  • Baianasystem Press Info 2018
BaianaSystem is one of the major urban music groups produced in Bahia (BRA). Influenced by Jamaican sound systems, the group not only amplifies sound but also the essence of local traditions. A system that manifests itself on stage or on the streets spreading out Brazilian music without borders. The sound produces a constant dialogue between the Bahian guitar and the singing, led by bass lines which complement its frequency spectrum. On top of that, there is great percussive base force (electronic or organic) as well as Afro-Latin rhythms such as Frevo, Samba-Reggae, Pagode, Groove Arrastado, Ijexá, Kuduro and Reggae. The group lineup is Roberto Barreto on Bahian Guitar, Russo Passapusso on vocals and SekoBass on bass additionally supported by several musicians, producers and artists. Currently, those who participate most frequently in this sound are as follows; DJs and producers João Meirelles and Mahal Pitta; percussionist JapaSystem and guitarist Junix. Over and above music there is the visual conception – an inseparable strength in BaianaSystem’s communication and upbringing. From that background the mask leaps out – a symbolic element – as an icon turning into the embodiment of a “being”, a bond with the audience making everybody feel as a vital part of this system. This work is directed by the designer Filipe Cartaxo in workstream with Maquina de Louco, coordinated by artist Filipe Bezerra who plays a part as the creative core of BaianaSystem’s project planning and production. Since its first studio album release – BaianaSystem (2010) along with the EP Pirata (2013) which delivers the hit “Terapia”, BaianaSystem has already performed worldwide at the New Orleans Jazz Festival; at the Global Fest in NY; at Fujirock (Japan), as well as gigs in Russia, China and France.

  • “Llamadas” Da Dança No Candombe Uruguaio1

  • Three Millennia of Tonewood Knowledge in Chinese Guqin Tradition: Science, Culture, Value, and Relevance for Western Lutherie
Savart Journal Article 1 Three millennia of tonewood knowledge in Chinese guqin tradition: science, culture, value, and relevance for Western lutherie WENJIE CAI1,2 AND HWAN-CHING TAI3 Abstract—The qin, also called guqin, is the most highly valued musical instrument in the culture of Chinese literati. Chinese people have been making guqin for over three thousand years, accumulating much lutherie knowledge under this uninterrupted tradition. In addition to being rare antiques and symbolic cultural objects, it is also widely believed that the sound of Chinese guqin improves gradually with age, maturing over hundreds of years. As such, the status and value of antique guqin in Chinese culture are comparable to those of antique Italian violins in Western culture. For guqin, the supposed acoustic improvement is generally attributed to the effects of wood aging. Ancient Chinese scholars have long discussed how and why aging improves the tone. When aged tonewood was not available, they resorted to various artificial means to accelerate wood aging, including chemical treatments. The cumulative experience of Chinese guqin makers represent a valuable source of tonewood knowledge, because they give us important clues on how to investigate long-term wood changes using modern research tools. In this review, we translated and annotated tonewood knowledge in ancient Chinese books, comparing them with conventional tonewood knowledge in Europe and recent scientific research. This retrospective analysis hopes to highlight the practical value of Chinese lutherie knowledge for 21st-century instrument makers. I. INTRODUCTION In Western musical tradition, the most valuable musical instruments belong to the violin family, especially antique instruments made in Cremona, Italy.

  • Korean Dance and Pansori in D.C.: Interactions with Others, the Body, and Collective Memory at a Korean Performing Arts Studio
ABSTRACT Title of Document: KOREAN DANCE AND PANSORI IN D.C.: INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS, THE BODY, AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY AT A KOREAN PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO Lauren Rebecca Ash-Morgan, M.A., 2009 Directed By: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. Finally, I explain how all these levels of interaction can foster in the participant an increasingly rich and complex identity.
