FROM SHAKESPEAREAN HEROINE TO PRE-RAPHAELITE MUSE DANA PERCEC West University of Timișoara [email protected] Abstract: The paper aims to make a connection between the female models of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the portrayal of Shakespearean heroines, given that the 19th-century school of painting was using the Bard not only as a source of legitimation and authority, but also as a source of displacement, tackling apparently universal and literary subjects that were in fact disturbing for the Victorian sensibilities, such as love and eroticism, neurosis and madness, or suicide. As more recent scholarship has revealed, the women behind the Brotherhood, while posing as passive and contemplative, objects on display for the public gaze, had more agency and mobility than the average Victorian women. Keywords: Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, female models, Victorian sensibilities, Shakespearean heroines, sisterhood. 1. Introduction The Pre-Raphaelite movement has received a lot of critical attention both in artistic terms and in terms of the literary sources of inspiration this school of painting used. The founders, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt were members of the same generation of young imaginative artists, but even half a century after the first PRB exhibition in 1848, a late Pre-Raphaelite like John William Waterhouse had the same technical and aesthetic approach. Escapist and nostalgic, the Pre-Raphaelite painting favours medieval settings, Biblical or mythological themes, lavish costumes and vivid colours. Above all, it brings to the forefront the female subject: beautiful young women in a melancholy pose, enigmatic and inactive, statuesque and aloof.

Challenging several long-standing be- liefs about the PRB, which is often characterized as a disparate group who pursued divergent, even antithetical, goals, Marcia Werner proposes that the Pre-Raphaelites developed and shared an artistic philosophy comprehensive enough to embrace all of their differences. Werner reconstructs this credo through careful study of writings by Pre-Raphaelite artists and their associates. She also examines unexplored and neglected contemporary intellectual and philosophical sources, particularly those of John Stuart Mill and Thomas Carlyle, whose works are shown to be critical to an understanding of Pre-Raphaelite painting. Supporting her ideas through sustained analyses of key works, the author also argues that John Ruskin’s importance to the Pre-Raphaelites has been misunderstood and overstated. Rowe A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2005 Committee: Sue Carter, Advisor Catherine Cassara Graduate Faculty Representative Thomas Wymer Richard Gebhardt Bruce Edwards ii ABSTRACT Sue Carter, Advisor This study was undertaken to determine the rhetorical function of the verbal texts inscribed on the frames of the paintings of the Victorian Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt. The nineteenth century expansion of the venues of rhetoric from spoken to written forms coupled with the growing interest in belle lettres created the possibility for the inscriptions to have a greater function than merely captioning the work. Visits were made to museums in the United States and Great Britain to ascertain which of Hunt’s paintings have inscribed frames. In addition, primary sources at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and the British Library, London, were consulted to determine if the artist had recorded his design plans or stated any specific purpose for the inscriptions. Contemporary reviews and exhibition catalogs were also consulted at these libraries. In addition, secondary sources were examined for relevant discussions of Hunt’s works. It was concluded that the inscribed works fit the parameters of explanatory rhetoric, a form informational and didactic rather than persuasive in nature. The common nineteenth century venue for explanatory rhetoric was the pulpit, instructing converted parishioners about Church doctrines and their Christian duties. It was also concluded that this shift in rhetorical purpose was not new to the Victorian era, rather that there is a long history of explanatory rhetoric going back at least to Augustine.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: EARLY INNOVATIONS IN SHAKESPEAREAN PERFORMANCE: LUDWIG TIECK, WILLIAM POEL, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS TO THE NAZARENES AND PRE-RAPHAELITES Natalie Marie Tenner, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Directed By: Professor Franklin J. Hildy Department of Theatre and Performance Studies This dissertation attempts to reanalyze the Elizabethan stage work of Ludwig Tieck and William Poel through a historically cultural lens, instead of within the frame of Shakespearean performance. Connecting these men personally and idealogically to two artistic groups, the Nazarenes and the Pre-Raphaelites, reveals, through their respective productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Measure for Measure, their positions as Romantic artists in changing societies. The German Romantics used their art to progress towards a unified German nation. Tieck, who knew Novalis, the Schlegel brothers, and Schleiermacher, exhibited more political awareness than he is usually give credit for. His production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on an attempted recreation of an Elizabethan stage can be read as a theatrical event in which Tieck displayed, both by product and by procedure, his ideal nation in which all classes are connected intellectually and culturally, but at the same time understand the specific role they must fill in society. Poel’s production of Measure for Measure on an Elizabethan stage, when viewed in relation to Pre-Raphaelite thought, reveals a tension in Poel’s work between his pristine Victorian aesthetic and his appreciation for the flawed human being. This manifested itself in Poel’s producing a play with sexually explicit and morally difficult themes, which he then heavily cut to soften some of the discomfort.

In 2015 the National Gallery of Victoria staged a two-day symposium to coincide with their exhibition Medieval Moderns: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In my keynote lecture, “The People behind the Portraits in Australia’s Pre-Raphaelite Collections,” I examined the links between the image in the work of art and the actual individual portrayed, while also develop- ing the theme of the crossover between portraiture and subject painting in Pre-Raphaelite art.1 From the founding of the Brotherhood in 1848, this group of young British artists ignited new possibilities in all genres of art, not least portraiture. The formal portrait mutated into a more direct vision of a real person, while subject paintings gained new meanings as artists cast family and friends in new roles, bringing into question the wider issue of identity. I argue in this paper that Walter Howell Deverell’s The Pet Parrot (1853), a painting in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, exemplifies this aspect of Pre-Raphaelite art.2 1 I am most grateful to Alison Inglis whose invitation to speak at the Symposium provided the opportunity for the research contained in this article.     Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2014 Realism to Surrealism: European Art and Culture 1848-1936 Truth and beauty: the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Assoc. Prof. Alison Inglis, University of Melbourne 29 / 30 January 2014 Lecture summary: This lecture will investigate the work of the group of English artists known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. It will explore the context in which the Brotherhood was formed in 1848 and identify the features of their art that were regarded as controversial. The careers for the three key artists associated with the Brotherhood, namely, John Millais, William Holman-Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, will be examined as well as the work of some of their followers, in particular, Edward Burne-Jones. Special attention will be given, whenever possible, to works by the Pre-Raphaelites in Australian collections. Finally, the transformation of the Pre-Raphaelites from a semi-secret ‘Brotherhood’ into a more general movement within later nineteenth-century Britain, namely ‘Pre- Raphaelitism’ will be considered. The extent to which the artistic movement can be regarded as ‘avant-garde’ (in style, in subject matter, in the lifestyle of its practitioners) will also be addressed throughout the presentation. Robert Isaacson directed the Hewitt Gallery in the 1950s, then his own gallery, before moving on to Durlacher Bros. until around 1970. As author and dealer, he was an early champion of the works of Simeon Solomon. For thirty years, up until his death in 1998, Robert Isaacson and James Draper collected together. Their person - al, investigative tastes were exceptional and are reflected in these selected works.
