A Case Study Documenting Coastal Monitoring and Modelling Techniques in Sicily, Italy œ An Island Example prepared in the framework of the MESSINA project Emma Mathie Isle of Wight Council December 2005 Project part-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) within the INTERREG IIIC Programme 1. INTRODUCTION Sicily is the biggest island in the Mediterranean and has a very varied coastline, which covers almost a thousand kilometres (Randazzo and Scrofani 1996). The east coast, bordering the Ionian Sea, extends for about 160 kilometres between Cape Peloro and Cape Passero: 55% of this coast is made up of beaches (Amore et al 1996). The east coast can be divided into two areas separated by the southwestern Etna lava fluxes. These have reached the sea and formed the piers of Catania‘s port. The beaches of the north coast, crossed by steep streams ( fiumare ), are characterised by sand, grit and pebbles mainly of metamorphic origin. The south coast is mainly rocky and its inlets are often characterised by small beaches with medium and thin carbonaceous sands (Amore et al 1990 and 1992). Almost 900,000 inhabitants live within the radius of influence of coastal erosion is Sicily, which makes Sicily the fourth most exposed Italian region in terms of population at risk, after Veneto (1,200,000 inhabitants), Tuscany (950,000) and Campania (915,000). However, Sicily comes just after the Veneto region in terms of urbanised area at risk (250 km2 within the radius of influence of coastal erosion) which is mainly explained by the presence of densely populated coastal settlements along the coasts such as the cities of Palermo, Messina, Catania, Syracuse, or Taormina.

PROVINCIA DI RAGUSA COMUNE DI S.CROCE CAMERINA PIANO DI PROTEZIONE CIVILE RELAZIONE GENERALE Aggiornamento: luiglio 2016 ELABORAZIONE GRAFICA A CURA DI OGGETTO: PIANO DI EMERGENZA COMUNALE DI PROTEZIONE CIVILE In relazione al Protocollo d’Intesa sottoscritto tra il Comune di Santa Croce Camerina e il Servizio Regionale di Protezione Civile per la Provincia di Ragusa, per l’Organizzazione e svolgimento delle Attività di Protezione Civile nel Comune di Santa Croce Camerina , il III Dipartimento Assetto del Territorio ha redatto il Piano di Emergenza Comunale di Protezione Civile, con il coordinamento e supporto tecnico-operativo del Servizio Regionale per la provincia di Ragusa, che ha fornito la piattaforma informatica su cui inputare le tabelle con i dati comunali, unitamente a personale qualificato che ha materialmente redatto le cartografie allegate su base GIS, garantendo altresì la formazione ai responsabili delle funzioni supporto del C.O.C. (Centro Operativo Comunale) ed il necessario coordinamento alla stesura generale. Il presente Piano è stato redatto nel rispetto della normativa di cui alla Legge Regionale 14/98, della direttiva “Metodo Augustus” del Dipartimento Nazionale della Protezione Civile e delle Linee guida per la redazione dei piani comunali di protezione civile emanate dalla Regione Siciliana, utilizzando la struttura di base prevista dall’O.P.C.M. 3606/07.
