Towards Chinese Calligraphy Qian Zhuzhong and Fang Desheng I. History of Chinese Calligraphy: A Brief Overview Chinese calligraphy, like script itself, began with hieroglyphs and, over time, has developed various styles and schools, constituting an important part of the national cultural heritage. Chinese scripts are generally divided into five categories: Seal script, Clerical (or Official) script, Regular script, Running script, and Cursive script. What follows is a brief introduction of the evolution of Chinese calligraphy. A. From Prehistory to Xia Dynasty (ca. 16 century B.C.) The art of calligraphy began with the creation of Chinese characters. Without modern technology in ancient times, “Sound couldn’t travel to another place and couldn’t remain, so writings came into being to act as the track of meaning and sound.”1 However, instead of characters, the first calligraphy works were picture-like symbols. These symbols first appeared on ceramic vessels and only showed ambiguous con- cepts without clear meanings. -

Alex Angehrn, 9402 Mörschwil, www.sansui-angehrn.ch 20 Exkurs 7: Huan Wen und Yin Hao (S017) Nachdem das Triumvirat Yu Liang, Wang Dao und Chi Jian gestorben war, weitete sich der blutige Kampf zwischen der Wang- und Yu-Familie aus, aber nach Wang Yunzhi's Tod fehlte dem Wang-Clan von Langye die Führungspersönlichkeit, die schwierige politische Lage durch- zustehen. Nachdem Wang Xizhi das Gouverneursamt von Jiangxi und Fujian abgegeben hatte, fiel diese Region in die Hände von Yu Bing 庾冰 (296-344) und zusammen mit Yu Yi dominierte der Yu-Clan mit seinem Einfluss die Nation. Yu Yi bestimmte 345 auf dem Totenbett Yu Yuanzhi 庾爰之 (ca. 325-360) als Nachfolger. Ministerpräsident He Chong zog jedoch Huan Wen für das Amt vor, um den immer mächtiger werdenden Yu-Clan, einzudämmen. Huan Wen hegte von jung auf grandiose Pläne und war genial in der Zivilregierung. 346 forderte er von der Regierung die Einwilligung zum Angriff gegen Sichuan und befahl ohne Einwilligung der Regierung eigenmächtig die Entsendung von Truppen. Im Jahr 347 vernichtete Huan Wen in kurzer Zeit das Land Cheng-Han und verleibte die gesamte Provinz Sichuan der östlichen Jin ein. Die Regierung machte Huan Wen zum General der Westprovinzen und seine Macht erstreckte sich nun weit über den Staat. Der schwache Kaiser Mudi 穆帝 (343-361) traute sich nicht, Huan Wen entgegenzutreten. Aber Ministerpräsident Sima Yu ernannte absichtlich dessen Rivalen Yin Hao zum Gouverneur von Yangzhou. Yin Hao hatte unter Yu Liang zusammen mit Wang Xizhi als Stabsoffizier gedient, führte später ein zurückgezogenes Leben und lehnte lange Anfragen für den Beamtendienst ab. -

However, Tao’s extant oeuvre includes a large number of poems on history. This article aims to complement current scholarship by exploring his viewpoints on life through a close reading of his poems on history. His poems on history are a key to Tao’s perspectives with regard to the factors that decide a successful political career, the best way to cope with difficulties and frustrations, and the situations in which literati should withdraw from public life. Examining his positions reveals the connec- tions between these different aspects. These poems express Tao’s perspectives on life, as informed by his historical predecessors and philosophical beliefs, and as developed through his own life experience and efforts at poetic composition. Keywords Tao Yuanming – poems on history – perspectives on life Tao Yuanming 陶淵明 [ca. 365–427], a native of Xunyang 潯陽 (contem- porary Jiujiang 九江, Jiangxi), is one of the best-known and most-studied Chinese poets from before the Tang [618–907]. The Revival of Tiantai Buddhism in the Late Ming: On the Thought of Youxi Chuandeng 幽溪傳燈 (1554-1628) Yungfen Ma Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Yungfen Ma All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Revival of Tiantai Buddhism in the Late Ming: On the Thought of Youxi Chuandeng 幽溪傳燈 (1554-1628) Yungfen Ma This dissertation is a study of Youxi Chuandeng’s (1554-1628) transformation of “Buddha-nature includes good and evil,” also known as “inherent evil,” a unique idea representing Tiantai’s nature-inclusion philosophy in Chinese Buddhism. Focused on his major treatise On Nature Including Good and Evil, this research demonstrates how Chuandeng, in his efforts to regenerate Tiantai, incorporated the important intellectual themes of the late Ming, especially those found in the Śūraṃgama Sūtra. In his treatise, Chuandeng systematically presented his ideas on doctrinal classification, the principle of nature-inclusion, and the practice of the Dharma-gate of inherent evil. Redefining Tiantai doctrinal classification, he legitimized the idea of inherent evil to be the highest Buddhist teaching and proved the superiority of Buddhism over Confucianism. Drawing upon the notions of pure mind and the seven elements found in the Śūraṃgama Sūtra, he reinterpreted nature-inclusion and the Dharma-gate of inherent evil emphasizing inherent evil as pure rather than defiled. Conversely, he reinterpreted the Śūraṃgama Sūtra by nature-inclusion. Chuandeng incorporated Confucianism and the Śūraṃgama Sūtra as a response to the dominating thought of his day, this being the particular manner in which previous Tiantai thinkers upheld, defended and spread Tiantai. -

In one of the versions, a young man discovered three lacquer coffins when digging a tomb for his deceased father and had the coffins reburied elsewhere. That night, he dreamed of Lu Su 魯肅 (172–217), the powerful minister in the southern Kingdom of Wu, who angrily announced that he would exact revenge. He also dreamed of his late father, who told him that Lu Su was fighting with him over the gravesite. Later, the young man found copious blood on his father’s seating mat.1 In the early fourth century, after the fall of the Jin capital Luoyang to the non-Han nomadic peoples, the royal house of the Jin dynasty and the great families of the north crossed the Yangzi River and established the Eastern Jin (317–420), with Jiankang 建 康 (modern Nanjing) as the new capital. In the story cited above, the deceased father, Wang Boyang 王伯陽, was likely a member of the aristocratic Wang clan from Langye (in modern Shandong), since his wife was none other than the niece of the famous min- ister Xi Jian 郗鑒 (269–339) of Gaoping (also in modern Shandong), as these northern aristocratic families maintained a strict code of intermarriage.2 The Langye Wang clan had settled not far from Jiankang, formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Wu. -
