PLAN FOR NOTIFYING EMPLOYEES NOT TO REPORT TO WORK The Hanford Administrative Committee, in accordance with Article XIII, Section 4., has determined that the following plan will be implemented by the EMPLOYER for the purpose of notifying employees covered by the Hanford Site Stabilization Agreement not to report to work. The EMPLOYER will cause an announcement to be made over local radio stations broadcasting within the Tri-Cities and Yakima areas at least two hours prior to the employees’ regular starting time advising that construction operations are closed and that the EMPLOYERS’ employees should not report to work. A general announcement will be considered to apply to all employees of the EMPLOYER, and to all activities of the EMPLOYER, except for those employees and/or activities which are specifically identified as not be affected by the announcement. Further, employees will recognize and adhere to a similar announcement issued by the OWNER, the U.S. Department of Energy, and will assume that such general announcements addressing the Hanford site and/or Hanford employees will include employees of the EMPLOYERS. The announcement will apply only to the shift immediately following the time of the announcement unless the announcement gives instructions to the contrary. But another group of cold-tolerant plants without fl owers can help brighten the fall garden when almost ev- erything else is looking tired and ready for winter. Ornamental cabbage and kale are the same species as edible cabbages, broccoli, and caulifl ower (Bras- sica oleracea) but have much fancier and more col- orful foliage than their cousins from the vegetable garden. While these plants are sometimes offered as “fl owering” cabbage and kale, they are grown for their large rosettes of colorful leaves, not the fl owers. These plants are very showy and come in a variety of colors, ranging from white to pinks, purples or reds. Even though they are technically all kales (kale does not produce a head; instead, it produces leaves in a tight rosette), by convention those types with deeply- cut, curly, frilly or ruffl ed leaves are called ornamen- Ornamental kale makes a dramatic massed planting. tal kale, while the ones with broad, fl at leaves often edged in a contrasting color are called ornamental cabbage. The plants grow about a foot wide and 15” tall. 2 BREEDING, GENETICS AND MODELS The classic triangle of U (1935) (Fig. 1.2) shows the inter-relationships of brassicas based on their chromosome numbers and 2n genome descriptors. These species can be inter-crossed using embryo rescue, fusion and other methods. In addition, massive opportunities are emerging from studies of model brassicas such as thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) and Wisconsin Fast PlantsTM that identify genes and their products which can be applied in crop species. Further, some breeders are now working with the less well known species in Brassicaceae, such a Brassica carinata, to extract valuable genes for resistance to pathogens, pests and other economic characters. The Brassicaceae is one of the most flexible plant families in terms of interspecifc and intergenomic crosses. Rapid progress is being made in our understanding of their component genes, genomic interactions, protein products and resultant phenotypic characteristics, leading eventually to even wider and more diverse crosses. Concurrently, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and linkage maps are being made for most of the major species, and these have shown many common chromosome linkage groups occurring across these species. This is encouraging the research into the potential of single gene transfer into economic crops from the model types. GENOMIC CHARACTERS AND TAXONOMY The following six Brassica species, plus Raphanus sativus, radish 2n = 18, have been inter-crossed, with varying levels of difficulty requiring embryo culture or fusion to obtain hybrids: Brassica nigra Koch, black mustard, 2n = 16; Brassica carinata Braun, Ethiopian mustard, 2n = 34; Brassica juncea L. Coss, brown mustard, 2n = 36; Brassica napus, swede or rutabaga, rape or oilseed rape (canola) 2n = 38; Brassica rapa, turnip and Chinese cabbage, 2n = 20; and Brassica oleracea, cole crops, 2n = 18. -

Crop Profile for Leafy Greens in North Carolina Prepared: July, 2003 General Production Information ● North Carolina growers produced 243,000 cwt. of collards in 2001. North Carolina ranked third among the states in the production of collards in 2001, representing 14.5 percent of the U. S. production. A total of 2,800 acres of collards were planted and 2,700 acres of collards harvested in North Carolina in 2001. Growers in the state produced 90 cwt. of collards per acre in 2001, valued at $6,318,000. ● Growers in North Carolina produced 147,000 cwt. of turnip greens in 2001. North Carolina ranked third among the states in the production of turnip greens in 2001, representing 13.1 percent of the U. S. production. A total of 2,200 acres of turnip greens were planted and 2,100 acres of turnip greens harvested in North Carolina in 2001. Growers in the state produced 70 cwt. of turnip greens per acre in 2001, valued at $3,822,000. ● The production of mustard greens in North Carolina totaled 91,000 cwt. in 2001. North Carolina ranked fifth among the states in the production of mustard greens in 2001, representing 8.8 percent of the U. S. production. A total of 1,400 acres of mustard greens were planted and 1,300 acres of mustard greens harvested in North Carolina in 2001. Growers in the state produced 70 cwt. of turnip greens per acre in 2001, valued at $2,457,000. Production Regions Collards, kale, turnip greens and mustard greens are produced in all three of the regions of North Carolina, the Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Mountains. -
