It is to her that I dedicate this thesis. i Abstract Shakespeare’s plays have inspired their readers ever since they were written. The study of Shakespeare became particularly popular during the Victorian era. Representations of the plays came to be much present in paintings, poems, and theatrical performances. From a different angle, women’s rights, unlike the prosperity of the era, were limited. They were framed under many patriarchal stereotypes. In this connection, Shakespeare’s women interested the critics, poets and painters. The topic of the women in Shakespearean plays is one of the most inspiring subjects for the Victorian artists, especially for the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. As the Pre-Raphaelites focused on their intention of painting subjects with jewel-like colors and detailed rendering of nature, Shakespeare’s plays became ideal subjects for artists to paint out the complexity of the scenery and symbolically illustrate their philosophies and ideologies. This paper focuses on an analysis of how the women in Shakespeare’s plays are reimagined and rediscovered through the eyes of Victorian artists. Out of the many heroines in his works, Ophelia, Mariana and, Miranda are characters that present symbolic meanings and influences to the Victorian eyes. These three heroines represent the women’s status during the Victorian era as follows: Ophelia is connected with female malady (madness), Miranda with her image as the dutiful daughter, and Mariana with her isolation. Paintings and poems inspired by these women during the Victorian era will be discussed and used as prompts to strengthen the points. In each case, I will add interpretations building on current critical consensus in order to show how visions have changed from Victorian times to ours in relation to Shakespeare’s female characters selected in this thesis for discussion. 前拉菲爾派(Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood)尤其受到莎士比亞的女角吸引並繪 畫出許多以她們為主題才的再現作品。由於前拉斐爾派專注於繪畫主題的強烈情 感、珠寶般的色彩和近乎真實的自然風景,莎劇中的女角成為前拉菲爾派描繪景 物複雜性的主題,並從中表達出他們的哲學、意識形態、視覺意涵。 本文著重在分析及探討維多莉亞時期的藝文人士如何重新構思和重現莎劇中的 女性。從眾多莎劇女角中,本文將著重分析奧菲莉亞(Ophelia)、米蘭達(Miranda) 及瑪莉安娜(Mariana)在維多利亞人眼中的象徵性和影響。在維多莉亞時期, 這三位女角所代表的意識如下:奧菲莉亞與女性的瘋狂(female malady)、米蘭 達與她那完美女兒的形象和瑪莉安娜所代表的孤獨。受到莎劇中女角啟發的繪畫 及再現作品將會作為主要的研究案例及探討範圍。除此之外,本文中也會根據討 Abstract Little art-historical scholarship has been dedicated to fine art responding to the British home front during the First World War. Within pre-war British society concepts of sexual difference functioned to promote masculine authority. Nevertheless in Britain during wartime enlarged female employment alongside the presence of injured servicemen suggested feminine authority and masculine weakness, thereby temporarily destabilizing pre-war values. Adopting a socio-historical perspective, this thesis argues that artworks engaging with the home front have been largely excluded from art history because of partiality shown towards masculine authority within the matrices of British society. Furthermore, this situation has been supported by the writing of art history, which has, arguably, followed similar premise.

FROM SHAKESPEAREAN HEROINE TO PRE-RAPHAELITE MUSE DANA PERCEC West University of Timișoara [email protected] Abstract: The paper aims to make a connection between the female models of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the portrayal of Shakespearean heroines, given that the 19th-century school of painting was using the Bard not only as a source of legitimation and authority, but also as a source of displacement, tackling apparently universal and literary subjects that were in fact disturbing for the Victorian sensibilities, such as love and eroticism, neurosis and madness, or suicide. As more recent scholarship has revealed, the women behind the Brotherhood, while posing as passive and contemplative, objects on display for the public gaze, had more agency and mobility than the average Victorian women. Introduction The Pre-Raphaelite movement has received a lot of critical attention both in artistic terms and in terms of the literary sources of inspiration this school of painting used. The founders, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt were members of the same generation of young imaginative artists, but even half a century after the first PRB exhibition in 1848, a late Pre-Raphaelite like John William Waterhouse had the same technical and aesthetic approach. Escapist and nostalgic, the Pre-Raphaelite painting favours medieval settings, Biblical or mythological themes, lavish costumes and vivid colours. Above all, it brings to the forefront the female subject: beautiful young women in a melancholy pose, enigmatic and inactive, statuesque and aloof.

Challenging several long-standing be- liefs about the PRB, which is often characterized as a disparate group who pursued divergent, even antithetical, goals, Marcia Werner proposes that the Pre-Raphaelites developed and shared an artistic philosophy comprehensive enough to embrace all of their differences. Werner reconstructs this credo through careful study of writings by Pre-Raphaelite artists and their associates. She also examines unexplored and neglected contemporary intellectual and philosophical sources, particularly those of John Stuart Mill and Thomas Carlyle, whose works are shown to be critical to an understanding of Pre-Raphaelite painting. Supporting her ideas through sustained analyses of key works, the author also argues that John Ruskin’s importance to the Pre-Raphaelites has been misunderstood and overstated.     Pre-Raphaelites and the Book February 17 – August 4, 2013 National Gallery of Art Pre-Raphaelites and the Book Many artists of the Pre-Raphaelite circle were deeply engaged with integrating word and image throughout their lives. John Everett Millais and Edward Burne-Jones were sought-after illustrators, while Dante Gabriel Rossetti devoted himself to poetry and the visual arts in equal measure. Intensely attuned to the visual and the liter- ary, William Morris became a highly regarded poet and, in the last decade of his life, founded the Kelmscott Press to print books “with the hope of producing some which would have a definite claim to beauty.” He designed all aspects of the books — from typefaces and ornamental elements to layouts, where he often incorporated wood- engraved illustrations contributed by Burne-Jones.
