have good reason to feel that way. Obama is discussing the 2016 presidential campaign during a news conference in Japan, saying foreign leaders are surprised by Trump and not sure how seriously to take the things he says. Obama says many of the likely Republican nominee’s proposals display ignorance about world affairs, a cavalier attitude or an interest in getting “tweets and headlines.” He’s contrasting that to proposals to make America safe. The president is also downplaying Democratic concerns about the long- running primary fight between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. He says sometimes in a primary people get “grumpy.” But Obama says the difference between Democrats and Republicans this year is the Democratic candidates aren’t that ideologically different.

Lawsuit alleges Yakima employee was fired for old age YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A 64-year-old man has filed a $1 million lawsuit alleging he was fired by the city of Yakima because of his age and related salary incentives. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports (http://bit.ly/1UeMvIc ) that Doug Mayo’s suit claims former City Manager Tony O’Rourke told him he was being fired as city engineer in June 2013 for economic reasons but then gave raises to other employees. Mayo also points to messages exchanged between former utilities/engineering manager Debbie Cook and assistant city attorney Jim Mitchell. The suit alleges one message said Mayo was being terminated because he was “old” and “feeble.” O’Rourke said in an email Wednesday that Mayo resigned from the position and wasn’t terminated. The city declined to comment on pending litigation. ___ Information from: Yakima Herald-Republic, http://www.yakimaherald.com 2016-05-26 17:57 - www.washingtontimes.com

Sharks head to 1st Cup final after 5-2 win over Blues SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Two years after their most devastating playoff loss, the San Jose Sharks held their most meaningful celebration. The franchise notorious for falling short each postseason will finally get the chance to play for the Stanley Cup. Captain Joe Pavelski scored an early goal, Joel Ward added two more and the Sharks advanced to their first Stanley Cup final in franchise history by beating the St. Louis Blues 5-2 on Wednesday night in Game 6 of the Western Conference final. “You try to learn from experiences,” Pavelski said. “You like to not have to. But that’s the course we’ve taken. Now that we’re here, again, this was a great step for us. It was another step. … But we realize there’s more out there. That’s what we’re going to turn our attention to.” Few outside San Jose thought this day would come so soon after the team blew the 3-0 series lead in a soul-crushing playoff defeat to rival Los Angeles in 2014 and then missed the playoffs entirely last season. But on the same ice surface where they watched the Kings celebrate on the way to their second championship, the Sharks posted the biggest win in their 25-year history. “That was as low as you can get as a professional athlete, individually and team wise,” center Logan Couture said. “Then last year obviously tough time missing the playoffs and going through some stuff as a team. I really think everything we’ve gone through has made us a lot stronger as a group.” The players who endured those disappointments played a big role in getting past them. Joe Thornton set up Pavelski for the first goal, Patrick Marleau had two assists in the third and Couture had a goal and two assists to give him a league-best 24 points this postseason. But unlike past years, San Jose’s stars got plenty of help. Martin Jones made 24 saves, Ward posted his second straight two-goal game and rookie Joonas Donskoi also scored as the Sharks got lots of contributions from some of the newcomers general manager Doug Wilson brought in over the past year. “It’s huge just for the people who have been here so long,” Ward said. “I think this was an unbelievable accomplishment for sure.” Despite making the playoffs 16 times in 18 seasons and winning the second-most games in the NHL since the start of the 2003-04 season, the Sharks have lacked postseason success. They won just three games in three previous trips to the conference final, were knocked out twice in four seasons by a No. 8 seed and then had the collapse against Los Angeles in 2014. The impact of that loss lasted for a while as San Jose missed the playoffs entirely last season. But led by first-year coach Peter DeBoer, a familiar core and added depth, the Sharks recovered this year and are now only four wins from a championship. “It’s a pretty cool feeling,” Thornton said. “Obviously it’s our first time. It was pretty neat to get this done at home. The fans here have waited so long, 25 years. We’ve waited 18 years or so. So it’s a great feeling.” This was the first time in San Jose’s history that the team played with a trip to the Stanley Cup final on the line. The atmosphere in the Shark Tank reflected the high stakes with the fans at a frenzy during pregame introductions. The “Let’s Go Sharks!” chants started soon after the puck dropped, and those chants turned to “We Want The Cup! We Want The Cup!” in the third period after San Jose took a 4-0 lead. 18 New Jersey lawmakers to vote on Atlantic City rescue bills TRENTON, N. J. The Democrat-led Assembly and Senate have scheduled votes for Thursday on a package of bills to help the city. Republican Gov. Chris Christie says he’ll decide quickly whether to sign or veto the legislation. Christie says it contains the authority that he has been seeking, but he declined to say Wednesday if he supports the deal. The legislation gives the city five months to come up with a plan to balance budgets over five years. The deal eliminates, for now, the threat of a state takeover, and resolves a nasty political fight that has raged since January and pushed the resort ever closer to bankruptcy.

A wake for Auburn Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr. is scheduled for Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Charlton. A funeral Mass is planned for Friday morning at St. Joseph, followed by burial at Greenville Baptist Church Cemetery in Tarentino’s hometown of Leicester. The 42-year-old was shot in the back by Jorge Zambrano during a traffic stop early on May 22, authorities said. Zambrano was later killed after he fired at police from a bedroom closet inside a duplex apartment, injuring a state trooper, state officials said. Zambrano had a long criminal history, and some have criticized the judicial system for allowing him to be free after a string of recent arrests and repeated probation violations. Trial Court Chief Justice Paula Carey said in a statement Wednesday that court officials are reviewing all Zambrano’s interactions with the court system, including the probation department. Carey said a preliminary review shows no violation of court rules, laws or procedures. She said a thorough review of Zambrano’s court cases is a “major priority” for the Trial Court. Tarentino was the son of a longtime Medford officer and an avid outdoorsman. He’s survived by his wife and three sons.

Rescuers retrieve body of Dutch climber who died on Everest KATHMANDU, Nepal—A helicopter on Thursday retrieved the body of a Dutch climber who died last week on Mt. Everest, while attempts were being made to retrieve the bodies of two other climbers and to locate two more who went missing on the world’s tallest mountain. Eric Arnold had reached the 29,035-foot summit on Friday, but then died on his descent of apparent altitude sickness near South Col, which sits at 26,300 feet. A team of climbers was able to bring his body further down to Camp 2, where it was picked up Thursday morning and taken directly to a hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, and then on to the morgue. Expedition leader Arnold Coster accompanied the body. Climbers were still attempting the difficult task of carrying two more bodies —of Australian climber Maria Strydom and Indian climber Subhash Paul— to a point where they could be retrieved by helicopters, which cannot go far beyond Camp 2 due to high winds and thin air at higher altitudes. Strydom and Paul also apparently suffered altitude sickness, with Strydom dying on Saturday while Paul succumbed on Monday. Meanwhile, another team of Sherpa guides were heading to a spot called the Triangular Face, the final push toward the peak, to search for two other Indian climbers who went missing last weekend. “Other climbers reported they might have spotted the bodies in the area,” mountaineering department official Gyanendra Shrestha said, and noted it was unlikely they would have survived the harsh conditions on the mountain. But there was little time left for the search, with bad weather and monsoon rains expected to pick up at the end of May. If the two Indian climbers are confirmed dead, that would bring the death toll for this year’s Everest climbing season to five. Many had hoped for a safe season, after avalanche disasters left 19 people dead in 2015 and 16 Sherpa guides in 2014. Nearly 400 foreign climbers, guides and Sherpas have made it to the top of Everest this year. Separately, a Sherpa guide Ang Phurba slipped and fell about 6,500 feet to his death on May 19 while fixing ropes on the adjacent 27,940-foot peak of Lhotse. His body has been recovered.

PSEi dragged by JG Summit deal THE LOCAL stock barometer ended a three- day run-up on Thursday, weighed down by a $250- million JG Summit share- sale and fresh valuation jitters. The Philippine Stock Exchange index lost 87.57 points or 1.17 percent to close at 7,376.38, bucking the regional upswing. The local market was led lower by JG Summit, which fell by 9.65 percent to close at P82.40 after the conglomerate’s founder John Gokongwei Jr. sold bulk of his remaining personal shares to institutional investors. “Right now, the market was dragged by the JG Summit placement, being an index-linked stock. It also served as catalyst for market investors to cash in,” said Manny Cruz, chief strategist at stock brokerage Asiasec Equities. JG Summit, the day’s most actively traded company, has a 6.88 percent weight on the PSEi basket. Value turnover at the local stock market swelled to P18.63 billion because of the JG Summit deal. Gokongwei sold on Thursday 142.5 million of his JG Summit shares at P82.10 for a total sum of P11.7 billion. (Please see related story) “Despite that, we think it serves as an opportunity to position in selected counters as overall position remains upbeat,” Cruz said. With JG Summit’s decline, the holding firm counter fell by 2.17 percent while the financial, industrial, services and property counters all declined. Only the mining counter (+0.36 percent) was up for the day. There were 109 decliners that overwhelmed 65 advancers at the market while 56 stocks were unchanged. MPI also declined by 2.59 percent while Globe, SMIC, SM Prime, Metrobank and Jollibee all tumbled by over 1 percent. URC, ALI, AC, AP and LTG all slipped. On the other hand, AGI gained 1.63 percent while AEV and PLDT also firmed up. Across the region, stock markets were mostly higher alongside an increase in global oil prices. Brent crude breached the $50 per barrel mark for the first time in six months.

Report: 46 states made prison-related reforms in 2014-15 NEW YORK (AP) - A new analysis has found that nearly every state made prison-related reforms in 2014 and 2015. The Vera Institute of Justice report released Thursday finds that in those two years, 46 states enacted 201 bills, executive orders and ballot initiatives. The fixes ranged from improving bail systems to supporting recently released former prisoners to curbing the use of solitary confinement. Other states created specialty courts for veterans, the homeless and drug addicts. Policymakers nationwide also sought to reduce the number of people who ended up behind bars by shortening jail stays and providing alternative sentences. The nonprofit says the reforms are the result of expensive correctional systems and a growing consensus that for too many the criminal justice system is unfair.

2008 Digos bus bombing suspect nabbed in Maguindanao KORONADAL CITY—Police and military forces arrested at dawn Thursday in Maguindanao one of the suspects in the 2008 Digos City bus bombing that killed six people and wounded about 30 others. Also arrested during the 4 a.m. raid was the village chair of Penfarm, Datu Paglas, Maguindanao. Senior Insp. Allan Uy, chief of operations of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PNP- CIDG-ARMM), identified the bombing suspect as Kamad Makauyag, 39, a member of the Al-Khobar extortion gang, who was named in the arrest warrant issued by the Digos City Regional Trial Court. Also arrested was Mahal Matalam, chair of Barangay Penfarm, Datu Paglas, Maguindanao, where Makauyag had been hiding since the Metro Shuttle bus bombing at Digos City terminal. “Matalam was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms,” Uy said. Makauyag, alias Madz, did not resist arrest but appeared to be puzzled why he was arrested. “I have no idea why I was arrested. I was not involved in the bombing. I am just an ordinary farm worker,” he told reporters at the CIDG-ARMM detention cell in Cotabato City. The Al-Khobar extortion group, composed of former Moro rebels turned bandits, was blamed for a series of bus bombings in North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato and Davao del Sur after the transport firm ignored the group’s extortion demands. Uy said while the arresting agents were readying the warrant against Makauyag, other agents searched Matalam’s house, where high powered guns were recovered. The firearms included a German-made .22-cal. rifle, 9mm sub-machine gun and a.40-cal. pistol with ammunition. Uy said the obbject of the operation was Makauyag but they also searched houses nearby, where the firearms were seized. The April 2008 bombing killed six passengers and injured 30 others after the suspects set off a powerful improvised explosive device with cut nails as shrapnel. It was placed on an overhead bin of Metro Shuttle Bus which was heading for Malita, Davao del Sur, from Davao City and had a brief stopover at the Digos terminal. Al-Khobar at the time was demanding a P500,000 “protection money” from the bus firm, according to then Supt. Francisco Villaroman, Region 11 police intelligence chief. Makauyag was the third suspect arrested in connection with the bus bombing. In 2011, police in Kidapawan City arrested Nor Muhammid, 22, an alleged Al-Khobar gang member, in his residence in Barangay (village) Nuangan. A certain Tahir Sindai, another alleged gang member, was arrested by a police special unit in Buluan, Maguindanao, in May 2014 also for his alleged involvement in the Digos bombing. RC/rga

Abueva moves on from PBA heartbreak, gives it all for Gilas Despite a series of heartbreaks in the PBA, Calvin Abueva doesn’t need anyone to light a fire under him. There’s no need to remind Abueva of his recent setbacks to motivate him to work harder as he dons the Gilas Pilipinas jersey for the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July. “Lagi nilang binabanggit yung past, pero ibang league itong papasukan natin eh,” he said on Thursday after the national team’s early morning practice at Meralco Gym. “Big league ito. Talagang magpo-focus ka at ibibigay ang lahat para sa laban na ito.” Named as the Best Player of the Conference in the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Abueva led Alaska to its fourth Finals appearance in five conferences. Unfortunately, the Aces came up on the losing end in all of those trips. Abueva hasn’t had a break since the October 2014, when the 2014-2015 PBA Season kicked off, but the energetic forward remains steadfast in his goal to deliver for flag and country. “Talagang walang pahinga. Pero kailangang todo sipag, todo laro sa practice,” he said, sharing that he has hardly had any vacation since last year. “Ngayon, tuloy-tuloy pa rin. Wala talagang rest, pero pursigido pa rin tayo na maglaro sa qualifiers para sa bayan.” And as he makes his second tour of duty for Gilas, Abueva is motivated to exceed expectations and help the squad reach the great Olympic dream. “Kailangan talaga ng hardwork. Di mo pwedeng pabayaan ito kasi once na pabayaan mo, mawawala ka sa play at mawawala ka sa focus sa game,” he said.

Nuclear-free aspirations of Obama, Abe conflict with reality TOBA, Japan (AP) - There is the soaring rhetoric. And then there’s the messy reality. When U. S. President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe make a historic visit to Hiroshima on Friday - the first time a sitting U. S. president has visited the site of the first atomic bomb attack - their words advocating nuclear disarmament will clash with real-world security necessities. Far from backing up the vision of a world without nuclear bombs that Obama laid out in a 2009 speech that helped secure a Nobel Peace Prize, his near-finished presidency has seen a multibillion-dollar modernization of the U. S. nuclear force. Japan’s long postwar commitment to disarmament, meanwhile, is only possible because of its reliance on the so-called American “nuclear umbrella” that protects it from antagonistic North Korea and China. Tokyo, should it choose, could probably easily convert its advanced civilian nuclear program into a weapons program, and some conservatives in Abe’s ruling party have argued that the country’s pacifist constitution technically allows nuclear weapons. In advance of flying to Hiroshima, Obama said Thursday that the dropping of the atomic bomb was an inflection point in modern history and something everybody must deal with. “I do think that part of the reason I’m going is because I want to once again underscore the very real risks that are out there, and the sense of urgency that we all should have,” Obama told reporters in Shima, Japan, after meeting with leaders of major advanced economies. “It’s not only a reminder of the terrible toll of World War II and the death of innocents across continents, but it’s also to remind ourselves that the job’s not done.” Despite his own mixed record on nukes, Obama likely sees his Hiroshima visit as a worthwhile expenditure of political capital in order to shore up a global nonproliferation effort that seems at times to be crumbling. Before the most recent of a series of nuclear security summits meant to reduce and protect nuclear material, Obama wrote in March that eliminating all nuclear weapons may not happen in his lifetime. “But we have begun. As the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, the United States has a moral obligation to continue to lead the way in eliminating them. Still, no one nation can realize this vision alone. It must be the work of the world.” Obama’s vision of a world without nuclear weapons was challenged almost immediately. His April 2009 speech in Prague happened within hours of North Korea’s launch of a long-range rocket that outsiders, including the United Nations, called a cover for a test of banned missile technology. Pyongyang is still barreling ahead in its push for nuclear-armed missiles that could reach the U. S. mainland. Obama secured a deal meant to limit Iran’s nuclear program, if it can be implemented amid mistrust on both sides. But Pakistan and India are still locked in a nuclear standoff. The United States and Russia, which have most of the world’s nuclear weapons, often see their geopolitical jockeying for position interfere with disarmament efforts. And there are growing worries about the security of nuclear fuel sites around the world. Obama’s trip to Hiroshima also comes amid anxiety that North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile capabilities could lead to the top U. S. allies in Asia, Japan and South Korea, starting their own nuclear weapons programs. It is highly unlikely either country will go nuclear. It could cause huge political and economic damage - crippling sanctions, global condemnation - and jeopardize their alliances with the United States. But a small group in South Korea, including some conservative members of the ruling party, and some in Japan see the North Korean danger as too grave to rely only on the protection of another country. They also question whether, despite rhetoric from U. S. officials about an “ironclad” alliance, Washington would really use nuclear weapons and risk the lives of thousands of American troops should a belligerent North Korea attack. The Chosun Ilbo, South Korea’s top newspaper by circulation, said in an editorial weeks after North Korea’s nuclear test in January that discussions in Seoul on acquiring nuclear weapons were inevitable. 27 Whale-finding phone app grows in use, steering mariners away PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - With summer whale watching season fast approaching, conservation advocates and government agencies who want to protect whales say a mobile app designed to help mariners steer clear of the animals is helping keep them alive. The Whale Alert app provides a real-time display of the ocean and the position of the mariner’s ship, along with information about where whales have been seen or heard recently. It also provides information on speed restrictions and restricted areas, and recommends routes shippers can take to avoid endangered species such as the blue whale and the North Atlantic right whale. New England whale watching companies are gearing up for summer, and more than a quarter of the entire North Atlantic right whale population visited Cape Cod Bay this season. That means conditions are perfect to get more mariners and the public on board with protecting whales, said Patrick Ramage, whale program director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Andy Hammond, of Martha’s Vineyard, is one such mariner. He has used the tool aboard pilot boats to avoid whales in Boston Harbor. “It’s all about making sure people understand the regulations and how to operate in certain areas,” Hammond said. “It takes the guesswork out.” Collisions with high speed ships are one of the leading causes of death for some species of whales, and many mariners often try to navigate around them using outdated equipment. IFAW collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the app, which provides information on both U. S. coasts. Alaskan cruise ships began using it this month. Ramage said more than 33,000 users have downloaded the app, which first came out four years ago, and recent changes - such as giving civilians the ability to report whale sightings - have made it more popular. “It is literally a situation where the sort of fog of incomplete data or outmoded equipment can be lifted for the mariner,” Ramage said. The app shows a broad area where the whales are located as opposed to a pinpointed location because of concerns about the possibility of recreational boaters attempting to get close to the animal, Ramage said. The app was funded by donations to IFAW, which raised more than $500,000, he said. It’s free and can be downloaded by anyone with an iPhone or Android. ___ Online: http://www.whalealert.org/

Suspension of canyoneering sought in southern Cebu towns CEBU CITY, Philippines— The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) will recommend that canyoneering activities in the towns of Alegria and Badian in southern Cebu be suspended starting June 1 until regulations are put in place to ensure public safety. PDRRMO Chief Baltazar Tribunalo Jr. said there is a need to regulate the activity, which is considered extreme sports, in the light of four reported accidents involving tourists in the last two months. READ: Suspension eyed for canyoneering in southern Cebu “There’s no longer any discipline. We need to look at this again carefully, more so because La Niña is threatening to develop. Water in the rivers will rise and we don’t want any deaths so there is a need to revisit policies,” Tribunalo told reporters Wednesday. Tribunalo said a team that he sent to the area to conduct an assessment came up with the recommendation, which will be presented to Gov. Hilario Davide III. He said there has been a proliferation of tour guides who claimed to have undergone training from the provincial government, but actually have not. READ: Canyoneering rules drafted Environmental issues, such as improper waste disposal, should also be addressed, Tribunalo added. He warned that if canyoneering activities persisted in the area, untoward incidents might happen during the rainy season. “If something happens, the barangays (villages) or the local government units (LGUs) will be blamed,” he said. Alegria Mayor Verna Magallon acknowledged the findings of the PDRRMO and said Tribunalo’s recommendation was a “wake-up call.” She said concerned local government units (LGUs) came up with policies regarding canyoneering activities a few months ago but implementation was postponed after tour operators asked for a moratorium during summer to accommodate the visitors. “We are all worried that this lack of discipline will continue. We will abide by the recommendation of the PDRRMO because we know it is for the good of the whole province,” Magallon said. Among the guidelines the local governments intend to impose are the need for tour operators to be recognized or accredited by the municipal or provincial governments, tour guides need to undergo training with the PDRRMO on swift water rescue, and stricter rules are needed on the disposal of garbage in the area. “We are hoping to implement these rules and regulations so that we can maintain the canyoneering area and we can prevent untoward incidents from happening,” the mayor added. 33 Watch Video: Terrified Nilgai rescued near Parliament New Delhi: A 'hyperactive and terrified' Nilgai that caught everyone's attention while running frenzied near Parliament House -- one of the most secured zones of Delhi -- was successfully rescued without using tranquilisers in a four-hour long operation on Thursday. The Asiatic antelope, identified as an adult female, was trapped using rescue nets and was found to be in good health after undergoing checkups in a special animal ambulance of the wildlife conservation organisation Wildlife SOS. "It seems that this Nilgai might have come from the central Ridge area of Delhi, located between Sadar Bazaar and Dhaula Kuan," Suvidha Bhatnagar, Wildlife SOS spokesperson, said. The Ridge, spread over 864 hectares, is home to many Nilgais (Blue Bull). "We avoided using tranquilisers, because in many cases it goes wrong with the hoofed animals. Sometimes they don't recover properly after being tranquilised," said a rescuer. The Nilgai was separated from its herd, which could be another reason for it being scared, making it hard for the rescue team of Wildlife SOS to do their job. "It would be difficult to spot its herd. We'll release it at the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary," said Bhatnagar. The animal was first spotted at around 9.30 a.m. near the fountain at Vijay Chowk, where while running around it hit a police control room vehicle - damaging the vehicle and itself, and almost hit a car. "It was very scared and that's why it ran around. It might have injured or got more scared due to hitting the police car," V. B. Dasan, wildlife inspector from the Delhi Forest Department, told IANS. A team of 10 rescuers from Wildlife SOS, members from Wildlife Trust of India, Delhi Forest Department and Delhi Police caught the Nilgai. He added that the population of Nilgais had also grown, even as they are vulnerable, being killed by farmers. The Nilgais live in the fringe forests. However, due to wide deforestation for farming across many states, especially Uttar Pradesh, they are coming into increasing conflict with humans. According to the rescuers, due to the presence of a crowd and considering the safety of the animal the operation had to be prolonged.

Local, federal officials join fight against rapid ohia death HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A fungus that has killed thousands of native ohia trees on Hawaii’s Big Island has attracted the attention of local and federal government officials, who have been calling for increased efforts to fight the disease. U. S. Sen. Brian Schatz asked U. S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell this week for more federal support in battling the disease known as rapid ohia death, The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1XUV6mp). “If this were a forest fire, we would have no hesitation mobilizing whatever assets and resources were necessary,” he said in a letter to Jewell. The Hawaii senator’s action comes after the state Legislature approved $300,000 to help fund research to stop the fungus. The Hawaii County Council also passed a resolution last week aimed at preventing the disease’s spread through the involvement of various county departments. “This is a significant issue on the Big Island,” said Councilman Greggor Ilagan, D-Puna, who introduced the resolution in order to “really bring (the disease) to a platform.” Ilagan sees the impact of rapid ohia death as extending beyond Hawaii’s native ecosystems. The resolution notes that for Hawaiian cultural practitioners, ohia lehua is a physical manifestation of deities, most notably the goddess of hula, Laka. The fungus has affected than 36,000 acres of native forest. ___ Information from: Hawaii Tribune-Herald, http://www.hawaiitribune- herald.com/

Arrest made in 2014 killing of FSU law professor TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A 34-year-old South Florida man has been arrested in connection with the killing of a well-known Florida State University professor. A statement released by the Tallahassee Police Department early Thursday said Hallandale Beach Police arrested Sigfredo Garcia in South Florida. Police have not yet released additional details about Garcia’s alleged involvement in the killing, but arrest records show Garcia was charged with murder and possession of cocaine. Daniel Markel was shot in the head inside his garage in the middle of the day in July 2014. Markel, who was well-known in legal circles nationally and internationally, died later from the wound. His shooting stunned colleagues as well as residents inside the upscale neighborhood where he lived in Tallahassee. Markel, 41, was born in Toronto. He was the father of two boys and a 2001 graduate of Harvard Law School. He practiced white-collar criminal defense and civil litigation before joining the Florida State law school as a faculty member in 2005. He was tenured in 2010. Markel finalized a contentious divorce from his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, in 2013. The two had split custody of sons Benjamin and Lincoln, but they had follow-up litigation over money settlements. Adelson is program director for the Human Rights and Immigration Law Project at the Center for the Advancement of Human Rights at FSU. Police initially had few leads in the case and eventually circulated pictures of the car believed to have been used by those involved. State arrest records show Garcia has multiple arrests dating back to 1997 including arrests for car theft, cocaine possession, burglary, threatening a witness and a strongarm robbery charge in 2012. Those records show that other charges were filed against him - including possession of an explosive device - but that the charges were dropped. His occupation is listed on his arrest records as a heavy machine operator.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1Z2zjI3 ) that two mechanics with First Student Inc. claimed the company’s buses had threadbare tires, worn brakes and other issues, resulting in safety violations between 2006 and 2011. Attorneys say First Student’s records show 300 violations of inspection requirements over a nine-month period. The San Francisco Unified School District will received $3.5 million of the settlement. The mechanics and their attorneys will receive the rest. First Student representatives could not be reached for comment. The company replaced its 230 San Francisco buses last fall after signing a five- year contract with the school district. ___ Information from: San Francisco Chronicle, http://www.sfgate.com

Failed judicial candidate guilty of forging voter petitions WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to forging voter signatures on nominating petitions so he could succeed his retiring father as a local district judge. Thirty-four-year-old Jared Kane pleaded guilty to forgery, false swearing, and filing nomination petitions with forged signatures. He was immediately sentenced to 18 months’ probation after Wednesday’s plea. Kane’s attorney, Al flora Jr. says Kane cooperated with investigators and simply made a foolish mistake after he misplaced a petition to get on the Republican ballot in last year’s primary. Flora says Kane had enough valid voter signatures on his petition to run as a Democrat, but fudged signatures on the Republican petition he filed. Local judicial candidates often run on both tickets in the primary. Kane lost the election to succeed Wilkes-Barre District Judge Martin Kane.

Murder conviction upheld for Oberlin man NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The state Supreme Court has denied a writ application filed by an Oberlin man convicted in the June 2013 stabbing death of his estranged wife. By denying the writ, the court denied Joseph Vercher’s request that his second-degree murder conviction be vacated and a charge of obstruction of justice be dismissed. The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal last May upheld his conviction and life sentence in the slaying of 34-year-old Rachel Denise Lambert Vercher. Joseph Vercher is also serving 10 years on the obstruction of justice charge. The American Press reports (http://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) an Allen Parish jury convicted Vercher of second-degree murder after a three-day trial in 2014. Vercher was also found guilty of obstruction of justice for removing items from the crime scene, including the victim’s purse and wedding ring and knives. ___ Information from: American Press, http://www.americanpress.com

Attorney speaks on dog breeder’s animal cruelty arrest HONOLULU (AP) - A dog breeder arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after more than 30 dogs were seized from his Kahaluu home and one was found dead no longer wants to be in the breeding business, according to his attorney. James Montgomery was released pending further investigation after his arrest Saturday, which was his second related to animal cruelty. Police and members of the Hawaii Humane Society had found one dog shot dead and another alive but needing medical attention in a trash bin. They described the conditions for the 34 dogs seized from the home as “living in their own filth, with no water and food.” Attorney William Harrison maintains that his client is innocent and “not at fault” for the animals found in the trash. Harrison also defended Montgomery against animal cruelty charges in 2005, when Montgomery pleaded guilty to 55 counts of animal cruelty after more than 60 dogs were seized from the Kahaluu home. A judge’s order allowed the animals to be returned to the home, but Montgomery was instructed to sell them. “The first case was really a problem for him,” Harrison said. “He was a teacher at the time. He got a lot of publicity. His family, his kids at school were being teased. It was a serious offense then. It’s a serious offense now.” Harrison said Montgomery decided after his latest arrest that he does not want to raise or breed dogs anymore and just “wants the dogs to find a good home.” ___ Information from: KHON-TV, http://khon.com

Boat from 19th century found under New Jersey home HIGHLANDS, N. J. (AP) - Workers raising a waterfront home in New Jersey have uncovered a 44-foot wooden boat from the 19th century. The vessel found beneath Eileen Scanlon’s Highlands bungalow is 12 feet wide and was likely used to transport coal and other goods. The boat sat undisturbed until workers on Wednesday started to raise the home to put it on pilings. Scanlon called Russell Card of the Historical Society of Highlands. Cards tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1sRr5bR ) the property was once a dock of sorts and people used to roll boats on wheels to get to and from the water. He believes someone left the boat and built the home around it. The boat will be destroyed, but Scanlon plans to place the bow in her garden. ___ Information from: Asbury Park (N. J.) 49 Austin police to share patrol duties amid staff shortage AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin police say a staff shortage is forcing the department to fill vacancies in patrol shifts with detectives or non-patrol officers for the next 12 months. Officials tell the Austin American-Statesman (http://atxne.ws/1WlKKfY ) the program will pull 500 officers and detectives off their usual assignments for three weeks during the next year to fill empty patrol shifts. Every four months, they will spend a 40-hour workweek performing patrol work. Police leaders say the program, which started last week, is a temporary solution to persistent staff shortages. Assistant Chief Chris McIlvain says, “we are working hard to find a workable solution.” McIlvain says national recruiting efforts to fill vacancies have been affected by a negative public attitude toward police, which has put officers under more scrutiny. ___ Information from: Austin American-Statesman, http://www.statesman.com

Shipbuilding company recalling hundreds of employees NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Newport News shipbuilding company is bringing back hundreds of workers it laid off. Local news outlets report that Newport News Shipbuilding announced Wednesday that it’s recalling 210 employees after the company let them go in February. Company president Matt Mulherin says the recalls are a result of “updated workload manning plans and growth work on several programs.” The recalled employees include sheet-metal workers, painters and those in waterfront support services. The company also recalled 75 employees in April. The 285 workers that have been brought back since then are among the 738 that were let go on Feb. 3. Company officials say the layoffs were due to a drop in the shipyard’s workload.

'World Health Organization condemnation of Israel is anti-Semitism,' says Lapid A World Health Organization resolution stating Israel violates Palestinians’ health rights is “a modern manifestation of anti-Semitism,” Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid wrote to WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan on Thursday. The letter came after the WHO singled out Israel for condemnation, passing a resolution at the UN organization’s annual assembly in Geneva Wednesday against its operating in the area of Palestinian hospitals, and claiming Israel violates health rights in the Golan Heights. The resolution passed 104-4 with six abstentions. As Lapid pointed out, Palestinian terrorists often operate in and around hospitals, like in 2014’s Operation Protective Edge, when the Shifa Hospital in Gaza was used to launch rockets into Israel, targeting civilians. At the same time, Israel set up a field hospital to treat injured Palestinian civilians. “The blame here lies with those who abuse medical facilities and turn them into military facilities. It is Hamas and the Islamic Jihad who should be the focus of your condemnation,” he wrote. In addition, Israel often treats those injured in the Syrian Civil War, bringing them into Israel through the Golan Heights. “Across the border, in Syria, hundreds of thousands have been murdered… Barrel bombs are dropped from the sky on to hospitals and doctors are routinely targeted as part of a campaign to target civilian populations,” Lapid wrote. “While the carnage in Syria has continued unabated and terrorists commit unspeakable atrocities across the region most notably in Iraq, Israel has been quietly working to treat injured Syrians. They are brought to the border, collected by the Israel Defense Force and taken to Israeli hospitals were they are given first rate medical care, at no expense. “These actions are purely humanitarian, just because it’s the right thing to do,” he added. The Yesh Atid accused the WHO of allowing itself “to be used by those who seek to alienate the State of Israel through a campaign of delegitimization. This orchestrated campaign against the sole Jewish state in the world is a modern manifestation of anti-Semitism” “Your organization veered away from its mandate and waded into the campaign to delegitimize Israel. In between important discussions on the Zika Virus, shortages in medical equipment and vaccine action plans, the WHO highlighted Israel…for so called abuses,” Lapid wrote. Lapid urged the WHO to repeal the resolution against Israel as soon as possible, and instead, “focus on combatting real health crises across the world.” Watchdog organization UN Watch went further, and pointed out that the WHO did not debate the health of Yemeni people under Saudi bombardment, where 1,850 were killed, 7,394 wounded and 545,000 displaced, and, in fact the Saudi Arabian representatives denounced Israel at the assembly. “The UN health assembly should single out Israel – as a beacon of humanity,” UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer wrote. “The UN should single out Israel because if you walk into any Israeli hospital or clinic, you will see it replete with Palestinians receiving world-class medical treatment. And this was true even this past summer while Hamas fired thousands of rockets at Israel, and placed their terrorist command center under the Al- Shifa hospital in Gaza, a despicable abuse of health rights unmentioned by the world health assembly.” Neuer listed other Israeli health programs, including “Save a Child’s Heart,” which has performed cardiac surgery 3,400 children from 48 countries, about half of whom are Muslims, and the 260-member team of Israeli medics and search and rescue experts who treated victims of the deadly earthquake in Nepal last year. “So long as the UN instead descends into irrationalism, scapegoating the Jewish state for all the world’s health problems just as medieval Europe accused the Jews of poisoning the wells, the organization betrays the cause of humanity and the noble principles upon which it was founded,” Neuer wrote. The decision targeting only Israel came after 30 health and humanitarian organizations released a report this week citing 19 countries in which attacks destroyed health facilities, killing medical workers and patients, including Colombia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Thailand. The report claimed Israel obstructed medical services for Palestinians. Earlier this week, Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman denounced the Palestinian representative at the WHO for politicizing the assembly after the latter called Israel “a country of occupation [that] harms Palestinian medical institutions in Gaza and elsewhere.” Litzman responded: “The WHO is a professional organization, and I am very disappointed that the Palestinian representative has used this forum for a political attach against my country…The WHO is not a political organization, therefore I will speak on global, regional and Israeli health.” Instead, Litzman talked about the assembly’s theme of “Sustainable Development,” including fighting poverty and inequality, citing his program giving basic dental services for children and mental health reform as successes. Judy Siegel-Itzkovich contributed to this report.

Pakistan: ‘all indicators’ confirm US killed Taliban leader ISLAMABAD (AP) - The foreign affairs adviser to Pakistan’s prime minister said Thursday that “all indicators” confirmed that the former Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed in a U. S. drone strike in the country’s southwestern Baluchistan province, where he was travelling under a false name with fake Pakistani identity documents. At a news conference in the capital, Islamabad, Sartaj Aziz said authorities were awaiting DNA test results, after which Mansour’s body will be handed to his relatives. Aziz’s comments came a day after the Taliban announced that the group’s council of leaders had unanimously selected Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada as its new head following the death of Mansour. During an official visit to Japan Thursday, U. S. President Barack Obama said that he was not optimistic about a change for the better any time soon after the killing of Mansour. “In the short term, we anticipate the Taliban will continue to pursue an agenda of violence,” he said. But Obama added that he was hopeful that eventually there will be more progress “when there are those within the community that surround the Taliban that recognize their goals are best achieved by negotiations.” Obama, speaking at a news conference in Shima, Japan, on the sidelines of a summit of world leaders, said he never expected “a liberal Democrat to be the newly appointed leader of the Taliban. So this continues to be an organization that sees violence as a strategy for obtaining its goals and moving its agenda forward in Afghanistan.” He added: “My hope, although not my expectation, is that there comes a point at which the Taliban recognizes that they are not going to simply be able to overrun the country and that what they need to be doing is to enter into serious reconciliation talks that are led by Afghans. If that happens, that’s something that the United States and others would support. But I am doubtful that that will be happening any time soon and we’ll have to wait and see how those things develop.” Mansour had entered Pakistan from Iran under a false name, with a Pakistani ID card and passport, Aziz said. He refused to elaborate, saying that Pakistani authorities were still investigating the reason for Mansour’s trip to Iran. Pakistani authorities have detained two officials from southwestern Baluchistan who helped Mansour obtain his Pakistani national identity card, the interior ministry said. Aziz condemned the U. S. drone strike, saying it was a “violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty” and said Pakistan had “conveyed our serious concern to the United States on this issue.” The drone attack had “undermined the Afghan peace process,” Aziz said, but he added that he still believed that the way to resolve the Afghanistan’s conflict is through negotiation. “In our view there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan. The use of force for past 15 years has failed to deliver peace,” he said. Pakistani authorities have long been accused by both Kabul and Washington of giving shelter and support to some Taliban leaders - an accusation that Islamabad denies. The insurgents have been fighting to overthrow the Kabul government since 2001, when their own Islamic regime was removed by the U. S. invasion. ____ Associated Press Writer Nancy Benac in Shima, Japan contributed to this report

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson extends contract Christchurch: New Zealand cricket team's head coach Mike Hesson on Thursday extended his contract until after the 2019 World Cup. Batting coach Craig McMillan, manager Mike Sandle and strength and conditioning coach Chris Donaldson also saw their contracts extended. New Zealand are currently ranked No.1 on the International Cricket Council's (ICC) T20 table; No.2 in One Day Internationals, and No.5 in Tests. New Zealand Cricket's chief executive David White was happy to confirm the development. "This is very positive in terms of our succession planning; our preparation for the major events on the horizon and, not least, general team stability," he said in a statement. "It was really important for us to retain the intellectual property and institutional knowledge that these people have developed. " White praised Hesson and lauded the emergence and potential of McMillan, describing Sandle and Donaldson as "leaders in their field". "Mike's the most successful coach in New Zealand cricket history and, in my opinion, the best selector we've ever had," he said. "To have him committed to the Blackcaps until after the next world cup is great news for all concerned. " Hesson said coaching New Zealand was a challenge that still excited and motivated him on a daily basis. "Being around a group which works together and is striving to head in the same direction is extremely rewarding," he said. "It's a privilege to be a part of the Blackcaps culture and I feel lucky to be able to contribute to that for a little bit longer. " New Zealand will next tour southern Africa in July-August - for a couple of Tests against Zimbabwe and South Africa, respectively.

Rahul Dravid will do an incredible job as India coach: Shane Watson New Delhi: Veteran Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has backed batting legend Rahul Dravid to step in as the Indian cricket team's head coach, should the former captain get the cricket board’s nod for the vacant post. "At the starting point, there is no doubt about the quality of person Rahul Dravid is. I was very fortunate to know him well while working with him at Rajasthan Royals (first as the captain) and (later as the) mentor and then learning about his cricketing abilities," Watson told IANS on the phone from Bengaluru on the sidelines of P&G's flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme, P&G Shiksha. Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson (Pics/mid-day, AFP) "There is no doubt that he will do an incredible job if he gets the chance to coach India and also with Virat Kohli who is continuing to grow in this IPL as a leader. He is an incredible man. He has an amazing amount of experience to pass on to the youngsters," added the 34-year-old, who quit international cricket after the 2016 WT20. The top post has been lying vacant for more than a year following the departure of Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher. Ravi Shastri was serving as the director and his contract ended after the conclusion of the World Twenty20 championship held in India in March-April. After the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), the national team has a busy schedule, packed with Test series against the West Indies, New Zealand and England till December. Moreover, calls have grown louder to appoint a proper head coach and Dravid has been heavily rumoured to take the job. He has earned accolades for training Indian Premier League (IPL) sides -- the now-suspended Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils. He has also served as the head coach of the India A and Under-19 sides -- the latter finished runners-up at the World Cup earlier this year. Many, including Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh, have declared that they would like to see Dravid taking one of the most important jobs in world cricket. And Watson, who played under Dravid in Rajasthan, feels that the former right-handed batting star has the necessary attributes to do well with Virat Kolhi as captain in all the three formats - once Dhoni steps down as the limited overs' captain. Dravid had captained Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore in the maiden edition of the IPL in 2008. Watson, who played for Rajasthan from 2008 to 2015, is now working closely with Kohli in this edition of the IPL at RCB, who have reached their third final of the cash-rich tournament. Even though he hasn't had enough batting opportunities due to the success of the top order trio of Kohli, Ab de Villiers and Chris Gayle, he isn't complaining. He has played a crucial part in bowling, with captain Kohli asking him to operate his medium pacers in the death overs. He is on top of the bowlers' chart, picking 20 wickets from 15 games with an economy rate of 8.07. "I am happy with whatever roles I have been assigned at the RCB. My batting hasn't been required too much (due to the success of the top three). Virat chose me at crucial and important times and in the majority of the times it has worked and sometimes, like it happens in Twenty20 cricket, it hasn't worked out exactly according to the plans. " "But I have contributed pretty well in a lot of the games while bowling. I feel great responsibility with Virat calling me to bowl those (crucial) overs. And with my experience, I try to do the best possible job," he added. When Watson, who scored 3,731 runs and took 75 wickets in 59 Tests and played 190 One-Dayers taking 168 wickets and scoring 5,757 runs, decided to retire at the age of 34, many felt it was a pre-mature decision. But the Queenslander feels it was right to quit the game as he plans to do off-field activities alongside playing the Twenty20 tournaments across the world. Moreover, he plans to become a coach. "I feel I still have got a few years of playing, especially these Twenty20 tournaments throughout the world. I would like to play IPL a few more years - - I have always had incredible time over here," said Watson, who was the Player of the Tournament in the 2008 IPL. "I could have played a few more years of international cricket but I have decided to do some off-field initiatives. There are a lot of down-time after the T20 tournament and in this period I would like to study physical education, children education from (learning) the coaching point of view. " "That's why I always say that education is extremely important and a kid, whatever he does (play any sport), should study -- that will help him take the right decisions at the right time and also help in the post-retirement careers," Watson concluded, leaving a message for the youngsters.

Gordhan on 'arrest' threat: 'This isn't a big thing' "I've been asked (by the president) to do a job, so let me do that job," he told the Financial Mail in an exclusive interview this week. His on-and-off war with the SA Police's Hawks unit has been described by some as a clumsy attempt at intimidation tactics and a proxy war between the minister and President Jacob Zuma. Gordhan however said being arrested in connection with the SA Revenue Service "rogue unit" would not be a big deal as he has been through tougher times as a political activist. "When you're picked up at 4am, hands cuffed behind your back and told to pack some clothes, in a country where you have no rights, that's difficult. I've had handcuffs on my wrists many times, so this isn't a big thing," said Gordhan. Gordhan received "credible information" that he could be arrested just as he was about to fly to Rwanda for the World Economic Forum two weeks ago. Then with that threat hanging over him, he was immediately pressed into meetings with Standard & Poor's and Fitch to convince them not to downgrade SA’s credit rating to junk status. A team from S&P met officials last week before their review due to be published on June 3, which could see the country's debt rating cut to junk. Read the full exclusive interview with Gordhan here.

60 In Gawker fight, Hogan has billionaire in his corner ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Hulk Hogan’s courtroom cage match with Gawker has apparently been bankrolled by a high-tech billionaire with a grudge against the news- and-gossip site. Two months after Hogan won a $140 million invasion-of- privacy verdict against Gawker for posting a sex tape of him, news reports say the pro wrestler is secretly backed by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Thiel, who co-founded PayPal and was an early investor in Facebook, was outed as gay by a Gawker-owned website in 2007, and the Gawker empire has run a number of stories skewering Facebook. The article about him and other articles about his friends that he said “ruined people’s lives for no reason” spurred Thiel to help fund “victims” of Gawker, he told The New York Times. “It’s less about revenge and more about specific deterrence,” he told the newspaper Wednesday. “I saw Gawker pioneer a unique and incredibly damaging way of getting attention by bullying people even when there was no connection with the public interest.” In the interview, Thiel also said Hogan’s lawsuit is one of several against Gawker he has financially backed. Legal experts say there is nothing illegal - or even unethical - about someone financing a lawsuit. There are entire companies that invest in contingency claims, usually in product liability, personal injury, patent infringement and copyright cases. It is called “litigation financing.” But a billionaire doing it out of what may be spite? That’s a little different, experts say. “As much as this is not at all illegal or unethical, it just smells and feels wrong,” said Scott Greenfield, a New York lawyer who is managing editor of Fault Lines, an online legal magazine. “When a rich guy can basically afford to bring down a media outlet, that has horrible social ramifications, even if the particular outfit is one that everybody hates, like Gawker.” On Wednesday, Hogan and Gawker were back in a Florida court, where Judge Pamela Campbell denied Gawker’s request for a new trial and refused to reduce the damages. Gawker vows to take the case to an appeals court. Thiel, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $2.7 billion, didn’t immediately respond to interview requests made through email or on the voicemail of a mobile phone number he previously provided to an Associated Press reporter. Hogan’s lawyers wouldn’t comment on the Thiel story but praised the judge for denying a new trial and accused Gawker of refusing to accept responsibility for “their reprehensible behavior and method of doing what they call journalism.” Gawker reacted to the reports by saying: “There are very serious questions about whether Hulk Hogan financially benefited, and this case is far from over.” Thiel has never hidden his contempt for Valleywag, a gossip site that Gawker periodically ran during the past decade to expose the secrets of Silicon Valley moguls, sometimes in salacious fashion. In a 2009 interview, Thiel called Valleywag “the Silicon Valley equivalent of al-Qaida” and said it relies on people who “should be described as terrorists, not as writers or reporters.” Story Continues →

1 dead, 1 critical but stable in NYC concert shooting NEW YORK (AP) - Shots rang out inside a concert venue in New York City where hip-hop artist T. I. was getting ready to perform, leaving one person dead, three others wounded and concertgoers scrambling for the nearest exits, police said. One of the victims was in critical but stable condition on Thursday. No arrests have been made, and a motive for the shooting is unclear. The shooting happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in a third-floor green room area at Irving Plaza, near Manhattan’s Union Square. It was not immediately known who had access to that area. Witnesses described a frantic, frightening scene. Live Hoffman, 19, was in the balcony VIP area to the left of the stage when the shooting happened. She said there had been some kind of argument between two groups of people before the shooting. A woman she had been talking to was one of the victims. “The girl next to me was shot point blank, and men picked her up and carried her out,” Hoffman told The Associated Press, still shaken by the events that unfolded right in front of her. “For two to three minutes we still heard firing, still heard shots, we were clutching each other making sure no one was getting hit.” Video shot inside the venue showed concertgoers rushing to the sides trying to leave the area as a group of people tended to a person on the floor. “I ran out, just trying to look for my friends, just trying to see if everyone was OK. Everyone was hysterical,” Hoffman said. Manhattan Chief of Detectives William Aubry said a 33-year-old man was shot in the stomach and died at a hospital. A 34-year-old man was in critical but stable condition with a chest wound. A 26-year-old woman and a 30- year-old man with leg wounds were expected to survive. Elijah Rodriguez was in the VIP area by the stage and said that T. I. was supposed to go on at 9 or 9:30 p.m., but “he never showed up.” Aubry said T. I. was in the building, but performers Maino and Uncle Murda were on stage at the time of the shooting. “It was scary to deal with. When I got outside, like literally across the street, there were a few girls having, like, panic attacks. One girl thought she saw someone get shot in front of her,” Rodriguez said. Police said metal detectors were set up at Irving Plaza, a 1,025-person ballroom-style music venue. Witnesses said security getting into the concert was lax. Police say there was security in place, but how it was carried out is part of the investigation. Irving Plaza is referring questions about the incident to police. Story Continues →

Pirates have cup mojo on their side Twice a winner of this competition, Myeni is banking on his experience to make it three victories when Pirates meet Supersport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium. He first won it as a 21-year-old at Bidvest Wits in 2010 and four years later inflicted pain on the Clever Boys when he scored for Pirates in a 3-1 victory at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Myeni is ready to help Bucs lift a third Nedbank Cup in five years. "I have good memories of playing in this competition. In 2010, when I was at Wits, we were privileged to be the first ones to play at FNB Stadium and we won it," said Myeni. "Hopefully I will get another goal in the final. " He added: "This cup has been good to me. I have scored goals at crucial times. The last time I played in a knockout competition (in 2014), I did not score until we got to the final. " United beat Pirates in the last 16 of the competition at Peter Mokaba Stadium last season and beat them again at the same venue when they met in the league early this season. United might have an advantage at a venue they use as an alternative to Lucas Moripe Stadium, but Myeni said he wasn't fussed. Supersport striker Jeremy Brockie received a "massive confidence booster" after a late call-up to the "All Whites" squad to play in the Oceania Nations Cup starting on Saturday. It added to an already great week for the 28-year-old, who has scored 27 goals in 51 starts for Matsatsantsa since joining in December 2014, after he was nominated for the Nedbank Cup's top individual award. Brockie said he desperately wants the trophy for the team. "It is nice to be nominated as one of the top three players in the Nedbank [Cup] so far. My main aim is winning the trophy first before any personal accolade. "

Donald Trump’s former 2016 GOP rivals defend Susana Martinez after Trump’s criticism Former rivals of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump are defending New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez after Mr. Trump said at a rally in Albuquerque this week that Ms. Martinez has to do a better job. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, vice chair of the Republican Governors Association, said in a statement through the RGA that Ms. Martinez has delivered crucial tax reform, sued the EPA for federal overreach, and turned a deficit into a surplus. “Governor Susana Martinez has effectively driven conservative reforms in a blue state won twice by President Obama, while winning re-election by the largest margin by a Republican in state history,” said Mr. Walker, a former 2016 GOP presidential candidate. “Governor Martinez also has a dedicated record of helping elect conservative governors across the country, and as RGA chair this year, she is leading the charge in several states that are in dire need of real leadership, just like she has provided in New Mexico,” Mr. Walker said. Mr. Walker’s statement did not mention Mr. Trump, but it came after an event earlier this week where Mr. Trump said Ms. Martinez has to do a better job. “We have to get your governor to get going - she’s got to do a better job, OK?” Mr. Trump said at a rally in New Mexico on Tuesday. “Your governor has got to do a better job.” Ms. Martinez, the country’s first elected Hispanic female governor, downplayed Mr. Trump’s comments and chalked them up to politics. “It’s politics,” she told reporters. “It really is - it’s just politics. It doesn’t bother me what he says.” Ohio Gov. John Kasich, also a former 2016 GOP candidate, did allude to the party’s “nominee” in defending Ms. Martinez on social media. “.@Gov_Martinez is an outstanding governor who has brought conservative reform to a blue state,” Mr. Kasich tweeted Wednesday. “She’s exactly who our party & nominee should be lifting up and supporting, not tearing down.” And former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush tweeted Wednesday: “Politicians talk. Governors lead. @Gov_Martinez is a leader and the future of our party.” Sen. Marco Rubio, another former 2016 GOP contender, also tweeted Wednesday: “The truth is @ Gov_Martinez is one of the hardest working and most effective Governors in America.”

Gun supporters claim Katie Couric documentary deceptive WASHINGTON (AP) - Gun rights activists featured in a new documentary on the issue hosted by Katie Couric say it utilizes deceptive editing to misrepresent their response to a question from the news anchor. Members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League took part in a roundtable discussion in the film, “Under the Gun.” A clip appears to show nearly 10 seconds of silence after Couric asks them, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?” Audio released to the Washington Free Beacon reveals members immediately answering a similar question posed by Couric. Director Stephanie Soechtig tells The Washington Post the pause was so viewers could consider the question. Couric says she supports the statement and is “very proud of the film.”

IOC expresses concern over investigation into Tokyo 2020 bid TOKYO (AP) - IOC vice president John Coates expressed concern Thursday over payments made to a Singapore firm which have entangled Tokyo’s winning bid for the 2020 Olympics in a bribery investigation. Leaders of Tokyo’s bid have admitted making payments of 2.8 million Singapore dollars ($2 million) to a Singaporean firm headed by Ian Tan Tong Han, a close associate of Papa Massata Diack, the son of former IAAF President Lamine Diack, who is facing corruption charges in France. French prosecutors are looking into the payments as part of an investigation of Diack. The Japanese Olympic Committee is also investigating the matter. The allegations of bribery have shocked many in Japan. “We share the same concerns as the Japanese public does about corruption,” said Coates, who heads the IOC’s coordination commission for the Tokyo Games. “I think that should be clear from our president (Thomas) Bach and the executive board’s zero tolerance approach whether it’s in regard to doping or corruption in the bidding process.” JOC president Tsunekazu Takeda, who headed Tokyo’s bid team, insists the payment was for legitimate consultancy work and not made with the anticipation that the money would lead to Diack. The allegations of bribery are the latest blemish on Tokyo’s preparations for the 2020 Games. Tokyo defeated Istanbul 60-36 in the final round of the IOC voting. Madrid was eliminated on the first ballot. The JOC has set up a three-man investigation team probing whether there were illegal payments. The team met for the first time on Thursday. Takeda “assured me the JOC has a full open book and the IOC looks forward to the report of that investigation,” Coates said. In testimony at Japan’s parliament, Takeda did not reveal who in the bid committee met with Tan to broker the deal in the months leading up to Tokyo’s victory in September 2013. Possible wrongdoing involving Lamine Diack and the 2020 Olympic bid race was cited in a WADA-commissioned investigation of the IAAF. A footnote to a report by the WADA commission in January indicated that Diack was prepared to sell his vote in exchange for $5 million in sponsorship for the IAAF. The report suggested that Diack dropped his support for Istanbul’s bid because Turkey refused to pay, and also indicated that the Japanese did pay. The head of Tokyo’s organizing committee said the problem predates their existence. “The organizing committee is not the bid committee,” Yoshiro Mori said. “The bid committee was awarded the Tokyo games and after that the organizing committee was established and we are working with the IOC for the successful delivery of the games.” Story Continues →

Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders eye debate before CA primary Sen. Bernard Sanders won’t be debating Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton in California ahead of the June 7 primary - but it appears a one-on-one debate with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump could be in the works. In an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that aired Wednesday, Mr. Trump was asked if he’d be prepared to debate Mr. Sanders before the California primary since Mrs. Clinton would not. “Yes I am - how much is he going to pay me?” Mr. Trump said. “If I debated him, we would have such high ratings and I think I should…take that money and give it to some worthy charity, OK?” Mr. Trump said he would “love” to do it if money went to charity. Early Thursday, Mr. Sanders appeared to accept the offer, tweeting: “Game on. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7 primary.” Mr. Kimmel said he was asking Mr. Trump the question on behalf of Mr. Sanders , since the Vermont senator was scheduled to be on the show later in the week.

Moroccans refuse to play Israel in wheelchair tennis World Cup Politics reared its ugly head in sports once more on Thursday, this time at the World Team Cup wheelchair tennis event at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo. Israel was scheduled to face Morocco in a Men's World Group 2 tie for positions 5-8, but the Moroccans never showed it, being ordered to do so by their local paralympic committee. "This is a sad day for sports, and an even sadder day for paralympic sports," said Israel coach Nimrod Bichler. "Politics have mixed with sports in the past, but paralympic sports were always different. " Israel's team, which includes Amir Levi, Adam Berdichevsky and Asi Stokol, was awarded a default 3-0 victory. A total of 51 teams from 29 countries are competing in Tokyo in four categories: men, women, quad and junior. Israel began the tournament in Pool D, beating Hungary but losing to Malaysia, which showed up for the tie despite the lack of diplomatic relations between the countries. Israel finished the group in second place to progress to the playoff for 5-8 positions. Israel will face Poland for fifth place on Friday. The World Team Cup, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, is the ITF’s flagship wheelchair tennis event, often referred to as the Davis and Fed Cups of wheelchair tennis. The initial event took place in California in 1985 involving six men's teams. The women’s competition began the following year, with quad and junior events introduced in 1998 and 2000, respectively. Due to the increased number of teams wanting to take part, the ITF introduced regional qualifying for the men's and women's events in 2012.

Thirty-five-year-old Tyler Porter is charged in federal court with stealing and possessing explosives and two weapons counts. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says in an affidavit that a confidential informant tipped off authorities. Authorities haven’t speculated on what Porter allegedly intended to do with the explosives. Porter has a criminal history in North Dakota and South Carolina and could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

71 Poll: Almost half of Israeli Jews don't want Arabs teaching their kids Nearly half of Israeli Jewish parents say they do not want Arab teachers instructing their children in school, a new poll conducted in Israel showed. According to the survey done by Ma'agar Mochot on behalf of the Gordon College of Education, the number is substantially higher among Jews who are more religiously observant. The poll showed that 82 percent of religious Jews oppose having an Arab teach their kids. The survey also found that one-third of parents say that if an Arab were to teach their children, they would prefer a Christian rather than a Muslim. Israel Radio quoted the president of Gordon College, Prof. Yecheskel Taler, as saying that since the Israeli education system runs two separate streams for Jewish and Arab pupils, the integration of Arab teachers into Jewish classrooms could serve as a bridge between the two populations. The figures are the latest manifestation of burgeoning racism in Israeli society. In March, a study by the Pew Research Center showed that almost half of Jewish Israelis favor expelling Arab Israelis from the country. As is the case with many other societal issues, they are deeply divided along levels of religiosity, the report showed. The survey divided Israeli Jewish society into four large sub-sectors: secular, traditional, religious-Zionist and haredi (ultra-Orthodox), and also looked at religious and societal sentiment in the non-Jewish population. It was conducted by face-to-face interviews in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian among 5,601 Israeli adults 18 and older from October 2014 through May 2015. Some 48 percent of Jewish Israelis polled agreed with the statement that “Arabs should be expelled or transferred from Israel,” though the percentage ranged from 54% to 71% for those defining themselves as ultra-Orthodox, religious or traditional; and only about 36% of the secular community felt that way. Opinion on this also was split decisively on political lines, with 87% of the ideologically left opposing expulsion or transfer, 54% of centrists against it, 37% of centrist supporting transfer, and 72% of the ideologically right in favor. The report pointed out, however, that its question had simply stated “Arabs” and not specified if they were citizens or not. It also noted that in response to a question from the University of Haifa’s Index of Arab-Jewish Relations in 2015, 32% of Israeli Jews agreed to some extent that “Arab citizens should leave the country and receive proper compensation,” with 64% opposed. Jeremy Sharon contributed to this report.

9 tongue-in-cheek parenting tips 1) Parenting is the art of distraction. Learn to distract your kids as soon as it looks like something may go wrong, or even after it has gone wrong. This helps avoid tantrums and tears. However, if your child is actually injured, don’t show them their favourite toy or offer them ice-cream, take them to a doctor. 2) When changing nappies, make sure the business end is covered at all times. Babies like to build up pressure, which they release as soon as there is nothing covering their backside. 3) Put a bath mat on the floor next to the changing station for all those times you forget to cover the business end. It is much easier than cleaning the carpet. 4) Practice pretending to be in a really deep sleep. This will hopefully result in your partner doing the 2am nappy change and feed. 5) If you want to read books on parenting, do it during pregnancy. Once the child is born, you’ll be too sleepy. 6) Once you’ve read books on parenting, take a moment to accept that your child didn’t read the same books. 7) If you are a sports fan, indoctrinate your children early. Make sure they enjoy watching football or rugby, even if it means feeding them chocolate during matches for positive reinforcement. This way you don’t have to argue when a game is on at the same time as Paw Patrol. 8) During “suicide hour”, feed your child chocolate or other sugary treats, ensuring a sugar-high and crash at bed time, making your life much easier. 9) Most importantly: Don’t take any of these tips or anyone else’s tips too seriously. Trust yourself; you know what’s best for your child. Forrest's one-man show Who’s Your Daddy? runs from May 31 to June 18 at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square in Sandton.

Modi govt a failure on many fronts, says Shiv Sena on anniversary As the Narendra Modi government completed two years in office, ally Shiv Sena today hit out at the BJP-led dispensation over a host of issues, alleging it failed to rein in inflation, curb cross border terrorism and the schemes started during this period did not reach people. Sena also took a dig at the Prime Minister over his frequent foreign trips, saying he has to first decide if his residence was within the country or outside. While there were no big corruption scandals in the last two years, the government "failed" to arrest inflation and bring solace to people reeling under the impact of price rise and end distress in farm sector, the party said. "Modi government started one scheme after the other in two years. But people barely know of any (schemes). The previous government was running the same schemes with different names which eventually got embroiled in corruption," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said. "Modi first has to decide whether his residence is inside or outside the country," it said referring to the Prime Minister's engagements abroad. The partner also criticised the government over the issue of retrieving black money stashed in foreign banks, citing it as one of the tall poll promises which were not honoured. Modi had promised that he would get back black money and deposit lakhs of rupees in every individual's account from foreign banks but two years on, the promise remains unfulfilled, it said. It also attacked the government over holding talks with Pakistan and unabated terror activities from across the border. "Terrorist activities by Pakistanis in Kashmir has not stopped. Our jawans are dying fighting Naxalites and terrorists. We are still talking with the neighbouring country," it said. Taking a jibe at the NDA over its poor performance in some recent state polls, the Shiv Sena said taking stock of the work of the Modi government at this juncture is unnecessary because people of Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already evaluated it in their own independent way.

FB helps cops nab two Mumbai men for sparking tension in Bhopal Officers from Mumbai Crime Branch Unit-IX and a special investigating team (SIT) of Bhopal police arrested two persons in the city last week for posting and sharing offensive images of Hindu deities and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook. The uploads — posted in the first week of May — created a furore in Gautam Nagar and Hanuman Ganj areas of Bhopal after local Hindu outfits threatened massive protests if the miscreants were not brought to book at the earliest. Ali Sheikh (in shorts) and Abdul Qureshi (to his left) after being taken into custody by the Bhopal police’s SIT team Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) KMM Prasanna said, “The Bhopal police sought our help to nab the miscreants. Officers from Crime Branch Unit-IX investigated the case and cracked it within no time. The accused are now in the custody of the Bhopal police SIT.” The accused were identified as Antop Hill residents Ali Hassan Sheikh (32) and Abdul Qayyum Qureshi (31). While Sheikh works as a bodyguard for a builder, Qureshi owns an electronic goods shop. Inspector Jitendra Pathak from Hanuman Ganj police station, Bhopal, told mid-day over the phone, “An FIR was registered against two persons on May 10 for uploading objectionable images of Hindu deities and PM Modi on a Facebook group called Naadan Parinde. This created tension in the area, following which an SIT was formed to solve the case. A few local Hindu outfits warned of massive protests and closure of all temples in the area if the miscreants weren’t nabbed soon. While Sheikh uploaded the images, Qureshi shared them with obscene comments. Both are currently in judicial custody.” A case was registered under sections 291 (continuance of nuisance after injunction to discontinue) and 295 (injuring or defiling a place of worship with the intent to insult the religion of any class) of the IPC against the duo. “We scrutinised their Facebook profiles and came across a few selfies — one with a high-end car. Investigation revealed that the vehicle belonged to Red Chillies Entertainment. This gave us a hint that they could be employees of this production house and our team left for Mumbai.” Breakthrough Commenting on the joint operation, Mahesh Desai, senior inspector from Unit-IX, said investigation from their end revealed that none of the accused worked for the said production house. “While scanning their friends’ lists, we discovered that Sheikh was friends with a police constable, Anand Rajput of Local Arms Unit-II. In his profile picture, the constable was standing in front of Mumbai police’s Force One building located in Kalina. We immediately despatched a team and brought Rajput to our Bandra office,” he added. During questioning, Rajput refused to acknowledge Sheikh as his friend, saying the only reason Sheikh was on his friend’s list was because they shared a common interest in bodybuilding. The police then devised a plan to trap Sheikh. A police officer said, “Rajput was asked to send a message to Sheikh on Facebook, asking him to share tips on building a physique like his, and whether he would be okay with sharing his diet and workout regime with him. Once Sheikh shared his number with Rajput, he was nabbed from Antop Hill, followed by Qureshi. The two were arrested on May 19.”

The city, while by far the country’s most racially integrated, has seen an influx of blacks moving in, with whites increasingly choosing to move into secure estates. • The emerging black middle class is fast breaking the mould of the former white apartheid upmarket suburbs of Morningside, Houghton and Sandton. • Blacks from across Africa are diluting the racial groupings of all the city’s suburbs. • Jobs in government departments in the city are driving blacks to move into the CBD. 78 Watch: Aerial footage shows inequality in Cape Town suburbs The videos are part of a series Miller launched to highlight inequality in South Africa. On his facebook page he writes, "The beauty of being able to fly is to see things as they really are. Looking straight down from a height of several hundred meters, incredible scenes of inequality emerge. Some communities have been expressly designed with separation in mind, and some have grown more or less organically. 80 Male doctor helps Saudi woman deliver baby - and is then shot by husband A Jordanian doctor who helped deliver a baby at a Saudi hospital was shot by the woman's husband who was angry that a male obstetrician tended to his wife, according to a report in the London-based Al-Araby newspaper. Dr. Mohannad al-Zubn helped a woman give birth in the King Fahd Medical City in the Saudi capital of Riyadh last month. According to Al-Araby , the father went to the hospital in order to "thank" the doctor, only to pull out a gun and shoot him at close range. The doctor's wounds appear to be non-life threatening. The shooter was soon after arrested by the authorities. "The husband came to the hospital looking for the doctor and shot him in the chest in an attempt to kill him for helping his wife deliver a baby," said a hospital spokesperson. Saudi Arabia, the desert kingdom governed by an austere form of Islam, is said to enforce strict gender segregation in public places. Some Saudis on social media expressed support for the husband. "The mixing of men and women in hospitals and other places leads to corruption and vices such as exchanging looks, breakdowns in barriers between men and women, and unethical relationships forbidden in Islam," Arab News reported one Saudi social media user who identified herself as a woman.

83 Fraud accused S'bu Ndebele still SA's high commissioner to Australia - government The department made this comment in reaction to a report in the Sowetan on Wednesday‚ which indicated that Ndebele had been recalled from his diplomatic posting. Ndebele‚ the former transport minister‚ appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in December on a charge of corruption related to the awarding of the eNaTIS contract. Ndebele was granted bail of R10‚000 and the case was postponed until July 20‚ when he will join four other men and four companies also accused in the case when it continues in Pretoria. His name came up in an application by the transport department to set aside the eNatis contract that was awarded to Tasima in 2010. In its heads of argument filed with the court‚ the transport department said Ndebele "was most recently recalled as a result of the indictment". “On 15 December 2015 the erstwhile Minister of Transport (having been recalled from Canberra) was similarly charged in Durban‚” the heads of argument filed by the transport department read. This was denied by Dirco on Thursday‚ which stated: "The Department wishes to place it on record that High Commissioner Ndebele remains in his position and that he is performing his official duties as Head of Mission in the Australian capital‚ Canberra. " When the matter was heard on Tuesday‚ Clayson Monyela‚ International Relations and Cooperation Department spokesman‚ would not confirm nor deny his recall. "You're saying another department has revealed [Ndebele's recalling] in court papers‚ [so] why are you coming to us? Quote what the court document[s] say‚" he told Sowetan.

84 Cops: We can't cope With local-government elections approaching, a leading criminologist says the outlook is ominous. Public order policing has been under the microscope since the killing of 34 miners at Marikana in 2012. Municipal IQ told The Times that 86% of the protests listed on its Hotspots Monitor were characterised by violence. Police management yesterday conceded in parliament that the service did not have enough public order officers to deal with protests. In 2014 the police asked for an additional R3.3-billion to increase public order policing numbers and equipment but the Treasury turned them down. It has been announced that R598-million will be spent on public order policing over the next three years. Testifying before parliament's police portfolio committee, deputy national police commissioner Fannie Masemola said 11 unrest hotspots had recently been identified. Masemola said more than 600 public order police officers had been deployed to the hotspots. Some of the violence has been staged for political reasons, it has been alleged. Masemola said police will be deployed in the hot spots until after the elections. But, he said, resources were stretched. Institute for Security Studies policing researcher Johan Burger said the solution was not in the hands of the police. He said police statistics showed that violence in protests had risen by 274% in the past decade. Burger said compounding the police's public order policing problems were decisions taken by former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi in 2006. Selebi, he said, had reduced the number of public order police officers from 7,500 to 2,500. "The numbers have been increased to 4700 but are far from what is needed. "In 2014 the police said that by 2018 the number will be increased to 9,000 members but this process hasn't started properly. " Burger said another big problem was that the violence was often driven by conditions and factors beyond the control of the police. He said those protesting at poor service delivery often had genuine reasons for their grievances. "People become violent because they believe it's the only way to attract attention to their concerns. "The police are the visible presence of a failing government. "

In image-conscious Dubai, even police patrol in luxury cars DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Image is everything in Dubai - even when fighting crime. Police in this desert metropolis have built up a high- horsepower arsenal of luxury sports cars and SUVs over the years to complement their fleet of green-and-white patrol cruisers. The high-end squad cars fit into the greater gearhead ethos of Dubai, where fire-engine red Ferraris growl at stoplights and convertible Rolls Royces prowl the boulevard ringing the world’s tallest building. Lamborghinis also glisten through the glass of a massive new showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, the country’s longest thoroughfare that is a dozen lanes at its widest when cutting through Dubai. But don’t expect their Lamborghini Aventador to show up if you rear-end someone. These police cars don’t see duty at traffic accidents or engage in high- speed pursuits, said Dubai police Lt. Saif Sultan Rashed al-Shamsi, who oversees the tourist police’s patrol section. Instead, al-Shamsi said the cars appear for special events across Dubai - or cruise areas frequented by tourists, offering visitors a glamorous image of the Dubai police. That also is a way for the city-state’s police force to be more accessible and welcomed by the public in a country home to a huge foreign workforce, al-Shamsi said. “One of the funny stories we have is that a lot of tourists and people here call the Dubai police … on (the emergency number) 999 to ask about these cars,” al-Shamsi said. “They want to know which location they will be in and how they can find them and take pictures with them.” Their photogenic qualities came out in force on a recent day as officers parked several outside the Armani Hotel in the 828-meter (2,717-foot) Burj Khalifa. The twin scissor doors of the police’s BMW i8 swung open like wings on the $140,000 car, which flies to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The car’s license plate read 2020, a nod to Dubai hosting 2020 World Expo, a world’s fair held every five years. Along for the ride were a two-door Bentley Continental and a Nissan GTR, its license plate the same as Dubai’s police emergency number and the plastic wrap still around its backseat. Tim Dean, a 24-year-old tourist from St. Petersburg, Florida, used to the Ford Crown Victoria police cars on the streets of the United States, stopped to snap a quick photograph of the assembled exotic vehicles. “You don’t see many cop cars like this,” Dean said. That’s true, especially as the force’s vehicles also include brands like Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Ferrari. Story Continues →

Repo man’s attempt to take car leads to deadly Utah chase SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The repossession agent showed up around midnight to a cul-de-sac in a small Utah city, his girlfriend a passenger in his company tow truck. As he backed up to a driveway to take back an SUV belonging to a woman who had fallen behind on a title loan, her husband came outside to intervene. An argument ensued. A gentleman’s agreement was made. But when the woman fled in her car, breaking the agreement, the angry repo man sped after to start what prosecutors describe as a high-speed, reckless chase through the streets of Pleasant Grove, Utah. It ended tragically, authorities say, when the repo agent’s tow truck forced the woman’s car off the road and her 2002 Lincoln Navigator smashed into a tree, killing her. The repossession agent, Kenneth Drew, 49, made his first court appearance Wednesday in Provo after being charged with manslaughter. His attorney Loni DeLand declined comment. The deceased, Ashleigh Best, 35, leaves behind two children. Police say the family had recently moved to Utah to improve their financial stability. A phone listing for the Best family couldn’t be found. Drew told investigators he was just following Best on May 17 to keep an eye on the SUV, charging documents show. Investigators, however, say evidence, including pictures and GPS data from the tow truck, show Drew’s story doesn’t match what happened. “He was chasing Mrs. Best recklessly and the inconsistencies in his account indicate that he was aware of wrongdoing and trying to mitigate his liability,” prosecutors wrote in the charging documents. In charging documents, prosecutors paint a picture of an intense encounter that escalated quickly. After the initial argument between Drew and Brennen Best, the woman’s husband, Drew agreed to leave the SUV alone and allow the couple time to go update their payments and come back to show him proof, charging documents show. But instead, Brennen Best instructed his wife to take her car to her mother’s house. As Ashleigh Best drove around the tow truck, a neighbor’s security camera shows Drew trying to box Best in against a curb as both cars accelerated. A neighbor reported hearing raised voices and cars peeling out. Ashleigh Best escaped, and the pursuit began. Later in the chase, prosecutors say Drew drove alongside Best’s SUV, grinding his rear right tire into her door. Going faster than 50 mph, Best jumped a curb and smashed into a tree. She died a short time later. Drew initially told investigators he didn’t force her off the road, but that she sped past him, fish-tailed and hit the tree. Confronted with evidence investigators had gathered, Drew later said he may have used his truck to try and end the chase and said he didn’t really remember how the crash occurred. His girlfriend said she wasn’t sure if he meant to run Ashleigh Best off the road, but said she was scared throughout the chase. Police say it’s illegal for repo men to use force to reclaim vehicles.

Lonavla to host international film festival in September New Delhi: In September, the picturesque hill station of Lonavla, a little over 80 km from Mumbai, will host its first international film festival, where veteran filmmaker Govind Nihalani will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The fest is not just an attempt to boost tourism in the area, but also to develop a film-viewing culture. The Lonavla International Film Festival India (LIFFI), to be held September 1-5, will showcase the works of student, independent and established filmmakers with fresh ideas, concepts and styles. "LIFFI is the first ever film festival being hosted in Lonavla. Having been actively involved with eminent cinema directors, I felt that it is my duty to nourish the art of cinema and keep it going ahead by way of promoting through the fest, which is striding to bring the world cinema to the hill station," Riju Bajaj, the festival director, told. It is during his stay in Lonavla since the past five years that Bajaj stumbled upon the idea of launching a film festival, which he felt was perfect for the place considering that it is "fast emerging as a compact smart city in its own way". "Having advantages of being in between Mumbai and Pune, it enjoys access from the airports and railway stations of both the cities. Lonavla is among the best and busiest holiday destinations in Maharashtra and gets maximum footfall of tourists on weekends,” he said. "These very tourists are, in fact, art lovers and film buffs, and make the best audience," Bajaj shared, adding how Lonavla has been a writer's paradise too. "I have wanted to host a film festival since a long time and having found a perfect partner in Mr. Madhav Todi, owner of Triose Plaza, a multiplex, the idea became a reality," he said. Names like Shyam Benegal, Naseeruddin Shah, Ketan Mehta, Sudhir Mishra and Hansal Mehta are coming forward to support the event. The opening ceremony will see Benegal present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Nihalani, known for his socially relevant films like 'Aakrosh' and 'Ardh Satya'. Benegal, in a conversation with IANS, said: "A festival in Lonavla is a wonderful thing because people living in smaller places don't get the opportunity to see films outside of what is released in commercial cinema. So, they get to look at films from all over the world.” "Clearly, 90 percent or more of the films that will be shown at the fest are not likely to be brought to a place like Lonavla ever. So, that is a huge kind of a plus point for people who live there. " Even Naseeruddin is 'all for the idea of a film festival in Lonavla', where access to world cinema is difficult, he said. While he feels it's a 'courageous' move on the part of the organisers, the actor even praised the idea of honouring Nihalani, who, he feels is a 'great' part of Indian cinema. "It will be wonderful to be there at the fest to applaud him for the achievement," Naseeruddin told IANS. For LIFFI, the paid submission/entry for feature films, short films and also short web films in all Indian and foreign languages, opened from May 4. Entries can come in till July 15. The selection panel will choose the best films to be considered for awards and screening, and then forward them to the panel of jury. The jury will then review the film for awards to be announced on September 5. Awards will be given under various categories, and the categories will increase with every year along with the response and success of the event.

Waller Co. Commissioner Barnett survives Democratic primary runoff Waller County Commissioner Jeron Barnett has staved off a challenge in a Democratic primary runoff from Darryl Johnson, a lobbyist. Barnett represents Precinct 3, which includes Prairie View A&M University, a historically black school. Leading up to the March primary, the commissioner was embroiled in a debate over whether to put an early voting polling place in the school's student center. Though he fell far short of Johnson in the March results, failing in particular to win votes from students , Barnett came out ahead of two other contenders on the ballot. Complete but unofficial results Tuesday show that Barnett, who is the only black and only Democrat on the commissioners court, pulled ahead of Johnson by a safe margin in the runoff Tuesday. Barnett has held the seat since 2012. Barnett, who did not respond immediately to a request for comment, will face Republican Marvin R. Hood in the November general election. Hood was uncontested in the GOP primary in March. Johnson said he hopes the candidate who wins will understand the position should not be taken for granted. He noted that Prairie View A&M had let out for summer by Election Day for the runoff and said it was important that the constituents are adequately represented. "If you're not going to fight for Precinct 3, somebody's going to fight against you," Johnson said. Johnson said he would keep an eye on whomever wins. Republican voters in March nominated Marvin Hood for the Precinct 3 commissioner's seat. "I'm going to hold whomever is elected accountable to doing the right thing," he said. "If they're doing the right thing, I'm going to support them 100 percent. If they're not, I'm going to sing to high heaven. "

FIND MORE NEWS Archives Categories Bishop Eddie Long, whose ministry was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal, was interviewed Wednesday by Steve Harvey. People reacted quickly to the interview on social media sites, including Twitter. Here’s what a few of them had to say: Long, senior pastor, of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, was sued by in 2010 by Anthony Flagg, Spencer LeGrande, Jamal Parris and Maurice Robinson, who alleged the bishop used his influence, trips, gifts and jobs to coerce them into sexual relations. In 2011, the case was settled, then dismissed. Long declined to answer specific questions about the case, citing terms of the settlement. When the case first broke, Long said he felt like he was in a chess game. He wanted to say more to his congregation but was advised not to by lawyers and others. Harvey made it clear that he knew Long before the scandal. When he first moved to Atlanta, New Birth was the first church he visited. He said it was hard to wrap his head around the allegations against Long. The timing is probably not coincidental. Long has written a new book, “The Untold Story: A Story of Adversity, Pain and Resilience.” He said he fell into the celebrity trap and was surrounded by people , who may have had other motives. The case, he said, took a toll of his family and the stress nearly broke up his marriage. He told members of his church one Sunday that times were so dark that he once considered suicide. “When you’re going through something, the shouts of your haters seem to be louder and more multiplied than the people who are with you,” Long said. Resigning from his church was never an option, although attendance has fallen. He also said that he still believed marriage was between a man and a woman, something he has always stated. Today, he is moving forward. “Bitterness and anger,” he said. “Will kill you.”

'I still hate the glow of the setting sun': Hiroshima survivors' tales Though their numbers are dwindling and the advancing years are taking a toll, their haunting memories are undimmed by the passage of more than seven decades. On the occasion of Barack Obama's offering of a floral tribute on Friday at the cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park -- the first ever visit by a sitting US president -- some of them share their stories with AFP. Emiko Okada, now 79, was about 2.8 kilometres (1.7 miles) from ground zero and suffered severe injuries in the blast. Her sister was killed. "All of a sudden a flash of light brightened the sky and I was slammed to the ground. I didn't know what on earth had happened. There were fires everywhere. We rushed away as the blaze roared toward us. "The people I saw looked nothing like human beings. Their skin and flesh hung loose. Some children's eyeballs were popping out of their sockets. "I still hate to see the glow of the setting sun. It reminds me of that day and brings pain to my heart. "In the aftermath, many children who had evacuated during the war came back here, orphaned by the bomb. Many gangsters came to Hiroshima from around the country and gave them food and guns. "President Obama is a person who can influence the world. I hope that this year will be the beginning of knowing what actually happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki under the mushroom clouds. " Keiko Ogura, now 78, has devoted her life to keeping alive the memory of the devastating day. "Shortly after (the bomb exploded) it rained. It was a sticky black rain and made my clothes wet. "I saw a line of seriously burnt people, like silent ghosts. "Suddenly, a girl grabbed my leg and said in a weak voice: 'Give me water.' Others also said: 'Water. Water.' "I brought water to them, but some died right after they drank it. I regretted giving it to them. "I saw smoke from a nearby park where bodies were being cremated. Sometimes I could smell the bodies burning. "We faced the horror (of nuclear weapons). I tell everybody that it was hell. But they don't understand. "There is no peace in Hiroshima. There is horror here. " Park Nam-Joo, now 83, is an ethnic Korean, who has suffered from breast and skin cancer because of the radiation she was exposed to that day. An estimated 20,000 Koreans were among the dead in Hiroshima. Many had been taken to Japan as forced labourers during its 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean peninsula: "Everything was broken to pieces. Everywhere was rubble. It's beyond description. It was inhumane. "Hiroshima was a sea of fire. People bled from everywhere on their bodies: 'I'm burning. I'm burning. Please help,' they cried. "The wounds of the living were infested with maggots. There was no medicine for it. "People say human life is to be revered but the lives of those who died in the atomic bombing were just like those of insects. "I still shed tears when I recall the scene. Many people don't want to remember that. "I want people to know that not only Japanese but Korean, Chinese and others also suffered in the atomic bombing. "I'm Catholic. Wearing a rosary and with a statue of the Virgin Mary next to me, I pray at night for a peaceful passage to heaven. " This is part of a multimedia series AFP is running to mark US President Barack Obama's historic visit to Hiroshima. A second set of survivors' stories will move on Friday.

In a statement issued following the rocket attack, the group said: "We announce our responsibility for targeting Nahal Oz military base with a Katyusha rocket that was developed by our brave jihadists today at 23:00 p.m. " The group, which has clashed with Hamas in Gaza, said that it hoped its rocket attacks on the South would prompt Israel to retaliate against its rival Hamas. "Today, we are renewing our rocket attacks against Jewish settlements near the Gaza Strip in order to avoid a war against Hamas, whose security forces have recently started arresting salafi jihadists," the statement read. "We believe that this problem will be solved by steering the compass against the Jews, thereby preventing the negative repercussions of Hamas's oppressive moves against salafi groups," the organization added. The statement was concluded with a message to "the Jews": "This was only one of our attacks. Be careful because we will continue. " In response to rocket fire launched towards Israel late Wednesday night, the Israeli Air Force attacked two locations that were part of Hamas' terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. The IDF spokesperson released a statement in which they promised to continue to work in order to maintain quiet in the Gaza border communities in Israel. 2016-05-26 14:56 MAAYAN GROISMAN www.jpost.com
