New distilleries and breweries are booming. "We're growing, growing, growing," said Tom Adams, president of Seven Troughs Distilling Co., which makes whiskey in Reno. He's not the only one. Churchill Vineyards south of Fallon released its own brandy in November and is working on gin, vodka, bourbon, other whiskeys and maybe absinthe as part of its new Frey Ranch Estates Distillery. It hopes to sell its first bottle of distilled spirits in June. MORE MONEY STORIES Mark William Erwin has launched a crowdfunding campaign to start Cold Springs Distillery. Common Core is giant And Ryan Quinlan of Silver State Stainless, which manufactures tanks for distilleries waste of time, money and breweries across the country at its Mound House facility, reports a "big increase April 5, 2014, 9:15 p.m. in demand in this local area." Much of the activity can be traced to the craft distillation bill, AB153, passed in the Nevada Legislature with no opposition last year. Northern Nevada cops say no ATF means no "Before AB153, we had no state laws to allow for the sale of distilled spirits," said money for gun buys, undercover operations Ashley Frey of Churchill Vineyards and Frey Ranch Estates. -

During this time of soaring unemployment, financial insecurity, and growing hunger, we urge Congress to temporarily increase SNAP benefit levels in the next federal COVID-19 relief package. America’s cities are on the front line of responding to unprecedented disruption to local economies triggered by COVID-19. As mayors, we need every option available to fight hunger and stimulate the economy in our cities. SNAP is a proven solution to both challenges. By providing families with a grocery benefit they can use to purchase food directly, SNAP is a safe, effective way to ensure that low-income children and their families can get the food they need during this unprecedented crisis. While the FFCRA provided USDA with authority to increase emergency SNAP allotments for existing SNAP households to the maximum benefit, the most vulnerable families—roughly 12 million people, including 5 million children—received no additional nutrition assistance because their household already received the maximum SNAP benefit. -

KEITH SHIPMAN Biography Keith Shipman was named President & CEO of the Washington State Association of Broadcasters on January 1, 2016. The WSAB is a trade association that focuses on promoting and protecting free, over- the-air broadcasters’ interests in Congress and Olympia, and represents 247 local radio and television broadcasters across the state. In addition to overseeing the day to day operations of the WSAB, Shipman managed the Oregon Association of Broadcasters in 2016 and 2017. He continues in his role as President & Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Broadcasting Group, a position he has held since 2003. He co-founded the company in 1999, and helped create a stable of 12 radio stations and a minor league baseball team in Oregon and Idaho. Three of Horizon Broadcasting Group's stations (KQAK-FM, KWPK-FM and KLTW-FM) have been honored as Oregon Radio Station of the Year, recognized by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters for their extraordinary community involvement. In 2008 he formed Summit Broadcasting Group, LLC to acquire and construct KBNW- AM, the first new AM station to sign on in Bend, OR since 1959. Upon appointment as CEO of Horizon Broadcasting Group he quickly moved to restructure the company, divesting its assets in Boise and Twin Falls, ID and Ontario, OR. As co-President and Secretary of Horizon Broadcasting Group he was responsible for overseeing operations, programming, FCC compliance and engineering initiatives for the company. His focus on operations and sales has created a successful platform of radio stations in Central Oregon. Under his leadership, HBG consolidated 4 FM and 2 AM stations in Bend-Redmond-Prineville to create a powerful cluster in Central Oregon. -

Describe your overall goals and approach to address identified community issues, needs, and interests through your station’s vital local services, such as multiplatform long and short-form content, digital and in-person engagement, education services, community information, partnership support, and other activities, and audiences you reached or new audiences you engaged. Each day Jefferson Public Radio (JPR) explores the issues, needs and interests of its listeners through its news, music and cultural programming. JPR’s local news department actively identifies issues of public importance and creates programs and multi-platform content designed to address these issues. JPR’s fact-based approach to addressing community issues embraces the highest journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness and balance with the goal of stimulating constructive civic discourse about topics of public importance. During the past year key local services and engagement activities included: • Conducted in-depth interviews with over 1,000 different sources and engaged over 2,500 different JPR listeners in an interactive discussion about regional civic issues on its daily public affairs program, The Jefferson Exchange. • Produced and broadcast in-depth, contextual news features that explored issues of community importance and interest. These features aired during local cutaways of NPR’s Morning Edition and contained over 300 different independent sources. • Produced and broadcast nearly 800 regional newscasts, reporting on the state legislatures of both Oregon and California as well as other local government bodies. • Produced, broadcast and disseminated via digital/social media platforms over 50 interviews and live musical performances featuring regional and touring musicians. -
