  • 373 CONCLUSION Throughout the 20Th Century, Vieät-Nam Was at The
    CONCLUSION Throughout the 20th century, Vieät-Nam was at the intersection for most of the international powers in politics and culture: France, China, the Soviet Union, and the United States. For more than a century, the changes in aesthetics in Vieät-Nam roughly followed the course of the nation’s relations with these foreign powers. Inevitably, they left their traces in Vietnamese culture, more or less, according to their approaches to Vieät-Nam. The conclusion locates these changes at four turning points in Vietnamese art history and reviews Socialist Realism in the post-doi moi context. Consideration is also given to the introduction of alternative art schools that might challenge current Vietnamese institutions and help nurture a new generation of creative visual artists. Such institutions might fill the gaps between current Vietnamese art theory and practice and their relationship to the global art world. These alternative art schools could also disseminate a more complete and objective account of Vieät-Nam’s art history, which as outlined in the introduction, is one of the governing principles of this thesis. The four turning points: The four turning points of change are: the introduction of western influences under colonialism, the adoption of Socialist Realism in North Vieät-Nam, the pursuit of individuality and expressive art in South Vieät-Nam and the transformation in visual arts under doi moi. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first influential turning point was already in progress with the imposition, in the late 19-century, of French colonial values, which were, and still are, most apparent in the architectural landscape and the adoption of western styled clothing.

When dealing with the same request their response was that as a municipality they have no authority to fly a national flag that is not recognized by the Government of Canada, and they will reconsider their position if the Government of Canada raises the flag on Parliament Hill.

    1 Vietnam Vo Hieu I. Introduction Vietnam – sometimes spelled Viet Nam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the East Sea (the South China Sea) to the East. Hanoi, the nation’s capital, lies on the banks of the Red River. It is not only the country’s political, cultural and educational capital but also the most important economic center in the North. Ho Chi Minh City, the new name for Saigon, lies just north of the Mekong Delta in the South, and is the largest city in Vietnam. The city, with a population of seven million, functions as the country’s economic heart and business hub. Danang, in the central part of the country, is the third largest city and an important port. The country was usually called Annam until 1945, when the Proclamation of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam was written by Ho Chi Minh president and announced in public, solemn declared to the world at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945 changed the official name back to Việt Nam. Since the use of Chinese characters was discontinued at this time, the alphabetic spelling of Vietnam is now official. I.1 Geography, Climate Viet Nam country is located in the South East Asia, stretching from 8° 27 to 23° 23 N and from 102° 08 to 109° 30 E, Viet Nam has a total land area of 329,314 km2, of which the area of plains is only 7 million ha and the remainder is mountains, hills and plateau.

    Communist Development and the Post-Communist Democratic Deficit Grigore Pop-Eleches Princeton University [email protected] Abstract: This article analyzes the post-communist regime track record in comparative perspective and reevaluates the impact of modernization on the democratic prospects in developing countries. The analysis shows that ex-communist countries were less democratic than their socio- economic development levels would have predicted, and that the development-democracy link was different than elsewhere, due to the distorted nature of communist development. The article then traces this democratic deficit to individual-level deficits in democratic attitudes and civic and political participation. Post-communist democratic prospects are further undermined by the fact that the participatory deficit is greater among the relatively pro- democratic middle class, than among the lower class, which had experienced mobilization from above under communism, but was less likely to subscribe to democratic values than lower classes in non-communist countries. After years of relative neglect,1 modernization theory has recently made an unexpected comeback as an explanation of cross-national regime patterns, as several statistically sophisticated approaches (e.g. Przeworski and Limongi 1997, Barro 1999, Boix and Stokes 2003, Epstein et al 2006) have assessed the impact of socio-economic development on the initiation and survival of democracy. Nationalism, Politics, and a Sino- Vietnamese Archaeological Debate of the 1970s and 1980s XIAORONG HAN EVER SINCE THE BIRTH OF MODERN ARCHAEOLOGY in the nineteenth cen­ tury, nationalism and politics have been important factors in its development, and as such, archaeologists in various parts of the world have been actively in­ volved in the construction of ethnic and/or national origins and identities, the corroboration of national myths, the disputes over territories and cultural inven­ tions, and so on (Diaz-Andreu and Champion 1996; Hudson 1999; Kohl and Fawcett 1995; Meskell 1998; Pai 2000; Silberman 1989; Trigger 1984). Although it is difficult to find a single country in which archaeology is completely free from the influence of nationalism and politics, it is understandable to find that archae­ ologists operating in authoritarian systems generally have a stronger tendency to develop a close relationship with the nation-state and involve themselves in poli­ tics because of a lack of academic freedom and independent sources of financial support. Nazi Germany, early twentieth-century Japan, and pre-World War II Soviet Union are extreme examples of the politicization of archaeology (Arnold and Hassman 1995; Hudson 1999: 35, 44; Shnirelman 1996; Trigger 1989: 178­ 179; Wiwjorra 1996). In post-war Asia, archaeologists in China and Viet Nam were actively engaged in the development of a new wave of nationalist archaeol­ ogy under the encouragement and sponsorship of the state (Glover 1999; Tong 1995). And even, what is an orchestra? Does the Morley Consort Lessons count as an orchestra? What about Gabrieli with a couple of brass choirs, or even four brass choirs, belting it out at each other across the nave of San Marco? Or the vast resources of the Striggio etc Royal Wedding and the Florentine Intermedii, which seem to have included the original four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, or at least a group of musicians popping out of the pastry. I’m not sure that any of these count as orchestras. The Morley Consort Lessons are a chamber group playing at home; Gabrieli’s lot wasn’t really an orchestra; The Royal Wed- dings and so forth were a lot of small groups, of the usual renais- sance sorts, playing in turn. Where I am inclined to start is with the first major opera, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Even that tends to be the usual renaissance groups taking turn about, but they are all there in a coherent dra- matic structure, and they certainly add up to an orchestra.
