It’s worth watching. The five candidates presented them- selves well. They are all very bright, well spoken, and understand the law. Things came apart a bit when Judge Tarvald Smith said that we must do something about “mass incarcera- tion.” Your reporter challenged that statement, saying that he had been around for many decades and had never heard of such a thing around here, that the Constitution was still in effect and the courts were functioning. The judge backtracked a bit, and all the candidates had their say, illustrat- ing to some degree the “racial divide” that we sometimes see on matters of justice. The election is Oct. 12. Oaks at Central School Complex What Central Means to Me Shortly after Suzi and I got married, I was a young deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office. My first assignment after the Parish Prison was to the Central substation on Gurney Road. It was the late 1970’s and Central was still very much in the country. I got to know every cor- ner of the Central community, and I fell in love with the people. — good conservative, family-oriented people who love God above, this great country, and their community. So many of my buddies in law enforcement lived in Central and the people treated all of us in the Sheriff’s office with respect and affection. It was easy to feel at home in Central and develop a loyalty to the people. When I was elected Police Chief in Baker, I continued to work closely with the Sheriff’s office and the Central sub- station. Those relationships never ended. Then in 2008, I was elected Sheriff with strong support from the people of Central. About that time, our children moved to Central, and our grandchildren soon enrolled in the new Central Commu- nity School System. Time flew by and before we knew it, our grandkids were practically grown and were students at Central High School. We found ourselves regulars at Wildcat Stadium — as grand- parents rooting for the Wildcats! We felt as much at home in Central as we had in Baker! In May, our granddaughter Camille graduated from Central High School, and we were filled with pride at all her accomplishments and very happy that her diploma was from Central High and really meant something! As Sheriff, I have been proud to work with the new Central Police Department. The Sheriff’s office continues to be the primary law enforcement agency for Central, but the Central Police Department is really making a difference and helping us fulfill our responsibilities. The media has criticized me lately for working with the Central Police De- partment, continuing to work closely with ICE on illegal im- migrants, and promising to work with the City of St. George, if the people there choose to incorporate. That criticism seems very strange to me. As Sheriff, it’s my responsibil- ity to do all of those things. Maybe I’m not politically cor- rect, but as the chief law enforcement officer of East Baton Rouge Parish, I have the responsibility to serve all the peo- ple of our parish, and that’s what I will always do! To all the people of Central, thank you so much for the support and kindness you give not only to Suzi and me but to our deputies as they put their lives on the line for all of us everyday! Central truly is “A Community that Cares!” and you let us know that everyday!

Service with a smile has always been the expectation for the staff but taken a step further: Doug wants the customer to leave with a smile as well. Much has changed over the years at the Clerk of Court’s Office. Bound volumes, which were once the only source of housed information, still line the shelves, but data available through technology has be- come the standard. The office’s advancements — from the recently upgraded court management system to the electronic filing and recording system soon to come — have been significant. The sharing of criminal records data among law enforcement agencies with all involved will be at the highest standard. The coming upgrade of the land management system will make already fast and thor- ough service even more efficient, with expanded online research capabilities. Some of the many services available through the Clerk of Court’s Office include • Marriage license issuance and passport application • Birth and death certificates available at the City Hall location • Domestic violence assistance in obtaining restraining orders • Recording of official documents into the Notarial Acts of the parish • Genealogical research through the extensive historical holdings

• Training for attorneys, realtors, researchers and other agencies Click Here for Video Tour of • Recruitment and training of election commissioners to staff voting precincts Clerk’s Office • Filing of new court suits and housing according to preservation standards • Providing copies of needed documents to customers of the office’s holdings As technology continues to make the office’s operations the best that they can be, it all goes back to that original concept for Doug.
