Thus, samba school members have well defined performance roles that are hierarchically structured. In this dissertation, I argue that gendered identities are constructed and articulated in the process of cultivating specific performance roles within samba schools. I am particularly interested in highlighting the ways in which specific femininities and masculinities came to be taught, learned and naturalized in the lives of samba school members, as they engage in strategies of social- and self-discipline while preparing for the carnaval parade each year. Central to my argument is the idea that dance/musical competence is intertwined with notions about the physical body and the nurturing of particular character dispositions. By analyzing specific historical moments, discourses and samba schools’ micro-practices and disciplinary methods, I show how performance roles are determined and defined by perceptions regarding gender as well as age, body type, skin color, behavior and bodily deportment. Furthermore, I demonstrate how the act of dancing and/or playing music in distinctive ways has become, at once, critical markers of specific femininities and masculinities, and also the way through which one learns how to be feminine or masculine.     BaianaSystem is one of the major urban music groups produced in Bahia (BRA). Influenced by Jamaican sound systems, the group not only amplifies sound but also the essence of local traditions. A system that manifests itself on stage or on the streets spreading out Brazilian music without borders. The sound produces a constant dialogue between the Bahian guitar and the singing, led by bass lines which complement its frequency spectrum. On top of that, there is great percussive base force (electronic or organic) as well as Afro-Latin rhythms such as Frevo, Samba-Reggae, Pagode, Groove Arrastado, Ijexá, Kuduro and Reggae. The group lineup is Roberto Barreto on Bahian Guitar, Russo Passapusso on vocals and SekoBass on bass additionally supported by several musicians, producers and artists. Currently, those who participate most frequently in this sound are as follows; DJs and producers João Meirelles and Mahal Pitta; percussionist JapaSystem and guitarist Junix. Over and above music there is the visual conception – an inseparable strength in BaianaSystem’s communication and upbringing. From that background the mask leaps out – a symbolic element – as an icon turning into the embodiment of a “being”, a bond with the audience making everybody feel as a vital part of this system. This work is directed by the designer Filipe Cartaxo in workstream with Maquina de Louco, coordinated by artist Filipe Bezerra who plays a part as the creative core of BaianaSystem’s project planning and production. Since its first studio album release – BaianaSystem (2010) along with the EP Pirata (2013) which delivers the hit “Terapia”, BaianaSystem has already performed worldwide at the New Orleans Jazz Festival; at the Global Fest in NY; at Fujirock (Japan), as well as gigs in Russia, China and France.

    The traditional samba school dance as a performative experience Renata de Sá Gonçalves Universidade Federal Fluminense Rio de Janeiro – RJ – Brasil [email protected] The anthropologist Evans-Pritchard criticizes that in ethnological approaches dance is often viewed as an independent activity and is described without reference to its contextual setting in native life (PRITCHARD, 1928). In his analysis of the Zande beer dance, the author emphasizes that dance always requires a stereotyped form, a prescribed mode of performance, concerted activities, recognized leadership and elaborate organization and regulation. Howard Becker talking about music, literature, theatre, dance and all the possible arts lightened not the artist genius but the collective activities and social conventions that composes an art world and operates a social system (BECKER, 1982). The main objective of this communication is to demonstrate that the Rio samba school carnival, as a collective activity, configures itself as a “popular art world” with specific rules, procedures and evaluation criteria composing his owns aesthetic conventions that are communally made and experienced. In this world, the samba school directory, the school members, the competition jury committee, the critics, the media, the researchers and finally, the audience act together. I will restrict the present analysis to a dance performed by a special couple in the Rio samba school parades - the couple of major-domo or “mestre- sala” 1 and flag-bearer or “porta-bandeira” 2 - as a representative example of an idea of tradition. Who are the couple? The ambiguous character of this couple is defined by its specific dance that is slower than the samba rhythm, by their typical acts, gentle gestures, positions, looks, smiles, improvisation and by their antique customs.

    Elza Soares presta homenagem a Lupicínio Rodrigues No centenário de um dos maiores compositores do Brasil e cronista das dores de amores, Elza Soares prestará uma homenagem emocionada, repleta de belas interpretações. Apaixonada pela obra e pelo grande amigo Lupi – desde o início da década de 1960, quando gravou “Se acaso você chegasse” – Elza levará ao palco um show inteiramente dedicado à obra de Lupicínio Rodrigues. “Paixão, não saudade”. Essa é a definição de Elza Soares para o show em homenagem ao centenário de nascimento de Lupicínio Rodrigues, dias 16 e 17 de dezembro, às 21h, no Theatro São Pedro. A apresentação traz músicas paradoxalmente atemporais de um dos maiores cronistas brasileiros das dores de amores, na voz singular de uma eterna vanguardista e fonte de inspiração para diferentes gerações de músicos. Com direção do maestro Eduardo Neves, Elza interpreta clássicos como Cadeira vazia, Se acaso você chegasse, Ela disse-me assim e Nervos de aço, entre outras. “Lupi está na minha pele. Tenho duas rosas tatuadas em homenagem a ele, a quem devo muito”, conta Elza que conheceu Lupicínio Rodrigues no início da década de 1960, na boate Texas, no Rio de Janeiro. “Estava no palco e vi de longe um homem vestido de branco, com um buquê de rosas vermelhas na mão. Ele me olhava insistentemente e eu já fui pensando que não daria certo! No final do show, ele se aproximou e disse que trazia rosas para uma Rosa. Eu rispidamente respondi que detestava rosas – a mais pura mentira, sou louca por rosas – e que meu nome não era Rosa.

    “O Que é que a Bahiana tem”--Carmen Miranda (1939) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Katherine Bishop-Sanchez (guest post)* Carmen Miranda Early label In 1938, the Brazilian actress and popular singer Carmen Miranda (1909-1955) starred in her fifth Brazilian produced film, “Banana da Terra” (Sonofilms) and performed, among several musical numbers, the samba “O que é que a baiana tem?” composed by Dorival Caymmi. This samba would become Miranda’s signature song, indelibly connecting the Brazilian singer to the figure of the baiana or Afro-Brazilian woman from Bahia. In Brazil, Miranda recorded the song with Dorival Caymmi at Odeon Records in 1938, and then again with her band, Bando da Lua, at Decca USA, in December 1939. The title of this song can be translated as “What does the girl from Bahia have?” making reference to the Afro-Brazilian women from Bahia who can be seen in urban centers throughout Brazil selling their savory dishes on street corners. Their typical dress includes a wide, often white, hooped skirt, a loose-fitting cotton blouse trimmed with wide lace, a striped shawl draped over the shoulder or around the waist, a turban, sandals, and numerous necklaces and bracelets. The typical baiana dress is a staple of Carnival festivities, candomblé religious ceremonies and other religious festivities throughout Brazil such as the popular festivals of Bonfim in Salvador, Bahia. A large ensemble of women dressed as baianas has been one of the most important wings of official samba school Carnival parades since the early 1930s. Carmen Miranda’s performance of “O que é que a baiana tem?” in “Banana da Terra” became memorable because of the synergy between her costume and the lyrics of the song.

Busca-se verificar se as narrativas presentes no filme evidenciam possibilidades de diálogo com a cantora e reflexões sobre as violências cometidas contra as mulheres por meio de uma teorização na carne que não dependa apenas do conhecimento acadêmico. Emprega-se não apenas o documentário como referência, mas suas biografias escritas, além de outras produções bibliográficas que nos ajudem a tematizar as questões envolvidas, para uma análise metodológica feminista decolonial Apresentamos, entre nossos resultados, a relevância das narrativas para o enfrentamento das violências contra mulheres.
