Strategies of 'Aesopian Language' in Romanian Literary Criticism Under
SLOVO , VOL. 24, NO . 2 (A UTUMN 2012), 75-95. The Rhetoric of Subversion: Strategies of ‘Aesopian Language’ in Romanian Literary Criticism under Late Communism ANDREI TERIAN Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania This paper analyses the subversive strategies of ‘Aesopian language’ with reference to the discourse of the Romanian literary criticism written under late communism (1971-1989). The first two sections of the paper signal certain gaps and inconstancies in defining Aesopian language and in delineating its forms of manifestation; at the same time, they explain the spread of this subversive practice in the political and cultural context of Romanian communism. The following three sections analyse the manner in which Aesopian language materialized in the writings of some of the most important contemporary Romanian critics: Mircea Iorgulescu, Nicolae Manolescu and Mircea Martin. The final section of the study considers a revision of the current definitions of Aesopian language (through the concept of “triggers” theorized in this paper), a new classification of the rhetorical strategies acting globally in a subversive text, as well as a re-evaluation of the relevance of Aesopian language in the context of ‘resistance through culture’, which was the main form of opposition against the communist regime in Romania. INTRODUCTION In the Foreword to his famous pamphlet Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), V.I. Lenin cautioned his readers that the paper had been written ‘with an eye to the tsarist censorship’; therefore, he had found it essential to render his subversive doctrine ‘with extreme caution, by hints, in an allegorical language – in that accursed Aesopian language – to which tsarism compelled all revolutionaries to have recourse whenever they took up the pen to write a “legal” work’. -

Rearticulating Socialist Subjectivities
Rearticulating Socialist Subjectivities Class and Gender in Romanian Fiction during Communism by Alexandru Demirel Emil Boican Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy School of Slavonic and East European Studies University College London 2016 I, Alexandru Demirel Emil Boican confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis proposes a socio-cultural analysis of the articulation of socialist subjectivities in Romanian fiction during the communist period. The question underpinning my research, therefore, concerns the way in which the literary articulation of subjectivity changed across two historical divides: from the inter-war period to Socialist Realism and from Socialist Realism to the literature of the troubling decade. This thesis will be argued over four chapters, two of which will examine the works of Mihail Sadoveanu while a further two will dissect the works of Augustin Buzura. Through the close reading of the works of Sadoveanu and Buzura, whose careers span the two aforementioned historical divides, this thesis will trace the complex rearticulating of class and gender subjectivities as they evolved throughout the communist period, as well as the importance of the communist regime’s social legacies as regards the understanding of post 1989 social developments in Romania. Central to the communist regime’s project of social transformation was the creation of an egalitarian society by default of the abolition of capitalist classes and gender inequalities. While the regime claimed that the material basis of these inequalities had been eliminated and social emancipation was well advanced, critics considered that the official egalitarian discourse had erased social and individual differences and engendered the so-called “faceless masses”. -
Prose, Poetry & Essay
Prose, Poetry & Essay New Romanian Titles Translation Alistair Ian Blyth Freeze‑frame COSMIN CIOTLOȘ This catalogue contains a sample of Romanian literature from the last two years. More than a collection of books or, even less so, authors, it is an assemblage of sensibilities. Selecting from a large number of published works, I asked myself whether it would pro‑ vide a representative image. In other words, whether it would pro‑ vide an interested (non‑Romanian) audience a conclusive outline of an organic and highly active intellectual medium. I therefore tried to forget that I myself was part of that same system and that in writ‑ ing literary criticism I myself possessed a clear picture of the topog‑ raphy of Romanian literature today, with all my natural likes and dislikes. I ignored predetermined strategic calculations and only at the very end, when the whole map was ready, did I subject it to anal‑ ysis. I was thereby able to conclude that an equitable distribution had been made. There are authors here whose names internation‑ ally well known, having been translated by major publishers and won high‑profile awards, and there are authors who are more unfa‑ miliar, at the beginning of their careers, but who hold out the prom‑ ise of solid bodies of work. Likewise, the selection includes authors of widely varying biological and literary ages. Some of them, who emerged in the 1960s, are true living classics, who lay down stylistic laws and act as masters to their younger apprentices. The majority, of course, sprouted in the nursery of the so‑called “eighties generation,” which represented a turning point in Romanian literary awareness. -

We attempt to find an answer to the following two questions: How do first year students enrolled at Universitatea Babeş-Bolyai perceive the city in relation with Transylvania? And How is Cluj-Napoca’s tourist potential appreciated by other Romanian’s? The results of our paper rely on the finding of two different survey-based researches that we have undertaken in 2009. -
