Dr. Arun Motghare Mahavidyalaya, Kondha-kosra, Bhandara (M.S) India Email: [email protected] Abstract: Second Asian competition was played at the capital of Philippines Manila Between 1st may to 10th may 1954. Competition was organized in Rizal memorial stadium and 18 nations participated in it. In this competition not only the participating countries and players increased but the number of games also increased. Wrestling, shooting, and boxing games were added. Cycling was discarded from these games. In Manila games Japan was not only the champion in Athletics but they were ahead in Swimming, wrestling, and shooting. Philippines were once again the champions in Basketball. They were ahead in boxing and shooting also. Taiwan pulled the championship in football and Singapore in water polo and South Koreans were champions in weight lifting. The information collected was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Total 12 teams participated in the competition. A previous runner up Iran team was not playing. India started their campaign by defeating Japan by 3: 2 goals. WHEREAS, since the historic silver medal in boxing in the Olympic games in 1996, the Philippines has not won any Olympic medal. In fact, the Philippines has yet to win a gold medal in the Olympic games since joining in 1924; WHEREAS, in the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), the Philippines made history by winning its first-ever overall champiqnship title in 2005. However, the Philippines dropped to sixth-place finish in 2007; fifth-place in 2009; and, sixth-place in 2011. The next SEA Games is set in December this'year;1 WHEREAS, in 2012, Thailand allocated THB3.062 billion (P3.9 Billion) for the Sport Authority of Thailand, compared to the P178 million budgeted to the Philippines Sports Commission (excluding remittances from PAGCOR and other sources); WHEREAS, Thailand has 68 stadium with the National Stadium in Bangkok having a seating capacity of 65,000; Vietnam has 37 stadiums (including the 40,000-seater My Diohn Stadium in Hanoi; and Singapore has 21 stadiums (including the 55,000.00- seater National Stadium and the 30,000-seater Marina Bay Floating Stadium); WHEREAS, the Pnilippines' Rizal Memorial Stadium built in 1934 can accommodate only a maximum of 20,000. -

This entitles the Philippines, along with Iran and Japan to compete in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) from July 05 to 10,2016 for a slot in the 2016 Men's Olympic Basketball Tournament to be held from 06-21 August 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; WHEREAS, the track records of the Philippines in different FIBA's basketball competitions show that the Philippines men's national team finished fifth-place in the 1936 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal in the 1954 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The men's team also won five gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal in the FIBA Asia Championships; and bronze medal in the 2014 FIBA Asia Cup.
