To many on the left, the Republican Party and Fox News seemed intent on disman- tling much of the federal government, cutting help to the poor, and increas- ing the power and money of an already powerful and rich top 1 percent. To many on the right, that government itself was a power-amassing elite, creating bogus causes to increase its control and handing out easy money in return for loyal Democratic votes. Since that time both parties have split their seams and Donald Trump has burst onto the scene, quickening the pulse of American political life. I had some understanding of the liberal left camp, I thought, but what was happening on the right? Most people who ask this question come at it from a political perspective. And while I have my views too, as a sociologist I had a keen interest in how life feels to people on the right—that is, in the emotion that underlies poli- tics.

My sister, Genyce, has told me again and again that I am writing the story that was given to me to tell, and that “what you know first stays with you” (MacLachlan, 1995, p. 20). These words have been a compass for me each time I have lost my way. And while this dissertation is about community, it is also a story that tells a good deal of who I am and who I am growing into. For this reason, it is easy for me to see that my life and my writing reflect the stamp of many whose lives are interwoven with mine. Thus, it is a great honor to recognize some of those who have cared for me, supported me, and encouraged me in my life and through the course of this writing project. I am grateful for those who first introduced me to community: my mother, Carolyn Griffin, Ed.D., and my father, Gene Griffin, J.D., who passed away prior to the completion of my dissertation.

MASTER THESIS Titel der Master Thesis / Title of the Master’s Thesis „Opportunities and Limits for a Non-Sovereign Nation on the International Stage: The Case of the Faroe Islands“ verfasst von / submitted by Rósa Heinesen angestrebter akademischer Grad / in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Advanced International Studies (M.A.I.S.) Wien 2018 / Vienna 2018 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt A 992 940 Postgraduate programme code as it appears on the student record sheet: Universitätslehrgang lt. Studienblatt Internationale Studien / International Studies Postgraduate programme as it appears on the student record sheet: Betreut von / Supervisor: Professor Arthur R. Rachwald 1 Abstract: Through an historical and International Relations point of view, the thesis investigates the options available for the non-sovereign Faroe Islands to expand their political presence and participation in the international arena, without secession from the Kingdom of Denmark. With reference to paradiplomacy theory, the study is guided by the multi response questionnaire technique, providing an outline of historical tendencies combined with current dispositions of Faroese and Danish authorities. The study finds that Danish arguments against the possibility of further Faroese autonomy in foreign affairs are inconsistent from an historical perspective, and that current external factors, such as the growing global focus on the Arctic, are prompting Danish politicians to consider options previously deemed impossible. Together, these findings represent a momentum, which the Faroe Islands may take advantage of to demand change. Key words: Faroe Islands, Paradiplomacy, Kingdom of Denmark, International Relations, Foreign Policy Zusammenfassung: Unter Berücksichtigung historischer und internationaler Beziehungen untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit die vorhandenen Möglichkeiten der nicht-souveränen Färöer Inseln ihre politische Bedeutung auf der internationalen Ebene auszubauen, ohne dadurch die Abspaltung vom Dänischen Königreichs voranzutreiben.

THE IMPRISONED BODY: WOMEN, HEALTH AND IMPRISONMENT CATRIN SMITH THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SEPTEMBER 1996) DbEFNYDDIO TN er LLYFRGELL, Th U.= TO tE CqNSULTED 11BRARY UNIVERSITY OF WALES, BANGOR SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL PO I was never allowed to forget that being a prisoner, even my body was not my own (Maybrick, 1905 :112). The idea that law has the power to right wrongs is persuasive. Just as medicine is seen as curative rather than iatrogenic, so law is seen as extending rights rather than creating wrongs (Smart, 1989: 12) Abstract Problems affecting the female prison population have become increasingly acute. In response to a spirit of 'toughness' in penal policy, the number of women prisoners has grown sharply and more women are being sent to prison despite arguments in favour of decarceration and alternative sanctions. In prison, women make greater demands on prison health services and are generally considered to carry a greater load of physical and mental ill-health than their male counterparts. However, a gender-sensitive theory based on an understanding of the relationship between women's health and women's imprisonment has not been formulated. Health is a complex phenomenon of inseparable physical, mental and social processes. Research conducted in three women's prisons in England set out to explore the relationships between these processes. Data were generated from group discussions, in-depth interviews, a questionnaire survey and observation and participation in 'the field'. The findings suggest that women's imprisonment is disadvantageous to 'good' health. Deprivations, isolation, discreditation and the deleterious effects of excessive regulation and control all cause women to suffer as they experience imprisonment.

January 13, 2021 Acting Attorney General Jeffery A. Rosen U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC 20530-0001 Dear Acting Attorney General Rosen, We write to echo and emphasize our colleagues’ condemnation of the violent breach of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Such an abhorrent act is an affront to our nation, and we commend the United States Department of Justice for taking expedient steps toward prosecution. Attorneys General are called to lead by and to the rule of law in pursuit of justice and equality. We should all – collectively – decry political violence in every instance. The culture war is no longer a cold one, and it’s heating rapidly. The last several years have seen an assassination attempt that left Representative Steve Scalise fighting for his life, bombs mailed to public figures and detonated in city centers, buildings or entire blocks taken or held by force, and mass demonstrations that led to destruction, injury, and death. Our people and police officers are targeted and killed, our courthouses and churches burned, and the seat of our nation’s government was breached by an angry mob. Like all Americans, we seek clarity and direction toward a bright future. Like all of you, we believe the rule of law clearly leads to harmony. But until we Attorneys General stand together against all political violence, we amplify aimless partisan wandering instead of taking strides toward unity. When Antifa or like-minded rioters stoked violence on college campuses, we did not have the strength to unify. Now they stoke violence in our streets as we wonder where all this chaos started.
