The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.

  • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

  • 2021 Wilkes-Barre City Calendar Mayor George C. Brown
2021 Wilkes-Barre City Calendar Mayor George C. Brown A Message from Mayor George C. Brown For all of the wrong reasons, 2020 was a year that we will never forget. The pandemic raged in our community, routine rhythms of daily life were disrupted, and lives were lost and families irreparably scarred. Yet, I still found cause for hope. Even amidst the gloomiest days of 2020, I still saw progress achieved. Our city mourned but we did not despair. Our city stumbled but we did not fall. Our city struggled but we overcame. I am well aware of the challenges that Wilkes-Barre faces. No doubt difficult decisions loom; however, I am as confident as ever that there is nothing that we cannot achieve together. As a people, we have always stood for a few basic principles. Progress through sacrifice. Progress through resilience. Progress through compassion. We have always rejected the politics of expedience. We have always rejected the politics of self-interest. We have always rejected the politics of opportunism. Last year, we made difficult but necessary decisions to restore confidence in city government and solidify city finances. We also revived dormant commercial and residential development projects that are vital to the future of the city. We must continue to invest in ourselves if we expect Wilkes-Barre to thrive in the coming years. In this calendar you will find changes to accepted recyclable items and changes to collection schedules. The global recycling industry has changed significantly in the past few years. We must do our part to properly recycle, both for the health of the environment and for the financial savings that proper recycling provides.

  • Straight Outta Washington
Straight Outta Washington This page exists so the first few questions aren’t spoiled upon opening. Moderator Instructions: Each answerline consists of a mashup between a rapper and a politician (eg: Danny Brown + Sam Brownback = Danny Brownback). The correct answer must be a mashup name. Be generous and prompt the player if they can name both the rapper and politician but can’t think of the mashup name. I attempted to think of all possible mashup names for the answerline, but accept a mashup name that is not listed if you think it is reasonable. I included the actual rapper and politician in the answerline. 1. The cover of this person’s album Lost Change promises “Prosperity at home, prestige abroad”. This person opposed the replacement of his namesake tariff with the Wilson-Gorman tariff by protesting “We rockin' it, contagious/Monkey business, outrageous”, and he also complained “I think the whole world's addicted to the drama” after he was put on blast in the De Lome Letter. He won a rap battle on his front porch by rapping “beats so big, I'm stepping on leprechauns” at an opponent who spit the bar “you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold”. This president simply said “bring the action” to lead the United States into the Spanish-American War. “Scream and Shout” is by Britney Spears and, for ten points, what man, whose assassination allowed Teddy Roosevelt to join the Black Eyed Peas? Answer: will.i.am McKinley (the people are will.i.am and William McKinley) 2.
