SOCIOLINGUISTIC PROFILE OTJIHERERO IN NAMIBIA AND IN OMATJETE ROSE MARIE BECK Sociolinguistic profiles vary in scope, depth, differentiation etc. For the following pro- file I have chosen 11 aspects, of which it will not be possible to answer all of them with information pertaining to the Omatjete area (see map on p. 3). Much of what I write here is based on Rajmund Ohly‘s excellent sociolinguistic history of Herero (—The destabilization of the Herero language, 1987). Where it was possible I have in- cluded information specific to Omatjete. Aspects of a sociolinguistic profile 1. Classification, dialectal variation and differentiation, regional distribution, num- ber of speakers 2. Linguistic features: phonolgoy, morphology, syntax, lexicon (often with special reference to loanwords) 3. Who speaks it? 4. With which proficiency (L1, L2, L3 …) Grammatical, functional, cultural, ora- ture/literature? 5. Literacy 6. Domains (i.e. ”socio-culturally recognized spheres of activity‘ in which a lan- guage is used, a —social nexus which brings people together primarily for a cluster of purposes - … and primarily for a certain set of role-relations“ (Fishman 1965:72; 75). He later completed a Diploma in Personnel Management graduating with Distinction with the Institute of People Management (IPMZ). Moyo later entered the Theological College of Zimbabwe (TCZ) in Bulawayo where he majored in reading Theology and Philosophy, dropping out of the College after one-and-a-half- years. Between the time of his finishing of the GCE Ordinary Level in 1999 and publishing this book in 2012, Moyo worked for the Zimbabwe postal service, Zimbabwe Posts, and the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (Noczim) in his home town of Plumtree. -

The hypotheses that syllabic nasals arise preferably from sequences of m + rounded high vowel, rather than m + unrounded high vowel, are tested against the data. The approach is an example of intragenetic comparison discussed by Greenberg (1969). The results confirm the hypotheses. Some details on the stages of development of syllabic nasals are discussed, and a formal representation of the intermediate states and processes is sketched. Copyright © 2013 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved II Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This study is a historical investigation of the role of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) regarding social development with special attention to education as an agency of social change. ELCIN is the largest Lutheran church in Namibia, which was born out of the Finnish missionary activities after their arrival in the former Ovamboland in 1870. The Finnish missionaries became the first missionaries to do mission work in Ovamboland. This qualifies them to be regarded as pioneers of social development and of the transformation of society through education among the Ovambo people. ELCIN’s humble beginnings started as a mission field and developed into mission congregations; thereafter as a mission church and finally as independent church in 1954. The study shows that since its inception ELCIN has been committed to serve her members holistically (spiritually and socially). -
Bilingual Dictionary and Meaning Discrimination in Venda*
http://lexikos.journals.ac.za Meaning Discrimination in Bilingual Venda Dictionaries* Munzhedzi James Mafela, University of South Africa, Pretoria, Republic of South Africa ([email protected]) Abstract: Venda, one of the minority languages in South Africa, has few dictionaries. All are translational bilingual dictionaries meant for dictionary users who are non-native speakers of the language. Dictionary users find it difficult to use the bilingual Venda dictionaries because they are confronted with equivalents which they cannot distinguish. In most cases, the equivalents of the entry-words are provided without giving meaning discrimination. Without a good command of Venda and the provision of meaning discrimination, users will find it difficult to make a correct choice of the equivalent for which they are looking. Bilingual Venda dictionaries are therefore not helpful for dictionary users who are non-native speakers of the language. Devices such as giving illustrative examples, indicating parts of speech and adding etymology could be used to solve the problem of meaning discrimination in bilingual Venda dictionaries. This article highlights the problem of the absence of meaning discrimination and suggests solutions to future Venda lexico- graphers in this regard.
