EXCERPTS FROM HOMER Excerpts from Iliad Six (Hector is the oldest son of Troy’s King Priam, and the chief defender of the city. He leaves battle temporarily to return to the city.) Focus questions: 1. What are the main roles of women in this section – i.e., what are the actions of the Trojan women, Theano, Hecuba (the queen, Hector’s mother) and Andromache? 2. How do women’s roles support the survival of the city – or do they? 3. In what ways do women contribute to or detract from a man’s honor? 4. Hector and Andromache’s relationship is perfect in Greek terms – how do they relate to one another? What is the balance of “power”? What roles does each play in the family? Now when Hector reached the Scaean gates and the oak tree, the wives and daughters of the Trojans came running towards him to ask after their sons, brothers, kinsmen, and husbands: he told them to set about praying to the gods, and many were made sorrowful as they heard him. Introduction and General Backgrounds hantastes is one of the most mysterious books George MacDonald wrote andP one of the least understood books in the English tradition. Since its publication in 1858, reviewers, readers and researchers have experienced great difficulties understanding the meaning of this complex work.The perceived impediments have been so great that some scholars remain unsure whether Phantastes contains a coherent plot or structure (Reis 87, 89, 93-94; Robb 85, 97; etc.). Other critics appear adamant that it contains neither (Wolff 50; Manlove, Modern 55, 71, 77, 79; England 65, 93, 122). Even those scholars who sense a structure or perceive a plot differ not only regarding the types of structure(s) and/or plot(s) they acknowledge (Docherty 17-22; McGillis “Community” 51-63; Gunther “First Two” 32-42), but in deciding into what, if any, genres or traditions Phantastes belongs (Prickett, “Bildungsroman” 109-23; Docherty 19, 23, 30, McGillis, “Femininity” 31-45; etc.). -

Lucan’s Natural Questions: Landscape and Geography in the Bellum Civile Laura Zientek A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Catherine Connors, Chair Alain Gowing Stephen Hinds Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Classics © Copyright 2014 Laura Zientek University of Washington Abstract Lucan’s Natural Questions: Landscape and Geography in the Bellum Civile Laura Zientek Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Catherine Connors Department of Classics This dissertation is an analysis of the role of landscape and the natural world in Lucan’s Bellum Civile. I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013). -

DE NOVIS LIBRIS IUDICIA A. H. M. KESSELS, Studies on the dream in Greek Literature, Utrecht, Hes Publishers, 1978. XI, 268 pp. Under the title Studies on the dream in Greek literature Dr. A. H. M. Kessels offers, first, an Introduction on previous theories and literature about dreams in Homer and on the special character of the Homeric poems and its consequences for the study of dreams, secondly in three chapters ("The dream in Homer", "The pattern of the Homeric dream-scene", "Conclusions"), a detailed analysis of dreams and dream-references in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and finally, two more general "studies", entitled "Greek terminology for `dream' and 'dreaming ...... The dream in simile and metaphor" . -It would have helped the reader if the title of the book reflected more adequately the author's scope and material.- In this review I confine myself to focusing the attention of the reader on some Homeric utterances on dreams, on the interpreta- tion of which we have not reached agreement, despite ample and pleasant discussions after finding out that we were working in the same field. Whether the dveipox6Xoq in Il. I, 62-68 is to be con- sidered as a skilled interpreter of other people's dreams, or as the dreamer by the inspiration of a god, intentionally lying down for a mantic sleep, seems to be left vague, unless we find in the fact that no dreams of others are mentioned here an indication for a "Traumseher" rather than for a "Traumdeuter", as Mr. Kessels s does (p. 25 ff). To me both the term oneiropolos and the situation which he is supposed to clarify allow for no more than a mantis who is specialized in, who deals with dreams, when asked for a ritual ad- vice, no matter whether those dreams are dreamt by himself, or by others (either involved in the situation or taken from mantic collec- tions of terata and dreams). -

DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM OCTOBER 1977 ABSTRACT The aim of this dissertation is two-fold: firstly to examine the career and character of Philip II of Macedon as portrayed in Books VII - IX of Justin's epitome of the Historiae Phillppicae .of Pompeius Trqgus, and to consider to what extent Justin-Trogus (a composite name for the author of the views in the text of Justin) furnishes accurate historical fact, and to what extent he paints a one-sided interpretation of the events, and secondly to identify as far as possible Justin's principles of selection and compression as evidenced in Books VII - IX. -

300 Jim Marks Jim Marks Context as Hypertext: Divine Rescue Scenes in the Iliad A number of factors determine the fates of individual characters during battlefield scenes in the Iliad. In terms of sheer body count, most of those that perish in battle seem to have been created simply in order for others to kill them.1 Typical of this group is the Trojan Cleoboulus, who receives neither dying words nor patronymic nor homeland, and appears only long enough to fall to Oileian Ajax (16.330–334). As for the more developed characters, life or death in battle is, to begin with, a function of the plot: major heroes by definition survive through most or all of the narrative, and lesser ones at least until they have performed their subsidiary roles. Hec- tor, for instance, must remain alive until the dramatic climax of the plot in Book 22, while the Trojan ally Pandarus is killed soon after he performs the necessary function of restarting the war following the duel between Menelaus and Paris in Book 3 (4.85–222, 5.243–296). The fates of at least some of these more developed characters are also influenced by the fact that they were already or were becoming established in other contexts at the time when the Iliad was taking shape. Odysseus, to take an obvious example, cannot die in the Iliad because he was a widely recognized figure best known for a successful return from Troy, as is at- tested in the Homeric Odyssey and non-Homeric poetry, artistic represen- tations, cult activity on his native Ithaca, and so on.
